Gone, gone, gone: 12 albums that deserve milestone reissues in 2014 (but probably won’t get them) [AC Club]

The music industry is crazy for anniversaries. It’s only spring, and already 2014 has seen everything from the 40th-anniversary edition of Rush’s Rush to the 25th-anniversary edition of Bob Mould’s Workbook to the 20th-anniversary edition of Pantera’s Far Beyond Driven. Those are all landmark albums—but when far less notable bands like, say, 65daysofstatic are about to get a 10th-anniversary reissue, it’s enough to make any music fan wonder what the criteria are for such an honor. Okay, so there aren’t any criteria, at least not other than what the market will supposedly bear. Still, it’s strange that so many worthy albums that will hit big anniversaries—specifically their 10th, 20th, 25th, 30th, 40th, or 50th—in 2014 aren’t getting deluxe reissues, with all the bonus tracks, repackaging, liner notes, remastering, and reassessment that comes with them. A vote for 13 has to be an album that came out in 2004, 1994, 1989, 1984, 1974 or 1964 only.

My pick is Judas Priest. That album is overlooked even with a new-found hipster contingency that claims it's the best Priest album (which is wrong, though I appreciate the spirited argument nonetheless), Priest before they would (re-)invent metal and they simply boogied. It's had two album covers, each one bad. It can use an update and include some of that sweet Old Grey Whistle video:

Close second: Zen Arcade.

Lots of good stuff here, but went with Weird Al. It being 30 years old means a lot more to me than anniversaries of any of the others.

Can't decide between the Impressions and Hüsker Dü.

13. Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch - Maybe there's an alternate take of "Gazzelloni" or something that they've been suppressing for 50 years

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Monday, 24 March 2014 20:48 (eleven years ago)

Jolene got an expanded reissue back in the mid 2000s.

not that it needs remastering or reassessing, but 13) here come the warm jets

Out To Lunch occurred to me as well; also, Andrew Hill's Point Of Departure (recorded 50 years ago last Friday!) But Hill's already gotten the massive box treatment from Mosaic (and I think there were only two PoD outtakes).

Fun fact: Out To Lunch was recorded the same day that Ali beat Liston in Miami for the first time.

Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain

considering the wealth of outtakes, alternate takes, live tracks, unreleased albums, etc., i would love to see a proper prince reissue program get rolling, and this woud be as good a place as any to start, i am not holding my breath, however.

Zen Arcade is all-time, and could certainly benefit from a remaster (my CD version doesn't sound bad, just quiet); but from what I understand of the recording process, there aren't likely to be any outtakes or unheard material lying around to fill out a 'deluxe reissue' with, correct? Live versions could be a nice bonus tho

who in their right mind gives a fuck about a Rocka Rolla reissue, that album is fucking boring.

Your face is boring.

sorry I see NYCNative does care and my comment was not in response to him! just overall found it to be a bland album, only song I kinda liked was "One for the Road". perhaps it's because of just how superior SAd Wings is....

xpost haha damn yer quick son

Neanderthal, Thursday, 3 April 2014 03:41 (eleven years ago)

always felt that Machine Head album was overrated too. like it's not bad, but if I want that sound I usually opt for Testament's Low

There's a three disc bootleg download of Zen Arcade outakes. Some are very different sounding productions or performances.
