Has to be head over heels. My favorite tears for fears track by a mile. Great use in Donnie Darko, too

LimbsKing, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 16:28 (eleven years ago)

Drive

crüt, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 16:30 (eleven years ago)

Tough one! "I Feel 4 U", "She Bop", "Hold Me Now", "One Night in Bangkok", "Head Over Heels", "Freedom... On of those.

LeRooLeRoo, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 16:48 (eleven years ago)

chaka khan by some distance w/ commodores and tear for fears runners up. at the time i was convinced 'you're the inspiration' was the greatest love song ever written. i was wrong. much love for 'never surrender' also if only cuz i remember a story about corey hart from around that time where he said 'ppl know me as the guy who wears his sunglasses at night but from now on they'll know me as the guy who never surrenders' and i've always wanted to run into him and go 'hey! it's that guy who never surrenders!'

Songs I feel bad I can't vote for because "I Feel For You" is the greatest single of all time:

The Romantics – "Talking in Your Sleep"
The Jacksons and Mick Jagger – "State of Shock"
Pointer Sisters – "Jump (For My Love)"
Aretha Franklin – "Freeway of Love"
Tears for Fears – "Head Over Heels"

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 21:32 (eleven years ago)

The thing with that Aretha album: every single was better than its predecessor.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 22:01 (eleven years ago)

I voted for "Nightshift" and would vote for it a thousand times more. "She Bop" is a jam too.

Euler, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 22:03 (eleven years ago)

Voted for TFF. Runners-up: "Drive", "State of Shock", and (a guilty pleasure of mine) "One Night in Bangkok"

also, lol at that little Corey Hart anecdote

Frontier Psychiatrist, Thursday, 16 January 2014 12:14 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, the Corey Hart story is killing me right now

Voted for Tears For Fears

Algerian Horsebeater (some dude), Thursday, 16 January 2014 13:37 (eleven years ago)

Always felt "State of Shock" was underrated (understandably, given that it was treated as the follow-up to Thriller at the time), but if "I Feel For You" is in a poll, I pretty much have to vote for it.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 16 January 2014 14:37 (eleven years ago)

Commodores – "Nightshift"
Tears for Fears – "Head Over Heels"
Cyndi Lauper – "She Bop"
Thompson Twins – "Hold Me Now"

I should also throw in a sentimental Honourable Mention to "Talking in Your Sleep," as its one of my earliest musical memories.

Inside Lewellyn Sinclair (cryptosicko), Thursday, 16 January 2014 15:06 (eleven years ago)

ok there's several good singles on here and then there's "I Feel for You," a fucking timeless masterpiece whose nearest competition here, probably "Freedom," isn't even remotely in its class

combination hair (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 16 January 2014 15:06 (eleven years ago)

plenty of winners but Nightshift is in it's own league

g simmel, Thursday, 16 January 2014 15:56 (eleven years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Phenomenal list, but I'm voting "One Night in Bangkok" because it made so little sense to me as a kid and the video was great. "tea girls warm and sweet (warm sweet) some are set up in the somerset maugham suite."

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 24 January 2014 00:20 (eleven years ago)

The Romantics – "Talking in Your Sleep"
The Cars – "Drive"
Steve Perry – "Oh Sherrie"
Harold Faltermeyer – "Axel F"
DeBarge – "Rhythm of the Night"
Simple Minds – "Alive and Kicking"
Murray Head – "One Night in Bangkok"
Tears for Fears – "Head Over Heels"
Wham! – "Freedom"

^^^ all amazing

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 24 January 2014 00:26 (eleven years ago)

Top three are my top three. "Talking In Your Sleep" is quite possibly my favourite '80s use of TOO LOUD drums, so the Romantics take it over Cyndi and Chaka.

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 24 January 2014 01:28 (eleven years ago)

"Stuck on You" is one of Lionel's better ballads, and underrated too.

president of the people's republic of antarctica (Arctic Mindbath), Friday, 24 January 2014 01:31 (eleven years ago)

wtf, "Talking In Your Sleep" went to #3? The song everyone remembers by The Romantics didn't even make the top 40.

Lee626, Friday, 24 January 2014 02:56 (eleven years ago)

There should be a thread for that: small hits that are much more famous than the big ones

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 24 January 2014 03:03 (eleven years ago)

"I Feel For You" -- finally one of these polls with an easy answer

channel 9's meaty urologist (WilliamC), Friday, 24 January 2014 03:09 (eleven years ago)

The only thing "iffy" about "I Feel For You" is its initials.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Friday, 24 January 2014 03:12 (eleven years ago)

drive v. hold me now v. o sherrie

Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 24 January 2014 03:12 (eleven years ago)

much love for 'never surrender' also if only cuz i remember a story about corey hart from around that time where he said 'ppl know me as the guy who wears his sunglasses at night but from now on they'll know me as the guy who never surrenders' and i've always wanted to run into him and go 'hey! it's that guy who never surrenders!'

I like Prince's version of I Feel 4 U better; voting She Bop

stop ingesting (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 24 January 2014 05:00 (eleven years ago)

Voted Chaka Khan. Turning 14 in 1984 was so awesome.

Darin, Friday, 24 January 2014 06:55 (eleven years ago)

Not enthusiastic about any of these.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 24 January 2014 07:04 (eleven years ago)

Voted for She Bop, which I liked a lot at the time and which is pretty decent actually, especially compared to everything here I recognize. Listening to "Nightshift" now and it's pretty good. I don't actually remember this.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 24 January 2014 07:08 (eleven years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.
