Looking forward to this. The latest Ulver-album, Messe, was quite good, the only thing they've done since their black metal days to really grab me.

Haven't had a chance to listen to this yet, but it is floating around out there now. I did see it tagged as "dark jazz" at one place, but not sure if that helps understand what this will sound like or not.

What I've heard sounds pretty dark jazz. A much more evil sounding Bohren & der Club of Gore. Whose new record is also very good.

As someone who likes O))) more when they draw heavily from La Monte Young than from metal I'm way into this. Almost veers into Tangerine Dream territories at points.

sounds really really good. like monoliths and dimensions with all the backing turned up and the drone guitars just ebbing away at the back. I'm psyched for this now.

I mustve played it 3 or 4 times today. Vinyl goes on pre-order next week. Cant wait to get it and crank it up loud

not sure i'd call what i heard from this album "dark jazz," but "dark jazz" is a great name for a genre.

So its a Bohren album?

its tropes are less obviously 'jazz' than Bohren's are but I would totally recommend this album to someone who liked them

Love this album.

Listened to it this morning - very beautiful, very un-Sunn. First track is like a cross between Miles Davis's "He Loved Him Madly" and Alvin Lucier's Music On A Long Thin Wire.

I have only had a cursory listen so far and am absolutely feeling this, it is totally my shit.

TRIP REPORT Bergtatt was sick; one of the classical guitar interludes really strongly reminded me of a piece by Leo Brouwer, possibly 'Hika' or something from 'El Decamerón Negro'; can't tell whether the noise during the quiet bit of track 3 is footsteps thru icy snow or trolls munching on bones. these dudes are alright in my book

that's the kind of badass metal attitude that wd go well with this fine record

having serious difficulties deciding which track is best. guess the 3rd and final song has the whole SPOILER ALERT garm vox intervention and is beyond gorgeous but the first 2 tracks build up with ferocious intensity, in very different ways (first more jazzy, second more droney). absolutely adore this record

oh and this basically beats 100% of all 'post-rock' ever

Looking forward to hearing this eventually, based on that snippet above. I just became kind of curious about Ulver recently while going through the album poll nominations.

I had a dream that as I listened to this more I hit vocals that sounded kind of like the Moody Blues, with lyrics about economic inequality--but it was really good!

Yeah pretty much where I'm sitting. Hoping it eventually works its way over to some sources here where it'll still technically be an import but I can cut the postage part out at least.

It wound up costing me $34.71 including postage. I thought that was reasonable.

For a Japanese import totally reasonable.

Guys, I've decided this isn't really up to much. Sure, it's Monoliths vs Messe, but I don't think it's anywhere near as exciting as either of those.

My problem is that it feels way too slight at 35 mins. One of the rare records that would benefit from being a lot longer, having a wider canvas to play around on.

I listened to the primary disc this morning on the train, while reading Tony Judt's account of the partitioning of Germany in 1946-47 in Postwar. That combination - reading material and the fact that it's about 15 degrees where I am today - was ideal, I think. Will I listen to this album in the summer? No, but right now it's just about perfect.

I haven't heard Messe but I do agree that this is not as exciting as Monoliths. Considering that's their best record by a large margin and one of my favorite records of the past decade I'm also not sure it's much of a slight.

they should have added the japanese extras onto the disc.

Ok this is still standing up nicely but I do wish it was a bit longer.

Really loving both the Richard Pinhas & Oren Ambarchi - Tikkun and the Oren Ambarchi / Stephen O'Malley / Randall Dunn - Shade Themes From Kairos albums. They won't get as much traction as the main projects, but they'll do for me.
