Benny More, el Barbaro del Ritmo!

When we did the 1950s poll, my Benny More nomination inspired some interest, but if I remember correctly, this particular song wasn't on youtube (or otherwise easily streamable) at the time. This music comes wrapped in some very old conventions, but when the chorus swells and Benny More's lead vocals weave in and out, it is pretty undeniable. (Also love his imitation Mexican singer laugh, here.) Do listen to this:

He was an absolute giant. It would be hard to exaggerate how universally he is admired by soneros within son, salsa, and timba.

I have been a little remiss not taking advantage of what's now easily available of his work on Spotify, although I'll admit the 1940s harmonies can he a challenge to cut through at times.

This is another one of his most obviously famous songs, showing off his bolerista side:

This duet with Mexico's Pedro Vargas is the Benny More song a couple people were particularly interested in during the 1950s poll:

This is one of our favorite records at our house!! Amazing voice! In San Antonio at a junk shop I found a 3 lp greatest hits of More, but sadly the records were too trashed to be hopeful about.

Did you have any idea who he was when you bought it? Just curious, because it would be interesting to bring something like that without knowing you are getting.

Some of the album covers for his compilations are a bit unfortunate.

I would buy any record with a cover like that, but It's actually my wife's record. She grew up listening to him and always sings his songs to August.

Didn't realize this was a new thread. Yes, he was a giant.

I did a search first because I wasn't sure I hadn't already started a thread devoted to him. It took me a while to enjoy his music, and I still haven't dug into it as much as I could. I think you are probably more familiar. Hopefully you will have more to say.
