this might have come up elsewhere, but i figured why not have a thread for it. because it's worth it.
i haven't heard a Mary J song since "Mr Wrong", which I really liked, but this is p next level. #1 in the UK, i hear?

Their poppiness is just too unbearable for me.

periodic reminder that the worst sort of dance music purist strawman actually exists
if anything it's not poppy enough
― lex pretend, Monday, 17 February 2014 23:58 (eleven years ago)
naw, it's just right

I don't really get when "poppy" is lobbed at dance music. Like, what's the non-poppy version of something like this? Like, would you rather we dance to Autechre or something?
I'm not really articulating this really well, but isn't the point of music that's going to get people out on the dancefloor to be poppy?
― Murgatroid, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 00:17 (eleven years ago)
ehhh, I don't quite agree with that. There's room for it all.
― imago draggin' (The Reverend), Tuesday, 18 February 2014 00:30 (eleven years ago)
Yeah, of course, but I just find it especially specious to criticize something in the dance music realm as being "poppy" is all.

Youtube screencap for this keeps on making me think of Get Lucky

I LOVE poppy dance music. I love Need U 100%, Flowers, etc. Disclosure just sound self-consciously poppy or contrived to me, that's all.
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 18 February 2014 01:53 (eleven years ago)
this is a little bit better than the original version, which means it is really good.
― Dominique, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 03:36 (eleven years ago)
Durr do you really mean that they sound like they're fetishising an idea of poppy dance music rather than just being pop?
Not that I really agree (or rather, if this is correct it's not a probelm for me) but otherwise I don't get yr distinction here.

I love that they have Mary J. Blige as a collaborator on this one. The other Disclosure songs I had heard before didn't do anything for me (with the exception of Latch) but this is really good on first listen.

A peak of 20, in fact. "White Noise" came closest and reached 2.

two dance musics: the poppy kind, and autechre
Yeah, I knew someone would bring that up. Kinda dumb thing to say, I admit but previous point remains that using "poppy" as a pejorative against a dance music act makes little sense.
― Murgatroid, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 15:37 (eleven years ago)
why
― just sayin, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 15:41 (eleven years ago)
No Tim, it's not like that. To put it simply, the saccharine is too strong. It's like they went into the studio thinking, "OK, we're going to create some radio hits here. Make sure to come up with, ahem, cheap hooks that will attract the average crowd."
