I remember the vinyl had goofy inscriptions on the out-grooves. One was "star-strangled Bangles."

(I donated my copy to the local library about 3 years ago, whereupon someone likely snapped it up during one of their record/book sales and made out like a bandit on Ebay)

Going with "Hey Joni." I figured out/assumed the years Lee recited were the birth years of each member of the band. "Wow, one of them is in their THIRTIES?!" I thought when I was 16.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 22:34 (eleven years ago)

ranaldo's tracks are the best.

reflexed "hey joni", but millimeters separate these tracks in my mind

rhyme heals all goons (m bison), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 22:59 (eleven years ago)

This was the first SY record I ever heard and I still love love love it. The Neu!-ish last 90 seconds of ''Cross the Breeze' are so great - I could listen to them jam on that forever.

bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 23:03 (eleven years ago)

sorry - "Teenage Riot" is clearly the greatest song on here (but I love them all)

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 23:35 (eleven years ago)

was there not already a thread with trilogy being mangled into three parts so as to COMPLETELY DE-LEGITIMIZE POLL RESULTS?

j., Wednesday, 1 January 2014 23:39 (eleven years ago)

The Sprawl. Coolest Kim vocal

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 23:41 (eleven years ago)

I skipped Teenage and went for Silver Rocket.

Iago Galdston, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 23:41 (eleven years ago)

Eric's Trip, but only by the tiniest fraction ahead of the other Ranaldo songs.

oldbowie (WilliamC), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 23:44 (eleven years ago)

almost all of these has been my favorite at some point. this holiday season, i'm going with hyperstation

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 23:48 (eleven years ago)

Everything about 'Cross the Breeze is so perfect.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 2 January 2014 00:52 (eleven years ago)

Hyperstation's been my favourite Sonic Youth song since first hearing Daydream Nation in high school art class.

jmm, Thursday, 2 January 2014 00:57 (eleven years ago)

"Candle"

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 2 January 2014 02:22 (eleven years ago)

Apart from the songs, my favourite parts of this album change - most recently its the more chaotic verses of Rain King. Other favourites include the build up coming back into Silver Rocket, the drumless 10 seconds in the middle of Kissability, and the first chords of Hyperstation.

Master of Treacle, Thursday, 2 January 2014 03:20 (eleven years ago)

I prefer EVOL but there's still not a whole lot I would change about it. Possibily the snare sound if I was to nitpick, and the only thing that kind of dates the album imo

Master of Treacle, Thursday, 2 January 2014 03:28 (eleven years ago)

It = Daydream

Master of Treacle, Thursday, 2 January 2014 03:28 (eleven years ago)

there's so much to choose from... i'm at eric's trip, 'cross the breeze, the sprawl at this moment in time.

OutdoorFish, Thursday, 2 January 2014 03:29 (eleven years ago)

is that simple enough?

fuck you

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 2 January 2014 03:31 (eleven years ago)

for me it's close between this, EVOL and sister, but this is the one i started with and it's just so EPIC.

OutdoorFish, Thursday, 2 January 2014 03:34 (eleven years ago)

CROSS THE BREEZE. #1 on my SY ballot poll

Quarterpayne McRapp (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 2 January 2014 04:32 (eleven years ago)

My great thought in the shower this morning was that Hyperstation is SY's version of the "Woke up, fell out of bed" section in A Day in the Life. Starts the same way ("Falling out of sleep I hit the floor"), occupies a similar middle placement in the longer epic, and it's about being half in a dream! QED

jmm, Thursday, 2 January 2014 17:20 (eleven years ago)

Haven't listened to this in far far to long. I will, then vote. Right now, I'm thinking Silver Rocket or Riot.

Mule, Thursday, 2 January 2014 17:33 (eleven years ago)

The bright, shiny obvious one: TAR. These polls are stupid yet fun, whatever.

cross the breeze, easy

nostormo, Thursday, 2 January 2014 22:46 (eleven years ago)

Gah, so many amazing songs, so hard to choose one.

Candle.

nate woolls, Thursday, 2 January 2014 23:30 (eleven years ago)

total trash or hyperstation. I love how tt crashes and burns towards the end and then revs up for one last refrain. It's a psychdelic album.

