The KKK

(Johnny was a republican, Joey was a democrat, and Johnny "stole" Joey's girlfriend, apparently that's what "the KKK took my baby away" is about)

You is ubiquitous--as in, you should never have opened that door, they don't want to walk around with you, they remember you, they don't want you, etc.

Paul Ramon aka Macca in the Silver Beatles

Didn't know Ramon was based on "society hairdresser Raymond Cohen, known as Mr Teasy Weasy, who demonstrated ladies’ hairstyles on television in the fifties. Paul like him because he was an impossibly suave-looking fellow with slicked-back hair and a pencil moustache" , until I read Miles's book 'In the Seventies'.

Johnny was a republican, Joey was a democrat

...they both went down to Frisco, joined the SLA.

clemenza, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 18:12 (eleven years ago)

I think the full story, according to a couple of Ramones books, Johnny carried a KKK membership card in his wallet - either to freak people out or because he really was a racist or some combination of the two.

Some say KKK Took My Baby Away is about Johnny stealing Joey's girlfriend Linda, while others like Joey's brother Mickey Leigh say it was written about a different girl, and wasn't related to Johnny at all

It's true though, Johnny definitely was a right-winger and a big Reagan fan, while Joey was left-leaning.

brio, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 18:48 (eleven years ago)

The Johnny-Joey relationship turned what I thought was going to be a fairly conventional documentary (End of the Century)--invented punk rock, kept the faith, etc., etc.--into something great.
