"Jump Around," not close. Not sure which White Elephant--"November Rain" or "Erotica"--is more elephant-like.

this is between "remember the time" and "ordinary world" but i'm pretty sure it shouldn't even be a fight

pm dawn over mj, house of pain fairly distant third. hated 'diamonds and pearls' so much at the time, hated it as a lame song, hate that became compounded as it became a huge hit, that became compounded further as 'there's a prince song that's a huge hit and i hate it and this has never happened before'. i like 'erotica' fine, though it is one of her weaker lead singles (obv it had to be the lead single). h-town still hilarious.

Voted for "The River of Dreams"; always thought it was one of his more underrated singles, and have a particular fondness for that little bit from "Gloria" which he throws in towards the end. Runners-up: "Jump Around" and "500 Miles".

"I'd Die Without You" just over "Erotica" and, yup, "River of Dreams."

I adore the Vanessa Wiliams ballads from this period, and "Love Is" is the best use of Brian McKnight, but I won't vote for it, and I won't vote for "Erotica" either as it's my least favorite first Madonna single.

Finalists:

P.M. Dawn – "I'd Die Without You"
Michael Jackson – "Remember the Time"
Duran Duran – "Ordinary World"

This one is tough. I actually listened to the radio when these were all popular. Narrowly Jump Around over November Rain and Ordinary World.

Jesus, that Proclaimers song...

MJ, but I voted for D2 to make sure they got a vote.
"Ordinary World" gets extra points for the 'releasing a dove' motion Simon always does live when they come out of the quiet bit.

Funny, I would've sworn "500 Miles" was more, like '88 or '89.

Only managed to get to #21 on the modern rock chart (missed the Hot 100 entirely) for its original release in 1989, but finally hit the Hot 100 four years later after Benny & Joon was released

On the topic of "Jump Around": for the longest time I had thought that the high-pitched noise which plays throughout was a sample of Prince screaming at the start of "Gett Off", which kinda added to its appeal for me

So I was actually rather disappointed when a few years back it emerged that the sample was really a pitched-down saxophone from a Junior Walker track
