running one of these is also one of the best and most fun ways ever to get evicted. which has happened to me twice.

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Thursday, 13 March 2014 00:03 (eleven years ago)

we were lucky enough to own the place. in the seven years that we did straight up crazy insane multi-band punk shows, the cops came exactly once... to warn us that they would have to ask us to stop if they got noise complaints.

partly luck, partly supportive/mellow neighbors. the cops also once stormed the house and almost shot one of my roommates in a separate incident, so it's not like they held us in high regard.

Swiss House

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 13 March 2014 00:17 (eleven years ago)

yeah, i lived at several of these throughout the years and surprisingly the cops didn't seem to care too much. even the neighbors were supportive of shows earlier in the day

one of these was called the golden trapperkeeper lodge, which was and continues to be a dumb name. the other was just called buchon house, though eventually the house's second story loft became the real epicenter, resulting in self-identified "loft kids" and shows at "the loft". several of these people have tattoos of my old roommate's face w/batwings now for some reason

Seven year run for a punk house is crazy

gimme the lute (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 13 March 2014 00:18 (eleven years ago)

well we had a no alcohol policy that was reluctantly enforced, that helped

also we were lucky, it was such a cool thing... other people did most of the booking work, I was just the guy who lived there who walked around the yard telling kids to take their brownbagged 40's down to the park if they wanted to drink.

about a month after my wife and I met (8 years ago), we picked up her (ex) stepdaughter for Thanksgiving and my first thought was OMG this kid is a total punk. when we stopped at my house she looked around w/a confused expression and said "wasn't there a house around here that used to have punk shows?" we were like the constant for almost a half generation.

it was also cool b/c parents would come over and check in with us... I owned the place with a good female friend and after we explained that we didn't allow drinking at the venue the parents were always so relieved and happy.

fave shows: Submission Hold, Iowaska (*ex-Amebix), the lovely Minneapolis band FAGGOT who I bet y'all know, Tragedy, 3 Inches Of Blood, usaisamonster, MDC, too many to remember

once our neighbors came home and there were four very confused punk kids sitting in their basement. the punk kids looked at the couple and said "is there a show here tonight?", man we were lucky that couple had a sense of humor.

one of these was called the golden trapperkeeper lodge, which was and continues to be a dumb name.

hahahah I played there a couple times
there was also a party there where people kept falling down a long flight of stairs and the cops came, and I was only there to hang with a friend who lived there who had (unbeknownst to me) gotten arrested earlier that evening for graffiti and was in custody

sarahell, Thursday, 13 March 2014 04:32 (eleven years ago)

mortville, which was around for a long time and shut down as part of chicago's crackdown on punk houses in the lead-up to the 2012 nato summit

Superhappy Funland in Houston, TX. Probably the most amazing and expansive punk/art space I've ever seen.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 13 March 2014 16:24 (eleven years ago)

Glad to see the Pud House get a mention! Wish I had made it to Fort Thunder at some point, but certainly a huge hub of weird/wonderful for its run.

7 years is a REALLY long time for a punk/illegal space to last. Kinda wish I had instilled a no alcohol policy when I helmed one of these things, but I guess some of the "good" may have gone away along with the "bad" that might have been avoided. Good idea for a thread, so many of these places provide such a crucial service to any given town.

grandavis, Thursday, 13 March 2014 16:51 (eleven years ago)

Pud House was actually started by the USAisaMonster dudes mentioned upthread, the band formed there before becoming citizens of the universe. Such a great live band when they hit their peak.

Yes, H4A I've seen them. Fine w me, since when they moved Lenny's there it felt like a sports bar and I never liked it much.

Crazy thing about the Neutron Bomb is years later I learned it was started & run pretty much entirely by Knife (of Knife and the Stabs) when he was like 17 or something.

Couch Couch, in East Atlanta, was cool. They had these big cutouts of Christmas nativity stuck up on the wall. I play shows with several bands there and premiered a night of 3D experimental video.

Ray Capo's Cantina and The Cool Ranch were two great ones in New Brunswick. Also The Mold Hole, mainly because it was literally a moldy closet.

Albuquerque had remarkable name/vibe synchronicity. Cunt Castle, Glitter Factory, Cowabungalow, Outer Space, Exxon Valdez, The Wolf Shack; each hosted the kind of shows you'd expect by the name (well maybe Exxon Valdez is a stretch, but uhh, figure lots of noiserock).
