My Top 50 Albums of 2002 List (with 12 years of hindsight)

I happened upon a post I made in The Big Takeover Yahoo! Group at the end of 2002 with the subject "Because I was Bored." It is possible that I made some longish short lists when making end-of-year lists back in the day, but this is the only one I could find that is really fleshed out. Also, it's old enough where I can give it new perspective.

Which of these was your favorite that year? What did I totally miss? And for those who maybe made lists back then: Are there things from then that you have changed your mind about after a dozen years?

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Friday, 17 January 2014 11:34 (eleven years ago)

My immediate thoughts:

Christ, did I really like that Chevelle record so much?
Why on earth was Electric Wizard so low?
Some of these, I don't even remember the last time I listened to them.

Heh, I've only heard three of these... Voting QOTSA, played it a couple of months ago and enjoyed it as much as I did in 2002.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 17 January 2014 12:12 (eleven years ago)

Electric Wizard. It's not their best album though.

An embarrassing doorman and garbage man (dog latin), Friday, 17 January 2014 12:42 (eleven years ago)

Dälek by a zillion zillion miles

lovely cuddly fluffy dope (imago), Friday, 17 January 2014 12:46 (eleven years ago)

Didn't see the Flaming Lips' Yoshimi on here...

LimbsKing, Sunday, 19 January 2014 18:33 (eleven years ago)

Voting for The Walkmen. Even though they've made a few good records now that one is still their best by quite a way.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 19 January 2014 18:45 (eleven years ago)

High on Fire. I shd re-listen to that Chevelle record tho.

stop ingesting (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 19 January 2014 19:14 (eleven years ago)

I loved that Walkmen album -- Dälek and Thee Michelle Gun Elephant and Jucifer had great albums too.

Esa-Pekka Merkerson (get bent), Sunday, 19 January 2014 19:55 (eleven years ago)

i think I Get Wet is the only one here i've listened to since 2002

ciderpress, Sunday, 19 January 2014 19:57 (eleven years ago)

This was year zero for me as far as really exploring music. As a consequence, most of what I listened to that year was the more popular forms of indie rock, edm, hip hop, etc. I loved that Walkman album but probably shouldn't vote since the only other album on that list that I've heard is QOTSA.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Sunday, 19 January 2014 20:59 (eleven years ago)

Dalek

I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Sunday, 19 January 2014 21:03 (eleven years ago)

Voted Andre WK, though isn't that a 2001 release?

MarkoP, Sunday, 19 January 2014 21:05 (eleven years ago)

Maybe it did but is placed pretty highly on the 2002 Pazz & Jop so I wasn't the only one who voted for it.

For shits and giggles, here is where my albums placed on the P&J (omitting the vast amount which did not) through the top 400 that Christgau was nice enough to include on his page:

Queens Of The Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf (Interscope) #11
N.E.R.D. - In Search Of... (Virgin) #19
Andrew W. K. - I Get Wet (Island) #28
Paul Westerberg - Stereo (Vagrant) #59
Steve Earle –- Jerusalem (Artemis) #61
The Walkmen - Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me is Gone (Star Time) #86
Audioslave – Audioslave (Epic) #89
Foo Fighters - One By One (RCA) #91
High On Fire - Surrounded By Thieves (Relapse) #140
Dälek - From Filthy Tongue Of Gods And Griots (Ipecac) #198
The Black Keys - The Big Come Up (Alive) #285
Chevelle - Wonder What's Next (Epic) #390

i get wet all the time

nathey, Monday, 20 January 2014 10:51 (eleven years ago)

whoops that sentence is probably better with quote marks

nathey, Monday, 20 January 2014 10:51 (eleven years ago)

And here are some things that charted there that I didn't listen to until afterwards that probably would have been on the list (or at least would appear on a lost for 2002 if I had to compile it today):

The Streets - Original Pirate Material
Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
The Hives - Veni Vidi Vicious
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
RJD2 - Deadringer
The White Stripes - White Blood Cells
Black Dice - Beaches and Canyons
Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around
Hot Hot Heat - Make Up the Breakdown
McLusky - McLusky Do Dalla
Donnas - Spend The Night
Hot Snakes - Suicide Invoice
Mooney Suzuki - Electric Sweat
Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness
David Cross - Shut Up You Fucking Baby!

The McLusky has actually become since one of my favorite records ever (no hyperbole either).

Records I like
Queens Of The Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf (Interscope)
High On Fire - Surrounded By Thieves (Relapse)
Electric Wizard - Let Us Prey
Sheavy – Synchronized (The Music Cartel)

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 20 January 2014 13:15 (eleven years ago)

I am working my way through some albums I hadn't listened to in ages:

The Party Of Helicopters - Space...And How Sweet It Was (Troubleman Unlimited)
Still as brilliant as I recall it, though the first disc is considerably better than the first.

Ikara Colt - Chat And Business (Epitaph)
This one holds up. I wasn't exposed to Wire back then, a massive oversight that has since been corrected, but this one totally fits in the same way.

Chevelle - Wonder What's Next (Epic)
Hey, gues what? This one holds up far better than I expected! "The Red" still gets me.

Dälek - From Filthy Tongue Of Gods And Griots (Ipecac)
Also as good as I remember it, and a lot noiser. Makes me realize that was what I missed the most about subsequent releases.

High On Fire - Surrounded By Thieves (Relapse)
Still brilliant.

Hatebreed - Perseverance (Universal)
Couldn't make it through the album. What was I thinking?

Death Of Marat - All Eyes Open (Stickfigure)
Not as solid as I remember, which is a shame.

Voted Walkmen, that album is still great!

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 11:18 (eleven years ago)

NERD or Dälek, NERD is probably still the best of the two but this is the 2002 lameover of the album I guess so might just spoil my ballot

wilful brony (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 11:25 (eleven years ago)

The High on Fire record is so good. Thraft of Canaan baby.

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 15:59 (eleven years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.
