He'll have been 17 when Freak Show was released, but I'd like to put forward the opinion that lyrics on subsequent albums were no less awful, just in a different way.

I live in a cemetery/full of good will and integrity/you see, I have no specialty

this one fails in a unique way because it's trying to exact some kind of abstract poetic landmark without having the faintest sense of what it's trying to say.

"hating you should be introduced as a new law"
He missed rhyming hate with legislate, but this is still less ridiculous than gnr lyrics

Voted "Your life's an open cold sore/better get out the cream" because it could plausibly have been an Anal Cunt song title.

No more maybe's, your baby's got rabies/sitting on a ball in the middle of the Andes

^^^ i think i have it down to these but i'm lolling too hard to really choose. Also, I'm assuming "come and join the mass debate" is a "masturbate" joke which makes it weirdly kind of defensible, like at least i understand the impulse that produced it - ditto the really dopey angst rhymes in a way. It's when he's really trying to land a clever conceit that it really becomes special.

pato take sides: wangaratta vs. newcastle

mookieproof, Friday, 21 February 2014 01:59 (eleven years ago)

Newcastle has a great impoverished arts scene, some live venues, and a decent art gallery. And the foreshore reclamation is pretty stunningly effective. Wangaratta has a funnier name, though.

I got the Poison, I got the Rammellzee (sic), Friday, 21 February 2014 03:08 (eleven years ago)

These are amazing! I'm gonna have to check out silverchair! Shame and blame made me lol, but Drained as drained can be, life is gone from me/Drained if drained is free, if only I could breathe made me looooool

Karl Malone, Friday, 21 February 2014 03:12 (eleven years ago)

early Silverchair was kinda like "yeah ok nothing special but they're kids and they ripoff cool bands" then they decided what their fans REALLY wanted were a bunch of pencil-dicked freshman English poetry set to plodding guitar clean strumming and a string orchestra.

Neanderthal, Friday, 21 February 2014 03:13 (eleven years ago)

i'm going to Newcastle in March for the first time in about 15 years see QOTSA and NIN.

charlie h, Friday, 21 February 2014 03:14 (eleven years ago)

i actually remember that Learn to Hate song quite well. it's ghastly. apes the screamier parts of grunge in the worst way possible.

charlie h, Friday, 21 February 2014 04:00 (eleven years ago)

they didn't even try to pull the wool over your eyes as to where they got "Abuse Me" from

Neanderthal, Friday, 21 February 2014 04:07 (eleven years ago)

I do remember Israel's Son being a jam, but that was from Frogstomp right?

Neanderthal, Friday, 21 February 2014 04:08 (eleven years ago)

it had a big riff in it. at least it sounded big to my 15-year-old ears; haven't heard it since.

charlie h, Friday, 21 February 2014 04:22 (eleven years ago)

they didn't even try to pull the wool over your eyes as to where they got "Abuse Me" from

― Neanderthal, Friday, February 21, 2014 4:07 AM (6 hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Yeah, the influences on the first two Silverchair albums are blindingly obvious, especially on this album. Part of the vocal melody of 'Slave' is clearly 'Holy Water' by Soundgarden, and 'Lie To Me' is basically their take on 'tourette's'

Newcastle, easily.

wow such doge of venice (King Boy Pato), Friday, 21 February 2014 11:49 (eleven years ago)

FYI

Historically, there was disagreement about whether the first syllable should be pronounced "Wong" or "Wang". The "Wong" pronunciation was never used by a majority of the population, and never received any wide currency outside the district. It was officially disavowed by the Wangaratta City Council 's declaration in favour of the "Wang" pronunciation in the 1980s.

Sandy, Saturday, 22 February 2014 04:11 (eleven years ago)

this is weird, the only version of the 'tomorrow' video i can find on youtube is the pre-Frogstomp "Australian" version, with a considerably less slick recording of the song. Kind of cute in the blatancy of the middle-school Cobain cosplay.

Forgot how cheap and shitty the "Abuse Me" video was - Epic must have gotten skittish after "Freak" flopped I guess.
