I was going to have a Krautrock day but Ralf refused to let Kraftwerk play under the Krautrock banner and it fell apart.

whiney needs to let me have some fun; i can't afford the big ears festival.

Esa-Pekka Merkerson (get bent), Sunday, 12 January 2014 19:34 (eleven years ago)

all these festivals are expensive and weird to me. Like you're paying all-inclusive spa resort type money to go hear some indie bands in the mud. (Not that I particularly want to go to a spa resort either.)

really into the "BE YOUNG, AT...THE MUSIC FESTIVAL" tone of some of the pr materials for the big festivals

combination hair (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 12 January 2014 21:46 (eleven years ago)

like when I was young enough to have enjoyed that kind of thing there was no way I could have scraped together that kind of money, and now I just don't think i'd enjoy it much.

my version of a music festival was sniffing glue while standing near the radios at Sears

and I was grateful

Here are some reasons that I like music festivals

1. The "rock club" dynamic is inherently uncomfortable in the times when bands aren't playing. It's dark, the in-between band music is too loud to hold a conversation, and your trapped in a room (or a bar) for 30 minutes to and hour as you wait for the next bands to go on — i.e., a system that, by coincidence or design, pushes people to buy more alcohol. Festivals eliminate any downtime. They are democratic and you can engage as much or as little as you want. You can bolt from band to band and see 10 hours of music with no break, or you can see one band and have a quiet conversation in the grass.

2. All of these things feel better to your body than standing on the concrete floor of a rock club. A) Standing in grass (Coachella), B) Standing in mud with water shoes (Bonnaroo), C) Standing on a carpet (ATP) or D) Standing barefoot on a beach (Hangout)

3. If you have smart, adventurous taste, you can avoid the corny indie fuxxors and have intimate relaxing shows. A festival is only as good as it's undercard. One Bonnaroo scheduled like Grizzly Bear, Santigold, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs all at the same time. It was the most chill King Sunny Ade show I've ever been to

4. Also, if you have adventurous taste, you can climb out of your internet bubble and see how many people go apeshit for Eric Church or Dog Blood compared to flavor-of-the-month blog bands

5. If you are a grown adult who can;'t be assed to be out waiting until 3 am on a worknight to see a DJ, then you can get your EDM fix via shows that run on time.

6. This is probably more about me than anything, but when I see a show in NYC my mind often wanders to tomorrow's work day or sleeping in my bed and etc. When you are in another town seeing a fest, you have nothing to do but be THERE.

That's how I break it down an extant

you don't drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes, do you?

I could see Whiney drinking cigarettes and smoking alcohol, for that is how he rolls.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 01:30 (eleven years ago)

i just don't get how you are "trapped" -- rock clubs aren't like airports

sarahell, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 01:31 (eleven years ago)

managed to come up with a festival lineup that would attract exactly one attendee -- me.

No I don't

Also, give me some great ideas about what to do in between bands at shows. Bonus points, remember I don't live in OAKLAND and sometimes it gets to be like 10 degrees outside and also we generally don't have cars

lisa 龜 (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 17:47 (eleven years ago)

coachella is incredibly enjoyable, if i lived in cali i would go every year

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 17:49 (eleven years ago)

My three complaint about outdoor "rock" festivals are that a) half the time, the rigs aren't big enough to make the bands sound convincing (Pitchfork, Field Day), b) any hour-plus long parking escapades (Coachella), c) unloveliness of the location. Latitude, Inferno, Primavera and Off Festival (Poland) are the three festivals I would pay money to fly to the city to see bands, if I liked bands

pretty krulls make glaives (flamboyant goon tie included), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 18:45 (eleven years ago)

*four festivals, I added Off Festival, it takes place in a forest. There is a nice festival in St. Malo but the venues themselves aren't all that great and the headliner is usually Smashing Pumpkins, would rather just go to St. Malo and hang out

ah it looks like an atp lineup (in fact i think i've seen about 3/4 of those bands at atps) and they managed to make it profitable for quite a while.

Merdeyeux, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 18:50 (eleven years ago)

i would absolutely go to day one of that.

Subnedliner for sure. Was gonna grab some classics from ilx past too. Wrinklepaws. Hologram of T✧✧@K✧✧.E✧✧. Etc. Was taking too much of my precious time, so project aborted. I'm just not cut out to be a festival curator.
