Janet Jackson singles that didn't chart or break the Top 10 (in the US)

A (probably somewhat misguided) spin-off from Stevie D's awesome Michael Jackson singles that didn't chart or break the Top 10 (in the US) thread.

Skipping the pre-Control stuff and going by the main U.S. charts, not the dance ones, where I think Janet's never missed the top 10 maybe ever? Was kind of loose, also, w.r.t including songs that were radio-only for some reason (mainly the Velvet Rope stuff).

Ugh, so many to choose from. My heart told me to go with "Pleasure Principle" cause Control is still unfuckwithable.

Murgatroid, Monday, 30 December 2013 05:34 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, I fully expect that one to run the table.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Monday, 30 December 2013 05:42 (eleven years ago)

Justifiably.

I was always an "All Nite (Don't Stop)" superfan.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 30 December 2013 05:48 (eleven years ago)

"All Nite (Don't Stop)" or "Feedback".

LeRooLeRoo, Monday, 30 December 2013 05:56 (eleven years ago)

Kind of amazed that "Got 'til It's Gone" and "Every Time" weren't hits, as I remember hearing them everywhere for a while.

"Got 'til It's Gone" was not released as a commercial single, making it ineligible to appear on the Hot 100 or various other charts under the chart rules that existed at that time, greatly hindering the song's chart performance despite its popularity and acclaim.[88]

One of my favorite videos of all-time too.

"Go Deep" is another one I thought was a bigger hit. But, yes, "Pleasure Principle" is my vote.

Throb is disgusting filth and I love it.

"Throb"

It's pure nostalgia, I know. That album (Janet? You know, the breasts album.) came out the first year I moved to NYC, and I was working in a record shop, so I heard that album approximately 10,000 times a day and after 3 months of that, I never ever wanted to hear Janet Jackson Ever. Again. But I dug the album out a year or two ago (on Spodify, actually) and when I put it on, and I could still sing along with every word, and the power of music I hadn't heard in 20 years triggered this rush of memories of things I hadn't thought about in 20 years, and sense memories of what that time in my life was like. It's funny how untouched musical memory has the power to turn something you never wanted to hear again into something so powerfully beautiful and evocative.

"Rock With U" is a pretty hot late-period jam.

There's no way "Pleasure Principle" doesn't take down this elephant thing hardcore.

IMO the top 5 (unordered):

The Pleasure Principle
Got 'til It's Gone
Go Deep
Girlfriend/Boyfriend (with Blackstreet)
All Nite (Don't Stop)

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 19:29 (eleven years ago)

(a bunch of these went #1 on the dance and/or R&B charts and are included on Janet's compilation of #1 singles)
