I like Beyoncé generally, but this doesn't really do anything. I mean, I like lots of music that doesn't do anything. I like plenty of stuff that doesn't have a hook, or that is mid-tempo and meandering. But not this particular example.

Started to work my way through the top 77 Spotify playlist on Saturday. Highlights so far (of the things I hadn't heard*):

- "Full of Fire": I'm kinda bored with that treated Knife vocal now, but that's more than made up for by what's going on underneath - love the way the backing track constantly evolves as it rattles along, a bit like those old BR trains as they move at speed through different terrains
- Amel Larrieux: quality R&B, impossible to dislike, though not enough here to make me desperate to hear more of her. This >>>>> "Body Party" though.
- Chvrches: not what I was expecting. The surprise kept me interested to the end, but song may not stand up to repeat plays. (This comment sort of fits Tegan and Sara too.)
- "I Blame Myself": a goodie. Will buy the Sky album when it's finally out on CD
- Fantasia: see Amel? No, actually, I will likely check out more from Side Effects of You
- Classixx & Nancy W: not normally into 80s pop revivalism, but this was so well done it won me over.

*skipped the Vampire Weak Hen songs.

I must have listened to "Shabba Ranks" about 100 times since this poll and I only just noticed the bit where they shout "THAT'S THE BRUCE!"

i dunno. i just like it better. sometimes something sticks out and makes you laugh and when you realise you misheard it it's not quite what you thought. still a top track though.

I get new surprises and things I find that catch me off guard almost every day. Just at the moment, I'm digging fka twigs. Also shocked to find a childish gambino track i like!
Because these were put in by order of the nominators, what tends to happen is I hit a run of twelve songs I really don't like, followed by twelve songs that I really do.

that's a six hundred + track playlist at the moment; may well end up with 750 or so from last year that I'll ride for.

I hired another ILXor as an in-"office" assistant two months ago, he's been suffering through this stuff too.

a track I got a little obsessed with off the nom list was "azonto ghost", did you like that one?

that was right at the end of the list! It was solid and made the cut for my faves; I liked that it had some elements of Underworld's 'Ride the Train' in the hook. Really sweet vocals for a club track too. Dunno about "obsessed"; as I say, that one got digested today so I've not had that long to acclimate to it. But it's very nice.

forks what did you make of nhatty man's fim esat, ethio-reggae football tune?

it made my keeper list, though i had to fire it back up to remember it... those killer vocals, autotune and all, brought it right back up to the front of my brain. The production is pretty below average but it's completely redeemed by the ecstatic and frenetic energy from both singers; I wasn't aware this was sports-based, kinda thought it was a gospel track!

almunia - this made my keepers. very *~*~*ThOuGhtFuL GuItaR FaCe*~*~* only downside is that I'm not entirely sure when to deploy; it's too slow for the gym, too corny for the average mix, too bass heavy for relaxation, too varied for dancing, too insistent for background. a surprisingly fast and engaging seven minutes though, to be sure.

zachary cale - this one didn't click. dude's dylan-y voice feels tepid to me and the reverb puts it in a place i have no interest in visiting. guitar idles in first, string(?) refrain is a lil' grating. not for me.

club 8 - 'kill kill kill' did not make the cut; too soporific, plodding and barren. vocals are nice enough but i gotta be a lot more bummed out and beautiful to let this under my skin.

club 8 - 'stop taking my time' DID make the cut; i pretty much always have time for moroder pastiche and the lead vocals slot perfectly here. not exactly the sort of thing i would hunt down but great middle of the set filler while i get a bottle of water

almunia is some of my go-to summer driving music, i recommend finding 'pulsar' and 'new moon' for summery balearic vibes. they've got a bunch of EPs on spotify as well.

driving music sounds just about right; could definitely see that on a subway list

glad you enjoyed it forks! ethiopia came v close to qualifying for the world cup for the first time so there was a lot of interest/pride/enthusiasm in the national side & appetite for jams

I liked that Mafikizolo track a lot; aces jogging music and good for many a mix. I was surprised it was only five minutes, it feels twice as long... and not in a bad way.
