I was around all weekend.. and I didn't meet anyone :(. Blame it on my lack of social skills, feeling like a total geek going up to people who I've seen pictures of and asking are you Dan Perry?? Ned?? Maura.com?? and banking on seeing Daver Raposa to point people out for me. (Dave brg30=Bryan fron Flywheel, the secret is out)
But most importantly.

WHO YELLED ROCKEST!!!

See I soo tired that I'm 2 years behind I ment 2002 Back to sleep

WHO YELLED ROCKEST!!!

That was me.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

tee hee.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

ROCK, ROCKER, ROCKIST!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Brian!

I was incognito the entire weekend. That spot of blank floor space near the bar? C'est moi.

I miss the Flywheel.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

BRYAN, even!

Christ, it's too early for me, and it's past noon.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

The "rockist" comment needs some unpacking. It was in response to this guy (Byron Coley, maybe?) who kept shouting out "SUCK GEFFEN’S C*CK" and "SUCK CORPORATE C*CK" just before Sonic Youth took the stage. I got an inordinate amount satisfaction from saying that -- it was extremely silly for those in the know, and baffling for those who weren't, which was just about everyone.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

did anyone go to the sunburned show?

steve k, Tuesday, 15 October 2002 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

daddino you BAD DUDE!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

i caught the Sunburned show, yeah. 60(?)+ people packed into a sweltering loft. got a bit stuffy, natch, and i'd had allsk i could standsk by the time NNCK came on (@ 1:30 a.m., followed by Joshua and headliners 6 Organs of Admittance). did catch Sunburned Hand of the Man, at least, and enjoyed most of their primal-rock therapy session. guitars aplenty, just as many saxes, keys, silverware-down-the-backstairs clatter, the occasional floor-stomping ur-funk groove. when they were 'on', it got you right here (*indicates gut*) and/or here (*indicates groin*). just as much aimless flailing, though. how do their recordings stack up?

I'd be shocked if that was Byron Coley, even ironically.

I dunno. Someone suggested that to me so I thought it might've been an in-joke or something.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw a good bit of stuff at the Charlestown loft. Sunburn Hand Of The Man were on...were's my Solarcaine...I don't think it was Byron was doing the heckling..but I did do a double take when I heard the "R" word.

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

While we're making haphazard guesses, I'll through out Jon Cook as the heckler for good measure.

Missed it all, was sick.

(brg, I promise I'll get that Buckley CDR in the mail to ya this week.)

hstencil, Tuesday, 15 October 2002 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone suggested that to me

Namely me, I just thought he might have wanted to have fun. He's a friendly guy! I was right next to Mike when he called that out, so clearly BRG, you needed to say hi, for now I am sad to have missed another Good ILx Person.

Terrastock 2002 = mothergoddamnfucking incredible and then some. :-)

Shit, I thought it was for the "Suck Kraftwerk Cock" cock after the band before Sonic Youth. Maybe my hearing was just fried by that point in the night.
Im just relieved that Sonic Youth decided to try and play something instead of sonic wanking for 40 minutes.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 02:12 (twenty-three years ago)

''play something instead of sonic wanking for 40 minutes''

imagine the sonic effort that this would require.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

a friend of mine is in Sunburn Hand of the Man. I actually played the friggin xylophone with them one night. Same loft. Good times. Don't know if he still is in the band though. Did they have a bongo player? Named Critter? Ponytail?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

imagine the sonic effort that this would require.

Surely it would be close to sonic death.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

heh...the image that's come up now...don't get inside ma brane noodles.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I think there were two "Cock" shoutings, one directed at SY's opener and one directed at SY themsevles.

Surface of Eceon were the only ones to pull off the "one song set" motif ... Windy & Carl was easily the most boring set I've ever attended.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I was at Terrastock for exactly one band (the Lothars, who were on before Sonic Youth) and I heard "Die you rockist" or something, and it sounded just like Ned to me. Can Mike and Ned possibly have the same voice?

Kris (aqueduct), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I was right next to Mike when he called that out, so clearly BRG, you needed to say hi, for now I am sad to have missed another Good ILx Person.

Aww Ned I honestly didn't see where it came from. I wanted to meet up with everyone but I didn't make it into Boston till Friday morning. 1st round on me next time :)

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Windy & Carl was easily the most boring set I've ever attended.

