heh i was waiting until we got to 50 single artists polls to do a "which winner is so clearly not the act's best song?" poll, so don't take that from me

Ella Maria Finally Rich-O'Connor (some dude), Saturday, 28 December 2013 21:55 (twelve years ago)

Meh, no Blur, no credibility

Pre-Madonna (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 28 December 2013 21:56 (twelve years ago)

Normally in any poll with the Who as an option, I would choose the Who. But, as much as I love "Substitute," it didn't make my top 10, and I was a little surprised to see it top the poll. So I'm gonna go with Marvin Gaye, because "Grapevine" has three drummers playing more sparsely than one, but one drummer couldn't have played it.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 28 December 2013 21:58 (twelve years ago)

What?! How does that work?

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 28 December 2013 22:00 (twelve years ago)

i will prob vote for "When The Levee Breaks." one of those polls where lots of songs could've been a suitable winner but when that one came out on top it just seemed right.

Ella Maria Finally Rich-O'Connor (some dude), Saturday, 28 December 2013 22:02 (twelve years ago)

Shake Your Rump for me, for pretty much that reason - never for a moment would've thought it to be their consensus no.1, then when when it was I was all *slaps forehead*

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 28 December 2013 22:04 (twelve years ago)

Powderfinger

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 28 December 2013 22:20 (twelve years ago)

Zep for me.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 28 December 2013 22:35 (twelve years ago)

I dunno, I like almost all of these. Gimme Shelter for today.

jmm, Saturday, 28 December 2013 22:37 (twelve years ago)

God Only Knows, Gimme Shelter, Waterloo Sunset, Shhh/Peaceful, White Man In Hammersmith Palais, The Crystal Ship

Those were the ones where I thought "that could have been my #1 -- I wonder if it was." It would be funny if any of the others actually were #1s on my ballots and I don't remember them. I think I'll vote Clash just barely ahead of the Stones.

millions now living will never kick out the jams (WilliamC), Saturday, 28 December 2013 22:54 (twelve years ago)

Ahh, so you didn't feel the need to include the TV Theme Poll.

MarkoP, Saturday, 28 December 2013 22:56 (twelve years ago)

I'd've included that and MC Tunes were I not limited to 50 options

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 28 December 2013 23:05 (twelve years ago)

"Someone Saved My Life Tonight" because, in the six polls I've participated in thus far, it is the only time when my #1 was also the consensus #1.

a fifth of misty beethoven (cryptosicko), Saturday, 28 December 2013 23:06 (twelve years ago)

my #1 is pretty frequently the actual #1, esp when it's a 'surprise' winner for some reason - depeche mode, neil young, elvis costello. several others where i don't think it was as much a surprise as well - new order, pj harvey, the who, i think it's cuz i send in at least 19 ballots. haha i was so happy w/ 'deeper and deeper' doing surprisingly well in the madonna poll (it was my #1) that in my memory it had somehow actually won the thing instead of coming in at #3. voting beach boys as it's the only spotify playlist here i still follow.

balls, Saturday, 28 December 2013 23:36 (twelve years ago)

Cant quite decide yet between Zep & Neil but after those two I rank em : Mac, Marvin, Doors, Beatles, Stones, ABBA, Prince, Madonna, Sam & Dave, Who.

Quarterpayne McRapp (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 29 December 2013 00:40 (twelve years ago)

Phil Spector

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Sunday, 29 December 2013 03:26 (twelve years ago)

I've voted in like 30 of these and the #1 has never been my #1 although plenty of times i've voted for the winner -- if there are a few songs that could be my #1, i usually go with the one least likely to win the poll or be anyone else's #1

Ella Maria Finally Rich-O'Connor (some dude), Sunday, 29 December 2013 03:36 (twelve years ago)

closest i came was "Superstition" at #2, and that's pretty unfuckwithable.