'did u find yr shit'

'your fuckin memory just goes out the winda'

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 3 January 2014 17:55 (eleven years ago)

Instead of paring the songs down as the group usually did, the months-long writing process for Daydream Nation resulted in long jams, some of a half hour. Several friends of the band, including Henry Rollins, had long praised the band's long live improvisations and told the group that its records never captured them.

Ƹ̴Ӂ̴Ʒ (brimstead), Friday, 3 January 2014 23:54 (eleven years ago)

wow a reason to praise rollins!

OutdoorFish, Saturday, 4 January 2014 00:48 (eleven years ago)

Voted "Cross The Breeze" which encapsulates the bands many dimensions in a single epic track.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Saturday, 4 January 2014 01:08 (eleven years ago)

i would like to have a comp/mix of 'influences' and contemporaries of this record so i could hear its originality better

i listened to the damned debut just before this today and it made the stretched-out-ness of the songs stand out more

j., Saturday, 4 January 2014 01:12 (eleven years ago)

voted for "Candle" because it lights the way, candle

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 4 January 2014 01:14 (eleven years ago)

contemporaries: galaxie 500, dinosaur jr, the dream syndicate, pixies, pavement, sebadoh
touch me, i'm sick came out around this time

OutdoorFish, Saturday, 4 January 2014 01:30 (eleven years ago)

Was CtB the highest DN placer in the ballot poll? I know it was top 10 but cant remember if TAR beat it...

lisa...Grampsy??? (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 4 January 2014 05:03 (eleven years ago)

6. 'Cross the Breeze
5. Teen Age Riot

fit and working again, Saturday, 4 January 2014 05:37 (eleven years ago)

that's why i don't like those polls, too much great stuff gets disregarded.

OutdoorFish, Saturday, 4 January 2014 10:59 (eleven years ago)

voted eric's trip.

Fizzles, Saturday, 4 January 2014 12:01 (eleven years ago)

Not sure I can go along Trilogy being split like this..

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 4 January 2014 12:07 (eleven years ago)

i listened to the damned debut just before this today and it made the stretched-out-ness of the songs stand out more

That used to put me off too, which I is why I preferred Sister and Evol. They seemed more intense and alert, more anxious to get to the point, whereas Daydream Nation frequently has a stoned haziness about it. I'd usually skip Total Trash for that reason, going right to Hey Joni or Trilogy. But listening to the album as a whole the last few days, I'm liking this aspect of its character a lot more. I like the feeling of languor and unhurried ease, like we have all morning to hang out, no point in rushing it.

jmm, Saturday, 4 January 2014 15:02 (eleven years ago)

i think it's great that we have both types of SY!

OutdoorFish, Saturday, 4 January 2014 15:34 (eleven years ago)

it doesn't put me off, i actually wanted to hear that kind of thing a bit more. i'm familiar with their contemporaries, but the sound of what they're doing doesn't totally register with me—they get going and i just hear ~~~~sonic youth~~~~.

j., Saturday, 4 January 2014 17:31 (eleven years ago)

Contemporary not yet mentioned, and maybe the best one for anyone wanting more Kim-style Daydream Nation-style songs. I knew this band's earlier stuff, but never heard this particular album until recently when I learned it was on Spotify/Rdio. 1989 I think, and it's easily their best I think. Pretty sure the beginning minute or so could fool a lot of casual SY fans. Play loud.

i was thinking more of similar-sounding/thinking contempos that SY ~blew away~ w/ their crazy tunings drones and whatnot

so that you cld A/B them and go, ohhhh THAT'S what sonic youth sounded like before there was sonic youth

just copyin' and pastin', you mean
will be interesting to compare those results to when people are actually concentrating on the songs in hand

OutdoorFish, Saturday, 4 January 2014 20:15 (eleven years ago)

i see no one voted for trilogy in that ballot poll

OutdoorFish, Saturday, 4 January 2014 21:16 (eleven years ago)

I think it was just decided that you had to vote for 3 songs individually, not for the whole trilogy as one ballot entry

nostormo, Monday, 20 January 2014 12:28 (eleven years ago)

"Silver Rocket."

This along with Goo are my two favorite Sonic Youth albums by a wide margin. Which means that I imagien a world where Sonic Youth is a pop band.
