Walking on Broken Glass for me, though there are several worthy contenders here.

The Doors or Abba, what a decision

The Zinger Not the Zung (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 13:51 (eleven years ago)

"lost without u"

k3vin k., Wednesday, 1 January 2014 14:00 (eleven years ago)

Was going to vote for the Byrds or the Pretenders. But that ELO song is pretty amazing.

jetfan, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 16:32 (eleven years ago)

Haven't Got Time for the Pain. I love everything about this song. The coda is amazing. But it was very hard to not vote for Brass In Pocket, Ohio, Eight Miles High, Riders on the Storm, and Knowing Me, Knowing You. I also have a special soft spot for Head Games.

Great poll idea, thanks ol' Wrink P's think piece!

Inty Tyga Et La Tyga Loma (Dr. Joseph A. Ofalt), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 16:59 (eleven years ago)

Wait. Since when was a Jessica Simpson song ever considered notable?

MarkoP, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 17:01 (eleven years ago)

Leaving the Pretenders' name off of the ballot ain't gonna stop me from voting for them!

Inside Lewellyn Sinclair (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 17:10 (eleven years ago)

1. "Eight Miles High," 2. "Ohio," 3. "Baby Blue," 4. "Hippychick"

Surfin' Safari

Mmm yes hello (crüt), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 18:15 (eleven years ago)

Was thinking about "Surfin' Safari," but I forget how devastating "Knowing Me, Knowing You" is.

timellison, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 19:31 (eleven years ago)

strange magic vs brass in pocket vs modern love

my whole family is catholic so look at the pickle i'm in (zachlyon), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 21:07 (eleven years ago)

is it weird that before now i always thought "lost without u" was released in the late 90s/early 00s/definitely earlier than 07? i don't remember it ever being a new song.

my whole family is catholic so look at the pickle i'm in (zachlyon), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 21:10 (eleven years ago)

"Modern Love" is Bowie's best eighties song imo

"Unforgettable," Natalie Cole, 1991

Huh, can't believe this only peaked at number 14.

"Knowing Me, Knowing You" is my favourite ABBA song (on some days), so that gets my vote.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 21:27 (eleven years ago)

The Jessica Simpson song is actually pretty great.

jaymc, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 21:49 (eleven years ago)

Erasure for me.

ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 22:21 (eleven years ago)

Alfred otm. Don't know what to choose, though.

And if you're trying to cut me down, you know that I might bleed.
'Cause if you're trying to cut me down, I know that you'll succeed.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 22:30 (eleven years ago)

Huh, can't believe this only peaked at number 14.

Yeah, me neither. That fucking song was oppressively inescapable. I didn't even have cable or listen to the radio much in 1991 and I still felt like I heard it hundreds of times.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 22:36 (eleven years ago)

Rio? what 13 songs was that up against in the Hot 100?

how's life, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 22:59 (eleven years ago)

A Little Respect by an absolute mile.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 23:01 (eleven years ago)

"eight miles high" over "hippychick", "strange magic" to show. curious what year billboard decides to stop doing this column. 2040?

balls, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 23:09 (eleven years ago)

a few of these probably chart higher if mtv had been factored in ie got considerably more airplay on mtv than radio - duran duran, aerosmith, erasure for sure, plausibly bowie, u2, lennox, 4 non blondes.

balls, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 23:15 (eleven years ago)

It peaked in April ’83, so I checked Billboard for the week of Apr. 23. The Top 10 that week were:

Come On Eileen
Beat It
Mr. Roboto
Jeopardy
Billie Jean
Der Kommissar
One On One
Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)
Let's Dance
She Blinded Me With Science

That's basically an episode of "I Love The 80s" there.

Ian from Etobicoke (Phil D.), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 23:53 (eleven years ago)

Wow, that top ten strikes me as being incredibly concentrated with iconic records.

timellison, Thursday, 2 January 2014 00:45 (eleven years ago)

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ this. what a list.

Daniel, Esq 2, Thursday, 2 January 2014 00:47 (eleven years ago)

wondering what 11-13 were now.

surprising myself by voting Erasure over ELO and Bowie but I just realized I really do love "A Little Respect" more than the other songs

Sandy, Thursday, 2 January 2014 05:52 (eleven years ago)

def Byrds

Quarterpayne McRapp (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 2 January 2014 05:54 (eleven years ago)

Gave what will probably be Billy Joel's only vote

Frontier Psychiatrist, Thursday, 2 January 2014 06:54 (eleven years ago)

But the exclusion of "Major Tom (Coming Home)" from this list of #14s is a travesty

Eight Miles High

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 2 January 2014 17:19 (eleven years ago)

man, what a list. 4nb is a big turd but otherwise, wow.

napgenius (goole), Thursday, 2 January 2014 17:35 (eleven years ago)

Gave what will probably be Billy Joel's only vote

Gave what will probably be Genesis's only vote

Hideous Lump, Friday, 3 January 2014 04:35 (eleven years ago)

love that genesis so much but this line up is too strong

balls, Friday, 3 January 2014 07:20 (eleven years ago)

"What's Up?" didn't get higher than #14 in the US?! I guess it was a bigger hit in Europe, because it was pretty much inescapable during that year.

Tuomas, Friday, 3 January 2014 09:51 (eleven years ago)

I think I'm possibly the only ilxor who actually likes that song! But I'm not perverse enough to vote for it over Byrds/Pretenders/ABBA.

"Eight Miles High" it is.

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 3 January 2014 14:40 (eleven years ago)

this list seems way too great, how did so many of these songs not climb higher.

this is between "Eight Miles High," "Riders on the Storm, "Strange Magic," "Big Shot," "Brass in Pocket," "Whip It," "Rio," "A Little Respect" or "Feel Good Inc." voting The Pretenders yet again.

Bee OK, Saturday, 4 January 2014 03:49 (eleven years ago)

― balls, Friday, January 3, 2014 2:20 AM

Yeah, the line up was pretty daunting, so I copped out and voted for the song I most wanted to here right now.

I listen to "Eight Miles High" whenever I'm on a plane, right as it's taking off, to assuage my fear of flying. It works, so it's got my vote.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 13 January 2014 00:19 (eleven years ago)

here's an odd blind spot i may as well admit to here -- i've never, to my knowledge, heard "Eight Miles High" in my life. i just put it on and it's not ringing any bells.

some dude, Monday, 13 January 2014 00:33 (eleven years ago)

hope we get some "Hippychick" voters.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 January 2014 00:33 (eleven years ago)

some dude, really?!

you should listen to the hüsker dü version now and then you will have done it all

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Monday, 13 January 2014 00:35 (eleven years ago)

and the soporific Roxy Music version.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 January 2014 00:36 (eleven years ago)

ok i listened to the HD one and joined the "Eight Miles High" club. it's ok, i guess. ::shrugs::

some dude, Monday, 13 January 2014 00:37 (eleven years ago)

welcome!