Ella Maria Finally Rich-O'Connor (some dude), Sunday, 29 December 2013 03:42 (twelve years ago)

Miles

brimstead, Sunday, 29 December 2013 03:45 (twelve years ago)

Looked back at my ballots and my #1 wound up as the winnah twice -- Stones and Jacksons. Usually I have a song in mind that means a lot to me but is pretty far from consensus-best ("That's All For Everyone," "Rene & Georgette Magritte").

oldbowie (WilliamC), Sunday, 29 December 2013 04:03 (twelve years ago)

Levee, Dreams, and Crystal Ship were all #1s on my ballots

Quarterpayne McRapp (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 29 December 2013 06:36 (twelve years ago)

what happened to pavement?

a beef supreme (dog latin), Sunday, 29 December 2013 11:53 (twelve years ago)

went for the clash because i don't agree with the majority of these.

a beef supreme (dog latin), Sunday, 29 December 2013 11:54 (twelve years ago)

I don't like Pavement

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 29 December 2013 12:02 (twelve years ago)

oh no

Quarterpayne McRapp (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 29 December 2013 15:54 (twelve years ago)

Only a terrible awful person would disregard the Pavement poll after I worked so hard on the images: http://bit.ly/1czxJHn

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 29 December 2013 16:02 (twelve years ago)

Aw that's lovely, but Trigger Cut was robbed

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 2 January 2014 00:01 (twelve years ago)

Beasties, Madonna and Miles were the ones where the poll #1 was also my #1. Of those, I'll vote Miles. (Lots of these I didn't vote in, but I don't think there are many others where the winner would have been my personal #1.)

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 2 January 2014 00:24 (twelve years ago)

all of these

Pet Shop Boys - What Have I Done To Deserve This?
Stevie Wonder - Superstition
Fleetwood Mac - Dreams
Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill
The Who - Substitute
Madonna - Into The Groove
PJ Harvey - Dress
New Order - Temptation
The Doors - The Crystal Ship
Motown Singles - I Heard It Through The Grapevine (Marvin Gaye)
Stax - Hold On, I'm Comin' (Sam & Dave)
Velvet Underground - What Goes On
Elvis Costello - Beyond Belief

some that were underwhellming as number ones: A Day In The Life, God Only Knows, Papa's Got A Brand New Bag, I Want You Back, Life On Mars?, White Man In Hammersmith Palais, You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real), Totally Wired

g simmel, Thursday, 2 January 2014 07:32 (twelve years ago)

There have only been four where my #1 was the poll #1 (GBV, Paul Simon, Kate Bush and Jay-Z) but I'm fine with at least half of these. I think the Costello one is the most surprising and the Beastie Boys was the most *pleasantly* surprising (Ismael otm upthread in other words).

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 2 January 2014 09:01 (twelve years ago)

"Get Ur Freak On is not even the best Missy song and that wasn't even a Missy poll" vs Temptation vs What Goes On vs "WTF how could that come out tops in the Madonna poll?"

And I actually think that the ur-What Goes On has been improved on and done better by other bands, so although the Velvets were seminal (LOL) I don't have that "the best thing in the entire world" feeling about it, even though it is my favourite Velvets song.

Temptation... I can't even decide what the best New Order song is, so I've no idea how that came out top (I'd have thought that Blue Monday was canonical, but Temptation is in point of fact a better *song* than Blue Monday by a tiny, tiny margin) but yeah, ILX polls of yore made me realise that I do actually consider New Order to be the best band in the world, in that I struggle to think of any band better than them that I would select over them in a poll.

I mean, yeah, there are loads of tracks on here that if they came on, I would get up and dance, but I don't have the complicated ~feels~ about the artist that I have about New Order. So Nothing that feels "personal favourite" on the level that a bunch of scruffs from Macclesfield do.

I would have voted Gimme Shelter because it's the poll I had the most fun participating in :D

The Fall's "Totally Wired" winning was the one that shocked me the most.

Until the final ballot came in, "The Classical" was the front-runner all the way along. That final ballot (prepared well before) was mine. And Totally Wired was my number one, and it took the tape by one point or something like it.

I was sorely tempted to revise or sack my vote. But, hey..
