Please help. If I can attach a CD burner to my boom-box, I could join the mix CD swap.

If your boom-box has an aux out it wouldn't be a problem.

Can you hook it to a tape deck?

dan (dan), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It's got a built in tape recorder. Never tried hooking it to a a tape deck. I'm pretty sure it has an aux out, so I think I'm in business.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 23:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Once I get a burner, which should be soon, then.

RS, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

?
if your CD burner can do Realtime burns from an audio feed....

dsico (dsico), Thursday, 17 October 2002 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that unusual? Or is there no such thing? I don't really know anything about CD burners.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 17 October 2002 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you've got to have a 'puter with it. A lot of the burning process is done in software. There are standalone burners (that look like a cd player with two trays. There are .mp3 players that have audio-in.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 18 October 2002 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

You have to put it on a computer first (audio in?), and then burn a CD using the computer.

Am I going to have to install some sort of card into my PC for this? (I just put in an ethernet card for DSL and getting my PC case back together was a challenge, for me.)

Are there stand-alone burners which don't require any computer involvement?

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 1 February 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to make mixes for y'all. It adds to my enjoyment if I can spread the music around. I'd like to get somethings inexpensive, but I'd also like to get something that won't be much bother. Is it possible to have both? I'm willing to pay a bit more to avoid bother.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 1 February 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Helping me figure out how to hook this up will hasten the creation of my mix CDs, so there may be something in it for some of you.

Is it hard to do fade-outs?

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 1 February 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

There are stand-alone burners which require no computer involvement. I have one. It uses "MUSIC" CDs which cost a bit more than computer CDs. I think they're trying to phase them out, but they WERE getting quite inexpensive (that's probably why they're phasing them out, the fuckers). I'm quite pleased with mine, I've had only three discs refuse-to-cooperate.

matt riedl (veal), Saturday, 1 February 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you think it will become difficult to find blank "MUSIC" only CDs to use in them after a while?

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 1 February 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

If I get a stand-alone burner, one that does not connect to my PC, what can I do if I want to burn MP3s to disc? If I want to be able to do that, is it better for me to just get one that connects to my PC?

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"Do you think it will become difficult to find blank "MUSIC" only CDs to use in them after a while?" Yes, I do.
"If I get a stand-alone burner, one that does not connect to my PC, what can I do if I want to burn MP3s to disc? If I want to be able to do that, is it better for me to just get one that connects to my PC?"
Yes, it is, but remember, many CD players don't play mp3 discs.

matt riedl (veal), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

matt, Thanks, I'm very naive about this stuff.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Good Luck Rockist.

matt riedl (veal), Thursday, 6 February 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure whatever I finally purchase will be the wrong thing.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 6 February 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I have since bought and returned two burners, because, in simple terms, I couldn't figure out get them to work with my PC. I'm going to buy a stand-alone (as long as it will use CD-Rs), I think, but the store where I plan on getting one is currently out of stock.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Okay, all you ILM cockfarmers, I have a (stand-alone) burner now. Hopefully it will work. I have four ideas for Latin mix CDs, but I'm not sure if I want to post them for all the avenging furies of the music industry to see.

A Music Consumer, Monday, 3 March 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't realize how big this was going to be. I don't know where I'm going to put this.

A Music Consumer, Monday, 3 March 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh! I misunderstood what one of the store workers said and thought this would take ANY CDRs. I don't want something that's only going to take audio CDRs. So I guess I am without a way to make mixes, unless a buy a component stereo, I can't even tape from CDs, because my boom-box's tape recorder has been crap from the start; or buy an updated PC; or pay someone to add a new CD Reader/Writer to my PC (which I don't really feel like doing).

A Music Consumer, Monday, 3 March 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

rockist,
adding a reader/writer isn't difficult! i did it and i'm useless. have you got a space for a spare drive? if not just take out the old one and put the new one in, same connections. software will come with it.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 3 March 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

gaz, But it came with some ribbon-like cord, and the directions talked about lots of incomprehensible things. It didn't sound as simple as you are describing it. I didn't want to take the old drive out and then not know what I was doing. (I don't have a space for a spare drive.)

A Music Consumer, Monday, 3 March 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, it's really easy:

1) Open up the computer.
2) Note the way the old CD drive is connected.
3) Disconnect the old CD drive.
4) Remove old CD drive from computer.
5) Put CD/RW drive in computer.
6) Connect CD/RW drive to old CD drive connections.
7) Close computer.
8) If prompted, run the software that came with the CD/RW and follow the defaults.

If that doesn't work, I will eat a large tub of ice cream. (Yes I am hedging my bet.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 March 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

AMC/RS, I had the same problem a few months back. you just need to start buying Music CDs that are labeled clearly as such and avoid all else. sucks, but that's life

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 3 March 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

what dan said ie i think you'll find theres a similar ribbon like cord on your existing drive. you just unplug one, plug the other in. you might not have to even use the new chord if you're just replacing the drive...there'll be one in there already! isn't there a step-by-step guide with the parts numbered in a diagram?

i'd come and do it but i'm thousands of miles away...

gaz (gaz), Monday, 3 March 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

& then you burn 4 latin cds, put them in a mail bag, and send them to me...

gaz (gaz), Monday, 3 March 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe I'll just take the case off my PC tomorrow and see what it looks like. I did manage to put in an ethernet card, which was not complicated at all.

(M Matos, I already took the burner back, which I somehow neglected to mention in my 3rd post today.)

A Music Consumer, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I had the same trouble a few months ago. I was replacing CD-rom with Cd-rw. I did what Dan said, but it was a pain in the ass in some ways. The way everything was packed into my PC case made the transfer physically tricky because their wasn't much room to manoeuvre, and the new drive didn't end up very professionally fitted (it's kind of half balanced on my hard drive). But the actual connection of cables was quite easy because I did as Dan said and reconnected the old ones.
