Krautrock

Tropicalía

No wonder my favorite band is Stereolab.

Moka, Thursday, 20 March 2014 07:00 (eleven years ago)

Thread title should be 'list' instead of 'name' but it's fine if you want to name a genre.

Moka, Thursday, 20 March 2014 07:01 (eleven years ago)

post-punk
minimalism
disco

mary-kate and ashley's roachclip (get bent), Thursday, 20 March 2014 07:03 (eleven years ago)

Those exact three would probably be my second set of choices.

Mmm I'm going to assume your favorite band could be Blondie.... They're not precisely minimalistic though, maybe ESG? Im trying to think of a band which sounds influenced by those three genres and nothing comes to mind. LCD Soundsystem?

Moka, Thursday, 20 March 2014 07:10 (eleven years ago)

+ blank-faced party music

*not necessarily vocal

ogmor, Thursday, 20 March 2014 12:22 (eleven years ago)

I'll try to do this more seriously, in the spirit that Moka intended...

My 3 favourite "genres" are:

-Shoegaze
-Krautrock
-Stadium House

No wonder my favourite band is... School of Seven Bells?

Fingerbang On A Can (Branwell Bell), Thursday, 20 March 2014 12:28 (eleven years ago)

atm

- disco

Donna Summer?

gothic symphonic metal
indietronica
warm drone

Also, Fingerbang, what are 5-10 bands that represent Stadium House to you?

glenn mcdonald, Thursday, 20 March 2014 12:58 (eleven years ago)

for some reason the first thing that came to mind for the Shoegaze - Krautrock - Stadium House combo was Scooter, this is comically inaccurate but I'm sticking with it.

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 20 March 2014 13:06 (eleven years ago)

so much love for post-punk here, which isn't too surprising but i kind of feel its the most overrated genre? don't see what the big deal is

marcos, Thursday, 20 March 2014 13:49 (eleven years ago)

lo-fi usually shoegazey early 90s indie with krautrock drumming
yearning guitar-based american music that makes you think of gorgeous open spaces
wistful jangle-pop

This was difficult to narrow down.

Evan, Thursday, 20 March 2014 13:58 (eleven years ago)

what's my favorite artist? I sure as hell can't decide.

I guess you get the full package. I wanted to write reggae + disco + funk + punk + rap but post-punk at its best combines elements of all of them.

daavid, Sunday, 23 March 2014 22:50 (eleven years ago)

can't think where they combine all three all at once on the same song but these are good examples of each individually...

dub ar kane = baby milk snatcher
shoegaze ar kane = lolita
italo ar kane = love from outer space

Other than that though it's obvious stuff that you're way into already (Ruins)

continually topping myself (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 24 March 2014 16:14 (eleven years ago)

If you find more things that combine those three, let me know, though.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 24 March 2014 16:38 (eleven years ago)

"...Les Noces?"

that would definitely have fit! but yeah, when I looked at the list after I made it, I realized that I really do try to make music that combines that stuff. It seems like if your favorite genres are sufficiently not alike, you'd pretty much have to make up a new genre to get something that combines them.

Dominique, Monday, 24 March 2014 16:41 (eleven years ago)

Well, Beatlesque pop + early 20th century music could = a lot of prog, right? So I guess it's a question of how specifically Zeuhl-ish the prog should be?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 24 March 2014 16:44 (eleven years ago)

well, it's not really a lot of prog other than Magma and offshoot bands these days. Like, Yes is a good example of a prog band with Beatles influence...and years ago, I did listen to a lot of Yes, but not so much now. I guess what I'm thinking would be some weird combination of Harry Nilsson, Ravel and Magma. Which, if it existed, would probably cause a black hole to happen and swallow me.

Dominique, Monday, 24 March 2014 16:59 (eleven years ago)

I've been thinking and I'm not sure I could actually pick three genres unless it was something like:

music with an intricate combination of independent melodic or rhythmic lines
music with guitars
music with a rich and varied sonic palette

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 24 March 2014 17:03 (eleven years ago)

that sounds like Discipline-era Crimson to me, though I guess you could argue they don't have a hugely varied sonic palette. Same for Steve Reich's pieces with guitars. Meshuggah? Orthrelm?

Dominique, Monday, 24 March 2014 17:08 (eleven years ago)

All stuff I love, yeah. After I typed that, I actually thought "Hm, King Crimson should probably be my favourite band."

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 24 March 2014 17:13 (eleven years ago)

Actually, I don't think "rich and varied" exactly gets at what I'm going for there: "detailed sonic palette" is better, I think.

Eats like Elvis, shits like De Niro (Tom D.), Monday, 24 March 2014 18:17 (eleven years ago)

Unless they were referring to someone else, though as funk was one of my genres I think the vile calumny was aimed at me
