Songs with scizophrenic qualities

so i've been developing a bit of a fetish recently for songs that abruptly change for just a short time, could be a couple of seconds even, into essentially a completely different song without any warning, before going back into the original like it was nothing. seems like the neptunes and timbaland used this quite a bit back when they were prepared to take risks and make interesting music. some examples will explain it better tho:

Maybe my favourite, at 2:26:

1:53:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2wqmGu1EY8

2:56 more of a subtle one, but:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5rLz5AZBIA

2:29 kind of just a bridge, still cool tho:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0z0rcrG9fBQ

1:47 this one actually really pisses me off as i can't stand any other part of the song and it only lasts about 3 seconds:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ci40ae8BlcE

0:19 and another house/dance one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmZ8nCIRHZg

2:41 not necessarily a new thing either:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R20f-TPKjzc

if this actually became a Thing (unlikely, but w/e) the archetypal track would be Kanye's Bound 2 - here the abrupt change isn't just a gimmicky trick but actually a virtue of the music. i think part of the allure is the frustration (especially wrt to the Dizzee tune) of wanting to hear that good shit again, and not being able to without either faffing about with the seek bar or hearing the whole tune again.

anyway, i want to make a tumblr or something full of songs using this strange little musical trope. who knows of any more songs that do this?

It doesn't go back, but franz ferdinand has that intro in "take me out" that builds and builds into the stop-start rest of the song that doesn't let up.

There's a good deal of these type of moments on Sigh's Imaginary Sonicscape album but this one is my favorite:

His Name Is Alive - Sick

Chugging guitars and chick vox battles narcotized wibbling and string scrape. Swooping guitar solo wins.

having said that, none of these supposedly "disparate" strains of timbaland-sings-verse and timbaland-sings-chorus exist in a vacuum. many of us do, indeed, have shared assumptions & a conservative sense of boundary concerning what timbaland does & doesn't sing, and when, exactly he chooses to do so.

A bettter, or at least weirder ELO example would be Turn To Stone

Bound 2 is another trope altogether, songs with two seemingly unrelated sections that alternate back and forth.

The new Guru track has a chorus which lasts for all of three seconds, and then it's back...

Nah, the point was to make it a link, not an embed.

Frederik B, Friday, 21 March 2014 09:54 (eleven years ago)

Blind links are kinda dumb, but whatever.

Three Word Username, Friday, 21 March 2014 10:06 (eleven years ago)

(yours wasn't blind, the others were.)

Three Word Username, Friday, 21 March 2014 10:06 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, that's dumb. Agreed.

Maybe not schizophrenic so much as just "hey, let's throw in this smartass tempo change," but when this punk/pop song hits the booogie/blues break at :50 is one of my favorite things ever.

Was going to post this. The first time I listened to Blue I was walking to work, and I stopped the tape in the middle of "This Flight Tonight." When I resumed the tape on my lunch break, it was at the exact moment that little bit comes in. I freaked the fuck out, thinking I was either having a stroke or some weird aural hallucination. I stumbled and almost fell down.
