A little over a year ago, I finished polling all of the #1's on Billboard's Alternative Chart (available here) as well as the songs that peaked at #2 (available here). Time to complete the set and go through all of the songs that went to #3.

Without further ado, here are all the songs that peaked at #3 on Billboard's Modern Rock Chart from 2009 until the present:

I abstain because I've never heard of a single one of these songs.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 3 February 2014 15:34 (eleven years ago)

Voting for Cage the Elephant here

Also, it's baffling that "Not Your Fault" peaked higher than "Sail" on this chart

Frontier Psychiatrist, Monday, 3 February 2014 15:38 (eleven years ago)

I have to be honest, that list makes me want to kill myself

DDD, Monday, 3 February 2014 15:39 (eleven years ago)

Young the Giant for me. That song hooked me in to their pretty good first album, still trying to get into the new one.

LimbsKing, Monday, 3 February 2014 15:42 (eleven years ago)

I never saw the Black Keys video until just now.

Hilarious. I was leaning towards it anyway but that clinches it.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Monday, 3 February 2014 15:59 (eleven years ago)

I have not heard any of these songs.

The fixer is great

kornrulez6969, Monday, 3 February 2014 16:11 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, I like that too.

Fixer ftw

Johnny Fever, Monday, 3 February 2014 16:19 (eleven years ago)

Fixer, Black Keys, Cough Syrup well above most everything on this list.

That Keys video is awesome.

Can't believe we went from "Birdhouse In Your Soul" v "Shiny Happy People" v "Valerie Loves Me" vs "The Globe" to this mess.

Then again, I haven't heard any of these songs either, so it's more that I have a hard time believing I'd be interested in 2012 Green Day or 2009 Foo Fighters. But what do I know, if you guys all say this late-model Pearl Jam song is good I'll listen to it.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 3 February 2014 16:26 (eleven years ago)

god i'd forgotten that stupid 'wheels' song. weird despite all the faux indie stuff that crossed over from modern rock to pop you don't really see any evidence of that here, mumfords is the only thing that even feels like a reaction to anything that's happened in the past ten years.

anyway this is 'the fixer' easy.

balls, Monday, 3 February 2014 16:41 (eleven years ago)

hmmm i voted "cough syrup"

dyl, Monday, 3 February 2014 16:46 (eleven years ago)

even i cant rep for any of these

Hungry4Ass, Monday, 3 February 2014 19:42 (eleven years ago)

I loved "Lazy Eye" but didn't care for the other Silversun Pickups and stopped paying attention to them a few years ago. This one any good?

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Monday, 3 February 2014 20:41 (eleven years ago)

I could only get into lazy eye and panic switch. Couldn't find the hook in this one

LimbsKing, Monday, 3 February 2014 20:59 (eleven years ago)

maura otm abt AWOLnation...

re: Silversun Pickups. Am a p rabid fan of Royal We which is up there w Whirring as far as grunge-era throwbacks are concernee (and it shits on Yuck from a great height)...The Pit was kind of an electronic-tinged song wasn't it? Sort of in the same vein as Mouth and Ava Adore. I remember thinking it was garbage upon first listen, but might've changed my mind on it...?

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 9 February 2014 02:14 (eleven years ago)

totally missed this thread, didn't vote, damn

"The Fixer" is definitely my favorite, but "Lifeline" is a close 2nd -- never liked "Last Resort" but Papa Roach weirdly turned around and released a lot of good singles later in their career. "Not Your Fault" is my 3rd favorite of the 3 big AWOLNATION singles, but it's still pretty great. "The Pit" is the only Silversun Pickups song i like. and "Adolescents" and "Oh Love" are good.

that Cage The Elephant song is fucking awful. maybe the chorus "ain't no rest for the wicked/ money don't grow on trees/ I got bills to pay, I got mouths to feed" is meant to be a self-aware vomit of cliches but it's probably just lazy writing? it's pretty impressive to be the worst song in a lineup that includes exceptionally bad 311 and Black Keys songs.

scott c-word (some dude), Sunday, 9 February 2014 11:55 (eleven years ago)

I do wonder about Cage the Elephant's self-awareness. Their newer stuff is so much different than this schlock.

LimbsKing, Sunday, 9 February 2014 13:02 (eleven years ago)

Aww, I actually love all three of the big mod-rock hits from CTE's first album.

worst of the ones I've listened to from this poll is easily "21 Guns" imo, though that may change upon listening to that 311 song
