that song is good as well. each album has been better then their previous, hope that streak continues.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 01:32 (eleven years ago)

This has been leaked. Their first album which has not been a radical shift from the previous one, but I like it more than Skying. Their songwriting improved a lot, and So Now You Know is their first perfect pop song.

This is great and is tons better than Skying. Production is really beautiful and lots of great early Simple Minds influences.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 26 March 2014 22:03 (eleven years ago)

love this. more mellow and less overproduced than skying.

calstars, Friday, 28 March 2014 01:11 (eleven years ago)

i think "So Now You Know" might be the best song to date. looking forward to hearing this.

Bee OK, Saturday, 29 March 2014 01:12 (eleven years ago)

i liked Skying so much (especially You Said) that i'm almost nervous of listening to this in case it sucks. man i fuckin love this crazy band.

piscesx, Saturday, 29 March 2014 01:46 (eleven years ago)

I feel like they've become a fairly middling indie band with the occasional catchy song. I picture this CD sitting on well appointed shelves alongside Elbow and Doves albums, with the owner waiting to get it out at his next dinner party with the obligatory disclaimer: "you know, these chaps aren't as bad as you think." Not terrible by any means, but I can't help feeling that Primary Colours suggested they were capable of a bit more than this.

Are we still doing dinner party references in 2014?

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Saturday, 29 March 2014 15:04 (eleven years ago)

Who the fuck plays Doves at a dinner party? I play Polar Bear and Eno and William Basinski.

No mention was made of playing Doves at a dinner party.

I know what you mean. They've gone in a much more safe direction than I thought they would but I think it's a really enjoyable album. The production throughout is just brilliant. I'm sure I read when they were recording this album they were influenced by Hawkwind, so it's the not the album I was expecting from them at this point. Still can't believe what a good band they've become.

Still like a lot of Doves songs (Some Cities and Lost Souls are really strong albums) Used to love Elbow but One Day at a Time really put me off them and haven't liked anything they've done since. I could probably make a great playlist of their stuff (the singles from Asleep in the Back, Switching Off, Fallen Angel and most of Leaders of the Free World)

one month passes...

this is pretty good! man these guys looked like such dipshits when they came out back in the day i never gave em a chance, and the band name is so dumb
but i ended up really loving skying and this seems cool so far

the doves are awesome, but i dunno i'm american so i don't really have any idea of like what type of person would have doves or elbow CDs, or play them at dinner parties etc

Less moody and more MOR than Skying is my initial impression.

It all kind of sounds like the song. In a good way, but still.

hmm, i have never seen them. are they any good live? really thinking about checking them out when they come to the Los Angeles area in October.

Bee OK, Saturday, 31 May 2014 02:10 (eleven years ago)

All I hear when I listen to this band is simple minds. I can't help it

now I'm the grandfather (dog latin), Saturday, 31 May 2014 02:13 (eleven years ago)

okay, so this album is sort of really boring but i keep putting it on. it's just this grey paste of Simple Minds, MBV, U2 and Primal Scream that just works quite well if you're pottering about and not really paying it much mind.

now I'm the grandfather (dog latin), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 23:33 (eleven years ago)

i don't find myself going to this album much either but at least you play it. still think i'm going to see them however.

i did see Simple Minds in concert, never got into them or own any of their albums. don't see that comparison but i'm uneducated.

Bee OK, Thursday, 5 June 2014 01:39 (eleven years ago)

two weeks pass...

This album grew on me a lot these last few weeks. It takes a fair few listens for the songs to peer out the gloom but once they do, they're very obviously there.

Decided to try out the first album and I'm amazed at how different they were back then. It's an alright record actually - better than a lot of the shite that was getting touted in the UK indie press at the time, sort of in between the Cardiacs and Magazine.

Their best album.

Wrong again.

Yes, you are!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 2 August 2018 22:02 (seven years ago)

Their debut remains their weakest album, but every album of they put was better than their last up until the most recent one, which I'd still rank miles above the debut. This, though - yep, this is "the one"

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 2 August 2018 22:05 (seven years ago)

Great hair

eris (Ross), Thursday, 2 August 2018 22:19 (seven years ago)

I'm unsure about better, but I liked the Cat's Eyes stuff a lot!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 2 August 2018 22:36 (seven years ago)

good to hear! underrated band

eris (Ross), Thursday, 2 August 2018 22:38 (seven years ago)

The thing about this band is they could so easily have been the kind of band that could have ended up on the landfill, but they've managed to carve out a decent career for themselves and have tried to push themselves. They seem a decent bunch of guys, too.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 2 August 2018 22:56 (seven years ago)

dude works hard to in horrors and cats eyes..apparently barely sleeps, solid work ethic
