brio, Friday, 21 March 2014 15:06 (eleven years ago)

kids are kind of key, more so than dogs

brio, Friday, 21 March 2014 15:06 (eleven years ago)

There's something about it that's counter to annoying rock-and-roll marketing, where the band is just this atomized brand floating in space.

james franco tur(oll)ing test (Hurting 2), Friday, 21 March 2014 15:09 (eleven years ago)

in the band "next of kin" photo i always think about how all the stern elderly folks got along with their hippie children. i figure though that the band probably showed some reverence?

marcos, Friday, 21 March 2014 15:11 (eleven years ago)

i think levon, at least, got along with his folks ok

waterbabies (waterface), Friday, 21 March 2014 15:12 (eleven years ago)

Well the opener of Music From Big Pink is from the perspective of elders who don't understand their modern kids, and it's written very sympathetically to them. I don't really think of the Band as "hippies" fwiw.

james franco tur(oll)ing test (Hurting 2), Friday, 21 March 2014 15:13 (eleven years ago)

they def werent

waterbabies (waterface), Friday, 21 March 2014 15:14 (eleven years ago)

If anything they were probably kind of conservative for rockers. I don't really know their actual political views, but that's what I get from their songs.

james franco tur(oll)ing test (Hurting 2), Friday, 21 March 2014 15:15 (eleven years ago)

personas, bro

waterbabies (waterface), Friday, 21 March 2014 15:16 (eleven years ago)

hippies or not they were definitely a part of 60s counterculture, they sure as fuck didn't dress like actual 60s conservatives

marcos, Friday, 21 March 2014 15:16 (eleven years ago)

but yea i get you, in the same way i wouldn't call bob dylan a hippie

marcos, Friday, 21 March 2014 15:17 (eleven years ago)

Yeah I don't think they were like staunch right-wingers or anything, but I think of them as more to the CCR side of things.

james franco tur(oll)ing test (Hurting 2), Friday, 21 March 2014 15:19 (eleven years ago)

yeah - i think the whole thing of showing bands as having/being parents and dog-owners is cool and counter to rock n roll imagery

though the romanticized communal rural living image was pretty big in rock around the peak of these covers, like 69 - 72?

The Band cover and persona is a part of that I think - but agree there's a remove from flower child stuff and a respect for roots and elders that's a big part of the music too

brio, Friday, 21 March 2014 15:20 (eleven years ago)

Feel like Sublime has to have one of these somewhere...

how's life, Friday, 21 March 2014 15:27 (eleven years ago)

i'm thinking there must be some straight-edge or NYC HC giant crew shots too

^the Allmans picture is 73. According to the book that just came out about them, they bought that farm right before Berry Oakley died. Berry's kid is the little girl in the yellow dress to the left and his widow is one of the women near there too. Pretty cool they kept them involved after he died. I believe, but I'm not certain, that the woman sitting in front of Gregg is his and Duane's mother. I dont know who the kid she is holding is. Duane's long gone by then too.

There's a picture like this of Einstürzende Neubauten (and family and friends and, if I remember correctly, a dog) in the Strategies Against Architecture III packaging. I'll dig it out and scan it if somebody else doesn't find and post it first.

Yeah, those are from the photo session, but actual photo I am talking about is sort of the cd gatefold and is presented by itself, and is bigger and grander and more formally posed.

That's a winner in terms of sheer numbers of friends and relatives... and there's a dog too, good work, Scott!

Everybody should do these pictures. Are there any hip hop examples?

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 8 September 2014 13:49 (eleven years ago)

For hip hop they bring all of those people on the stage during a show.

Evan, Monday, 8 September 2014 14:28 (eleven years ago)

well, in rap videos there are friends and family galore. and even dogs sometimes.

scott seward, Monday, 8 September 2014 15:09 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, videos too.
