Voted "Maps"

, Thursday, 13 March 2014 02:11 (eleven years ago)

lol, i almost did that album instead. trying not to vote for a single here but is hard not to.

Bee OK, Thursday, 13 March 2014 02:14 (eleven years ago)

it's zero, zero was basically the best song of 2009

call all destroyer, Thursday, 13 March 2014 02:17 (eleven years ago)

prefer "Off With Your Head," now an eternal karaoke jam, but "Dull Life" and "Zero" and "Little Shadow" rule. Their best album.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 13 March 2014 03:05 (eleven years ago)

er "Heads Will Roll"

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 13 March 2014 03:05 (eleven years ago)

always loves this which was somehow left off the album proper and only released on the Japanese edition

piscesx, Thursday, 13 March 2014 03:12 (eleven years ago)

Maps isn't even their best lovesong, geez

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Thursday, 13 March 2014 03:17 (eleven years ago)

I don't even need to think about this one: 'Dragon Queen'.

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Thursday, 13 March 2014 03:19 (eleven years ago)

And to date, this is pretty much the only album of theirs I care about. Their last one was just the pits.

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Thursday, 13 March 2014 03:20 (eleven years ago)

"Heads Will Roll", but I have a soft spot for "Hysteric", "Dull Life", "Soft Shock", and basically most of the record.

As others have mentioned, it was dismaying to see how much of a backward step their last LP was.

Hysteric!

Frederik B, Thursday, 13 March 2014 08:29 (eleven years ago)

Hysteric but there's loads of contenders. Whole album packs such an emotional punch and the production is so great.

Matt DC, Thursday, 13 March 2014 08:43 (eleven years ago)

"Zero" was a startling righteous stadium anthem at FYF last year. Have to think about this.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 13 March 2014 08:55 (eleven years ago)

it's zero, zero was basically the best song of 2009

This, but could easily be Heads Will Roll, Hysteric or Little Shadow. Or anything except Shame and Fortune really. Love this album.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Thursday, 13 March 2014 09:03 (eleven years ago)

i was unimpressed with "zero" when it trailed the album and remain so, it's like a clumsier "heads will roll" that doesn't quite soar in the same way

"hysteric" is the equiv of "maps", the decent but overrated ballad because you're all horribly sentimental. fuck yo feelings give me fierceness so i'll go with "dull life" with "heads will roll" and "dragon queen" close behind

lex pretend, Thursday, 13 March 2014 11:01 (eleven years ago)

re: the debut, i still have no idea how/why anyone prefers "maps" to the incredible "date with the night"

the ballads are best on their second album tho!

lex pretend, Thursday, 13 March 2014 11:02 (eleven years ago)

^^^ Ballad hater.

Matt DC, Thursday, 13 March 2014 11:32 (eleven years ago)

Zero > Heads Will Roll is an incredible opening pair, Zero throws you up in the air then Heads Will Roll pitches you into the distance. I can't imagine not loving both of them.

Matt DC, Thursday, 13 March 2014 11:33 (eleven years ago)

i have always started the album at "heads will roll" after the first couple of listens

lex pretend, Thursday, 13 March 2014 11:41 (eleven years ago)

^^^ same

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 13 March 2014 11:43 (eleven years ago)

I hate the high-sheen shouty brashness of both those opening songs, makes me think of Republica or Transvision Vamp. I'm cool with it from that point on though. Voted Hysteric.

eardrum buzz aldrin (NickB), Thursday, 13 March 2014 11:52 (eleven years ago)

i was unimpressed with "zero" when it trailed the album and remain so, it's like a clumsier "heads will roll" that doesn't quite soar in the same way

Heh, this is the exact opposite of how I feel about these two songs. I wasn't a fan of YYYs (bar a couple of songs) when 'Zero' came out and was surprised how much I liked it.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 13 March 2014 11:58 (eleven years ago)

while the last album is getting a bit of a bashing, i gotta stick up for this which is a lovely thing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CFsLb8ZBD0

piscesx, Thursday, 13 March 2014 12:04 (eleven years ago)

This is a fantastically well-sequenced album. The opening one-two is really strong, but I think the last couple of songs are equally well put together. 'Hysteric'/'Little Shadow' are great examples of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' softer side. Voted 'Hysteric'.

(rogue apostrophe in the thread title is driving me nuts btw)

bizarro gazzara, Thursday, 13 March 2014 13:02 (eleven years ago)

The last album sucked. Sorry but it did. I was so sad about that too because they're probably my favorite current band. I'm just gonna pretend that last one never happened and focus on how awesome It's Blitz was.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 13 March 2014 15:01 (eleven years ago)

love love love this album!

(•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 13 March 2014 15:03 (eleven years ago)

Soft Shock for me but this is nice overall, I actually hate the production it makes everything sound thin and sharp.

Moka, Thursday, 13 March 2014 21:17 (eleven years ago)

Soft Shock for me but this is nice overall, I actually hate the production it makes everything sound thin and sharp.

That second verse on Zero would sound awesome with a more booming sound.

Moka, Thursday, 13 March 2014 21:18 (eleven years ago)

I treat this album like a compilation of three separate EPs and the second ("Dull Life", "Shame and Fortune", "Runaway") is my favorite. I've probably played those three songs (and "Dragon Queen") more than the rest of the album combined.

Wahaca Flocka Flame (DJP), Thursday, 13 March 2014 21:39 (eleven years ago)

I'm going with Soft Shock. Little Shadow would be my second choice but this album really is great all the way through. By far my favourite album of theirs.

Agree that it was sad how much the last album sucked. They got better with each album up until that one.

Listened to this a while back ago, and really appreciated the mastering on this, didn't feel like it was trying to blast my ears off by compression. Although, I feel Zero could have benefited from a bit more "loudness".

aguzman1990, Thursday, 7 March 2019 01:35 (six years ago)

Zero has such a great video. I never get tired of this song.

It's great how everyone still loves this, in contrast to the "hey, remember when? LOL" reaction to "Merriweather Post Pavillion"'s tenth birthday in January.

kinder, Thursday, 7 March 2019 18:33 (six years ago)

yeah this is straight-up classic, even the ones that got no votes in this poll are very solid. i have a weak spot for hysteric, especially the drop-dead gorgeous acoustic version.