We shall agree to disagree (violently if calmly). You are right about how Surface of Eceon rooled.

Can Mike and Ned possibly have the same voice?

Nope. The vibes must have rubbed off. Your cousin's a cool guy, BTW. And yes, BRG, next time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked Windy and Carl myself, they got sandwiched between Ghost who were mind blowing good and The Major Stars who were merely excellent.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Windy & Carl was easily the most boring set I've ever attended.

did you, you know, see damon and naomi? aside from batoh's guitar, truly one of the most bland, boring things i've ever experienced. i'd throw all the records i owned by them and galaxie 500 in the trash and burn them if i had ever been sucker enough to buy them.

your null fame (yournullfame), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

If you had bought With Ghost or any Galaxie 500 I would have saved them from the fire and run gleefully away.
Still that little snoozefest on Saturday was painful.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Damon and Naomi are the worst band I've ever seen. I seriously wanted to kill them.

Kris (aqueduct), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Can Mike and Ned possibly have the same voice?

Our voices might be more similar than either of us imagine, but I hear my voice as being slightly reedier and slightly scratchier than Ned's. Also, I talk nowhere near as fast as Ned. Few people do.

For what it's worth, what I shouted was "FUCK YOU, ROCKIST!"

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Now come on you may not like them, but both are not that bad and remeber karma is a b*tch ;)

Still that little snoozefest on Saturday was painful.

Remember, I was the one planning on getting over to the North End for dinner specifically to avoid that set! And did anyone listen? ;-) As it is, I just went back to the hotel room and rested for a bit.

A Terrastock performer who shall remain nameless asked me on the way out from the Surface of Eceon set who was next. I said "Damon and Naomi" and the response was (said with a laugh), "Ah, the Sleepy Time Nap show."

Also, I talk nowhere near as fast as Ned. Few people do.

Heh heh heh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
This is all old news now, I am sure, but did anyone else think that the Charalambides were the best of the festival? Man, I loved their set so much. I thought that W&C's set was great, but maybe that is biased since I love them already...but while I only really "enjoyed" the Charalambides before, I now see them in completely different light, and am currently in love with them.

daron

PS- also, thanks for saying nice things about surface, we were really nervous to play such a big crowd.

Daron Gardner (Daron Gardner), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, charalambides live performance is where they shine - they have an amazing kind of telepathy going on. i've seen them twice now and both times were brilliant.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

A few weeks later and I can't recall who the Charalambides were off the top of my head.

Though I still vividly remeber enjoy Ghost greatly.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 9 December 2002 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I enjoy Ghost on record a lot, but I really love how mellow and beautiful they are, and thought that they were a little too bombastic and more on the uniteresting side for me, live. The songs of D&N that they played on were good, though I am not the biggest D&N fan.

The Charalambides were the 3 people in the big room...all of them sitting down.

They played the first day, before W&C.

Daron Gardner (Daron Gardner), Monday, 9 December 2002 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

They were good ideed.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 9 December 2002 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i know this is bad because they are *INDIE* but did anyone catch Lilys?

gygax!, Monday, 9 December 2002 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't impressed. I think it was mostly their attitude, which came off the wrong way. After logging several hours in a festival the littlest things can throw me off enjoying a band.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 9 December 2002 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The circle of myself, Mike Daddino and Chris Barrus had a debate after the show whether Mr. Lilys is trying to be the poor man's Richard Ashcroft or the poor man's Evan Dando. Either way, VERY poor.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 December 2002 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

well that certainly sounds a bit worse than his few shows in LA that I saw this year would indicate.

would you happen to know if aaron sperske (kxlu, further, beachwood sparks) was drumming and jason falkner (um, alt-pop retro) on bass or was it an entirely different band?

gygax!, Monday, 9 December 2002 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know, but the whole band had exquisitely fitting trousers.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 9 December 2002 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Strange...Charalambides have always disappointed me live (@ the 2 Terrastocks), but I always buy the records. Lilys were annoying beyond belief...wanted to climb up onstage & slap Kurt. Ghost were indeed magnificent. Kinski have been a highlight of both T4 & T5 (but the record I have is dull).
