Superstar DJ's

'The DJ is never the shaman, at most he is just the shamans drum'-Genesis P Orridge

I was watching something about Paul Oakenfold on d'telly recently and there was this sea of faces pressed up against the plexiglass of his DJ booth watching him spin his poxy records. WHY??!! There are some DJ's who elevate DJing/mixology into something special but isnt this reverence for DJ's getting out of hand? Maybe the dance media's promoted the DJ as rock star to combat rave cultures perceived 'facelessness' (raves 'facelessness' being one of its strengths). Do you think DJ's are lords of the dance or overpaid and over-rated?

Dunno, I used to love it back-in-the-days (oh boy) when at raves the Dj was moved into a dark corner of the club. No attention whatsoever. You could say it went wrong when DJ's started to get back into the centre of attention, back to the front, higher on a stage. Not really, but rave lost something when people started to dance facing the DJ, when before that they just danced. ;)

As for putting your face to the plexiglass, those are trainspotters, basically wannabe DJ's studying technique (which makes it something like DJ-class 101) or boys who have an obssesion with collecting maxi's. Both classes of trainspotters are as boring as audiophiles.

Fuckin' Chris Sheppard.... grumble grumble grumble.

Kim, Tuesday, 15 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Chris Sheppard isn't a DJ. he just acts like an idiot while he plays tracks off a cd.

Richie Hawtin, for sheer factory imitation

Why, yes, I think DJ's are brilliant, and great, and worth every penny that people pay to see them, in fact, why bother with bands at all? Fools! Yes, this really is Kate writing this, and not her Superstar DJ boyfriend, indeed.

All these cheezy dj's are over rated , overpaid dick heads, maybee they would get a bit more respect from real music lovers if they played good tunes. Its a sad state but we have to put up with it.

I bet the majority of them don't even know how to play a fretless bass!

DJs are the biggest assholes in the universe, followed by people who think they're actually artistes. Would anyone else get away with bragging about how narrow their taste in music is? Don't you think that covering up record labels is something an autistic teenager would do? And 'musicians' who brag about having huge collections of guitars are rightly laughed at, while accumulating massive record collections is the only 'skill' DJs seem to possess. The sooner someone snorts a line of something off a spinning record and does a Leah Betts the better!

tarden, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also, DJs are praised for crowd manipulation, I thought people who existed solely to please crowds were just prostitutes with nothing to say.

tarden, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The crowd wants to be manipulated. That's the whole point. Cool guys who can't get their groove thang on insist that this is a positive trait -- i.e. they can't be "manipulated". Their loss.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a mild form of autism. Shut the fuck up, Tarden.

Robin Carmody, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry. Delete "autistic", insert "attention-seeking". Apologies for gratuitous imprecision on my part.

tarden, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree that being manipulated is 'cool', because then you can claim you were only following orders.

tarden, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When those orders are from joy division, and are "DANCE DANCE DANCE TO THE RADIO!" then fuckyeah!

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i saw jeff mills once, and he had the place going insane. he went through an extraordinary amount of records (80% probably being his own) some only lasting, i don't know, 45 seconds, before he'd rip it off the decks, chuck something else on. a great night.

presumably tarden will concede that mills is an artiste in that he makes records, but the question as to whether mills the dj could be considered an artiste seems strange. i'm curious as to why it matters whether, as a dj, he could be considered an artiste. i considered it worth going to see him dj, as i wanted to hear the stuff he was playing (and theres certainly no other way i'd have got to hear that stuff) and i had a blinding night.

i'd also be interested in hearing tardens opinion on, say, christian marclay...

gareth, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tarden's (possibly fairly sarcastic and/or playful) position is that music cannot "move" you (= good, allegedly), it only manipulates" you (= bad). Since in Tarden's theory interraction with others = community = horrible, music can only be "good" when what moved you is YOURSELF, completely untainted by outside stimulus.

Christian Marclay - slightly above roadside attractions made entirely out of bottlecaps, slightly below carvings of clipper ships on matchheads.

There comes a time in every high caliber recording artist's career when they reach the landmark of their first DVD release. For the 8th biggest DJ in the world, that time is now.
