Green Day - Dookie

b-but why Jonathan?

i think we've done this before. this time, can we have some reasoning too.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

sure:

THIS THREAD NOW REQUIRES LOGIC.

I thought it was a boring, commericial retread of early punk stuff. Now I see it as a catchy pop album. If we could have seen what "pop-punk" would become in 6 years...ugh.

Material Issue - International Pop Overthrow

Got rid of it sometime in the late 90's when I'd had my fill of power-pop and didn't listen to it much. Just picked it up again recently because, well...I was feeling nostalgic and I missed it.

Fripp/Eno - No Pussyfooting.

Luckily, the second time I got it from the library. Returned it promptly.

Mercury Rev's "Deserter's Songs" -- and then I remembered why I sold it in the first place-- and sold it again! Faaaack! I hope that never happens again!

Rahul Kamath (Rahul Kamath), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

cds I've sold and want back:
Brady Bunch: Sunshine Day
Rush: Presto
Queen: Miracle
David Bowie: Never Let Me Down

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Presto was my first Rush album back in 1989. You couldn't pay me to take it back now...

Actually, studying your list, I figure there's no way you're being serious.

paul cox (paul cox), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

No, actually I'm very serious. The reason I sold all them in the first place was because they are commonly thought of as bad. But I have often regreted not being able to listen to tracks from these albums. I'm just waiting to find them in used bins to pick them up again.

Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes. I think I was heavily into prog at the time and it was too conventional. I did like the "Sweet Jane" cover, though. I got rid of Alice Cooper's Love It To Death and Killer LPs because I was "too sophisticated" for that stuff, but I don't think I've re-bought (the cheap used copies never seem to appear). I have sold very few of my records over the years, no more than 10, probably. I usually figure if I liked it at one point, I may like it again, or I see myself in my 80s or 90s slappin' it on the turntable to get in touch with my younger self.

I tend not to sell albums, but I have sold and re-bought quite a few singles, including quite a few Sub Pop 7".

I think I have bought and sold Slint's self-titled debut a couple or three times. In fact, I'm not entirely sure whether or not I own it right now. As much as I love Spiderland, the debut is very hit and miss for me--some songs I like, others I don't, and in neither case are my feelings strong enough to justify much passion either way. Perhaps part of my ambivalence comes from the fact that it seems like just a collection of formative tracks next to a (dare I say) visionary album like Spiderland.

I bought Jurassic 5's Quality Control (and gave it a positive write-up for City Pages, when I was a more enthusiastic lad), then sold it, then bought it again, then sold it again. I haven't bothered to look for it since (though I still like "Twelve").

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Broadcast's The Noise Made By People (thanks to ILM), although I listened to Work and Non-Work the other day for the first time since all this and realized it still puts Noise to shame.

("I'd rather hear the end product of lots of elbow grease and relentless tweaking to perfection than the Jiffy Crunk ten-minute lazy-assed production jobs that McDonaldize so much mainstream rap." Oh boy will I get murdered for that.)

David Bowie: Never Let Me Down
Yep. Nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. The A-side is actually quite fun. A retread of earlier glories, I admit, but still fun.

Lord Custos Alpha (Lord Custos Alpha), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

David Grubbs - The Spectrum Between
Descendents - Enjoy
Dag Nasty - the first 2 albums
Squirrel Bait - the first 2 albums
The Wipers - Alien Boy
