Because, apparently, one in three households ("British Families") in the UK, do.

How many of those are the same people who own it more than once though? (cassette, vinyl, CD, deluxe 2CD edition, remastered CD edition, etc etc etc)

This was probably my favourite ever album when I was about seven so I still have a soft spot for it. My parents definitely had a copy but I don't think there's one in my house

groovypanda, Tuesday, 11 February 2014 09:14 (eleven years ago)

I remember reading a Neil Gaiman book in my teens that suggests if you leave a cassette in a car for longer than a couple of weeks it turns into Queen's Greatest Hits

Over six million copies in the UK. Here's what my wife wrote about the album some while back: http://nobilliards.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/queen-greatest-hits.html

Queen - Greatest Hits (1981) - i have this, it's horrible
Abba - Gold (1992) - haven't heard, some of the singles were alright though?
Beatles - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) - haven't heard
Adele - 21 (2011) - nope
Oasis - What's The Story Morning Glory (1995) - lol, gtfo

Queen - Greatest Hits (1981) - I have this, it's good (I also have Volume II)
Abba - Gold (1992) - I have this; classic
Beatles - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) - who?
Adele - 21 (2011) - no thanks
Oasis - What's The Story Morning Glory (1995) - I own the 3 CD singles from this, but not the album

I remember seeing a billboard for Queen's 'Greatest Hits Volume III', onto which someone had sprayed the words 'BETTER MUSIC IS AVAILABLE'.

And when you f--- up, you go backwards (snoball), Tuesday, 11 February 2014 10:40 (eleven years ago)

Queen - Greatest Hits (1981) - classic, particularly as musical rite of passage.
Abba - Gold (1992) - pretty great.
Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) - perhaps not their best, but very fond of it.
Adele - 21 (2011) - worthwhile, but I think her voice saves average arrangements sometimes.
Oasis - What's The Story Morning Glory (1995) - I prefer their first one, but whatever.

sadly, I don't own Queen's Greatest Hits, but I might pick up a cheapo copy on vinyl, it'd be fun to have.

Nope, but it was around in the house when I was growing up. We also had the 'Box of Flicks' double VHS. I still maintain a soft spot for Queen, or at least when they're playing up their ridiculousness, there are several songs which are disappointingly dull.

I used to have this, as well as Volume II, as a kid, but they were lost at some point, and I've never replaced them. Since I got them in the CD era, I remember it used to confuse me why most of the biggest hits (and most of the best songs) were on Vol. II instead of Vol. I. It was only much later that I found out Vol. I had originally come out in 1981.

Greatest Hits II on cassette was the second album I ever owned (after Divine Madness) but I've never owned the first volume (my brother bought it so I never felt the need).

Used to have ABBA Gold on tape as well; now I've just got about three quarters of it on iTunes. Have bought Sgt. Pepper twice, never heard the Adele album and I think I've still got the CD of What's the Story in a drawer somewhere.

Or rather "Queen (TM)." Yes to the last two songs but I'd have used the rest of the CD for "best of the rest" purposes, e.g. Tie Your Mother Down, Death On Two Legs, Body Language, Keep Yourself Alive etc.

I got this on cassette for Christmas in 1991 (just like everyone else in my class) when I was eight. It was the first album I ever owned. Recently bought a vinyl copy for £1 just for the nostalgia value.

I am always bewildered by Queen, I'm only in my 20s so they've always been a historical band anyway but everything they seem to have done that's impacted on public consciousness feels like a novelty song to my ears.

I generally find Bill Wyman (the critic) to be hit-or-miss, but this is a pretty good piece from 1992 on Queen and the awful "Concert For Life": http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/freddies-dead-thats-all-they-said-a-debacle-on-mtv/Content?oid=879686

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 11 February 2014 21:12 (eleven years ago)

Wasn't sure he meant Bowie was artistically barren in '92 or always was:

the artistically barren Bowie, at heart a calculating publicity hound, has based his career on chameleonlike image changes.

wyman is a pretty harsh, borderline-challopsy critic a lot of the time -- i recall him reviewing the guralnick biography of elvis and saying something along the lines of it was ridiculous to devote so many pages to someone who hadn't recorded more than 20 minutes of worthwhile music in his career.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 11 February 2014 21:43 (eleven years ago)

Mostly talking about the English there, though as ALS says, there are probably some South American countries where it applies too.

That piece Wyman wrote reviewing Keith Richards' autobiography as Mick Jagger was pretty funny and well done.

When that record came out, I was at college and it was one of the singles in the jukebox in the cafeteria. There was this young guy who used to sweep the floor, collect up the plates, etc.. Very quiet, didn't say much. One time 'Driven By You' came on the jukebox, and he freaked the fuck out, jumping around, playing air guitar, everything. I was sitting with some friends right opposite and we spent the entire length of the song trying to avoid eye contact with him, each other, anyone else in the place. People sitting at the other tables moved the fuck out of the way and were all backed up around the walls while this guy jumped around the place. Then the song finished and he picked up his broom and went back to sweeping the floor like nothing happened.

And when you f--- up, you go backwards (snoball), Wednesday, 12 February 2014 09:51 (eleven years ago)

At one point I think he actually slid across the floor on his knees.

I may have owned this as a CD-single, purchased dutifully in a still-mourning-freddie daze. It was about the time I was transitioning from classic-rock indoctrinated tween to hardcore/thrash/grunge/hip-hop curious teen. I don't think I played it very often, or even thought it was very good while I was purchasing it.

would showtune pap be more on point?

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 12 February 2014 11:27 (eleven years ago)

One of the first 3 albums I bought. Liking Queen was p. much obligatory in the months after Freddie's death when I was 11-12. Later I found them uncool and embarrassing. I suppose it would be a bit of both if I listened to this now - some fairly undeniable tracks, some I never want to hear again.

(Think I might like the opposite Queen tracks to emil.y; I have fond memories of some of the not-so-talked-about tracks and can't really deal with some of the ridiculousness or the token genre excursions)

So yeah, I had a copy of this and probably still do, though I might have left it at my parents' house. Had Greatest Hits II as well but I think I got rid of that.

I had a kind of love/hate thing with Abba circa their 90s revival so I don't have Abba Gold but I'm pretty sure I like nearly all the songs on it and should probably just get over myself. (Not seen it in a charity shop, strangely enough.)

(Presumably not including Queen's own comps)

Mark G, Wednesday, 12 February 2014 17:23 (eleven years ago)

Noh. Never had a copy but have heard it often enough through other people's collections. When the stats came out the other day it said most copies were bought on vinyl, and considering it's available on vinyl in every charity shop I've been in, I believe there's a big difference between sales and actual ownership of the album.
