because one album often wasn't good enough, and a box set was an investment of time and money i wasn't ready to make.

i had no idea until many years after i bought this two-album set that the second album was odessey and oracle in its entirety. but this is where i fell in love with all those songs:

Don't think anyone else will suggest this:
http://www.recordsale.de/cdpix/c/cream-heavy_cream%281%29.jpg
One of the first, I don't know, 50 albums I bought when I was in high school in the mid-'70s (Weird Scenes, too--that was one of the first dozen). I used to look at those Columbia Record House ads and pick out all the double-compilations I wanted to buy, dreaming at the same time of the Marantz stereo I wanted to play them on. There were also double-albums for each guy in Cream; a few years later I bought the Clapton, at which point the other two were probably out of print. What would a double Ginger Baker compilation be like? Literally no idea.

re: Chuck Berry, Great Twenty-Eight is absolutely the canon, but these make kind of an amazing/ridiculous slab in the record collection - Golden Decade volume 1, 2, and 3, with the later volumes increasingly strewn with non-hit B-sides and album material which really fleshes out these other sides of Chuck than the ones I grew up on. Pretty cool. (There's a better cover for #1, but this is the one I've got...)

this album by THEM FEATURING VAN MORRISON, LEAD SINGER has the killer comination of totally slapped-together cover art (kind of a hallmark of the double greatest hits album sleazy cash-in aura) and amazing long and detailed Lester Bangs liner notes

that could be a whole 'nother thread: the hastily thrown together, crappily packaged, four-LP greatest-hits set from before the boxed set era, which often, as is definitely the case with that elvis set, is absolutely fantastic. though there are probably not nearly as many of those.

Fucking great, although with only five cuts per side it's a little skimpy.
One that's everywhere and kind of weird is Dylan's second GH, with maybe...three? hits, one new single, five previously unreleased tracks, and a bunch of album cuts (though I assume some of these had gotten radio play?). The title and the photo (evoking the previous Greatest Hits) are all that separate it from being more of a Yesterday and Today or Hey Jude comp.
