Most unsuccessful was once in Select-A-Disc where I ended up with a Quickspace single. What sounded like an awesome bass sound on the shop's stereo turned swiftly to fuzz on my crappy outfit.
Best that happened to me - Brian Eno asking what was playing. "Stereolab". "Oh so THATS what they sound like". (Actually Andrew L was the askee but I was there).

One was an Erasure belter, following which i left the shop in self disgust, crying and the other one ended up in me having a row with the guy behind the counter.I insisted that the Velvet Crush album he was playing was Teenage Fanclub.

This is basically how I got into Arabic music: I asked someone in an Arab restaurant where they got their music.
Last I can remember off the top of my head was Cinematic Orchestra's "Motion" at HMV. (In this case the cashiers seemed very approving of my purchase, which is rarely the case these days.)
Of course I do this in clubs occasionally. Sometimes I annoy people by being gringo and not understanding the Spanish names as pronounced without a gringo accent.
