A sweet opportunity here, obviously.

2-4 WEEK TOUR - must be able to pay for own food and hotel, i'll cover gas/toll expenses. SOME SHOWS will pay but not a lot so this is more for people who understand the industry and want to further their career, not to make money.

espring (amateurist), Tuesday, 25 March 2014 00:59 (eleven years ago)

His "label" he's "signed" to seem like an "honest" bunch.

Oops, amateurist beat me to it. Here's my other favorite part:

if your looking to bank and make a bunch of money off the bat this is not for you nor is this industry.

honestly though aren't these kinds of things a dime a dozen? at least he's not doing it in the name of "lovin the fans" a la amanda palmer.

espring (amateurist), Tuesday, 25 March 2014 01:26 (eleven years ago)

yeah, i've been "offered" chances to join bands or play gigs that were way worse than this

Lee626, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 01:27 (eleven years ago)

I'm sure it's more common than not, but it's sure an entertaining example.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 01:30 (eleven years ago)

It's crass, but really the truth on a bunch of musicians that made it was a similar deal. Original sidemen litter the road to gold Once there was some real money coming in, they were put on a bus back to Topeka or some place like that. There probably will be some gullible people that will buy in hoping to catch that brass ring dream too.

There really isn't much real money out there until you already got a real following, which is hard to have unless you are playing live quite a bit or already have music released. The bands that are kinda weird are those ones that are really young and the only shows they seem to play is some weird showcase put on by a 'manager' or 'publisher'. There is a whole cottage industry of people putting those pay to play gigs on for suckers dreaming of being signed. (By who at this point, who knows.)

When the thread title says "Gullible", I mean, who exactly is being given false impression?

It reads by anyone including the man on a galloping horse as being a "do as yr told" deal for little money if any.

Struggling to see what's so wrong about this. He's being 100% upfront about what he expects people to do, I don't see the problem.

I've at least twice had someone who wanted me to join their band that was "signed to a label" or had a "record contract", and I had to explain to them the difference between being signed and paying some company to stamp 500 CDs to be sold at their gigs

Lee626, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 12:10 (eleven years ago)

Why oh why don't we have an "ILX Fedoras thread" because dude should so clearly be on it.

(To be fair, at least this guy is honest about what he's doing. 20 years ago, when I was doing session work, it was always the dipshits who *wanted* this to be the deal, but would pretend like they were looking for "session players" but then try to sweet-talk or bully you into "well, you're so good, I want you to ~join the band~ (and take on a share of costs)" and it's like... fuck you, pay me.)

yeah Reverb Nation fascinates me, SO many musicians/bands have a page on there but no music fan on earth uses it to listen to or discover music and it doesn't seem to really offer any concrete service or purpose other than, like, resembling old MySpace band pages.

some dude, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 12:34 (eleven years ago)

I still think there's a gap in the market for a really good music social network. Soundcloud is fine, but not really all that customisable. Bandcamp is also fine, but again, I feel like these sites could do more with what they have. I liked it when bands and artists could meet via Myspace, hook up and do shows etc... SC and BD are great if you want to host and flog music, but the 'social' aspect of it is lacking. There's hardly any 'like this, try this?' factor which would get me hooked into discovering loads of new stuff, there's no video-hosting service, nowhere to find more about the acts other than a few links... Seems like an oversight to me.

Last FM has some of that, the social aspect of it works great for me.

This Craigslist homie seems pretty risible to me. Note that he's not calling it a solo-artist project (i.e. Mark NoHoper), it has a "band" name. But he seems to want to *have* a band but doesn't want to act like he is *in* a band. While lecturing the implied neophyte reader from on high about the Nature Of The Industry, he doesn't strike me as experienced at all about the rudimentary basics of touring as a band. Pooling expenses for gas by, duh, getting a van and doing things collectively is Touring Band 101; imperiously ordering all of your bandmates to get themselves to these quasi-gigs just exposes this for the vanity project it undoubtedly is (he doesn't want bandmates, he wants interns, a move you can maybe pull if you're already successful but that's not the case here). Also, this itinerary is geographically (and hence financially) preposterous. The good news: this is going to go absolutely nowhere. Normally I try to muster up some kind of we're-all-in-this-together solidarity but fuck this guy and his fedora.

Of course the joke's on me if it's Jandek behind that fedora.

Sometimes I have this fantasy where I'm a frustrated musician and finally one day I decide to call it quits and say "This is a sucker's game. I'm going to create one of those businesses that's designed to bloodsuck off other aspiring/frustrated musicians, THAT'S how you make money in this industry." Only then I find out that instead of flailing in a sea of failed musicians, I'm flailing in a sea of failed entrepreneurs, and there's yet another layer of entrepreneurs trying to take advantage of the entrepreneurs, and it starts all over.

james franco tur(oll)ing test (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 25 March 2014 15:46 (eleven years ago)

i think this guy may have been in a band, kept the name but now just wants, as you say, "interns" to back him up.

instead of flailing in a sea of failed musicians, I'm flailing in a sea of failed entrepreneurs

i can definitely see this as being the case, only if you can sucker one or two venture capitalists you might make a living on it for a few years.

espring (amateurist), Tuesday, 25 March 2014 20:06 (eleven years ago)

if you go to his website he has a screed about his former bandmates who all hate him

akm, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 20:09 (eleven years ago)

"fourth and lastly.... alot of you know ive gone through many members and there have been mixed messages about why and id like to clear it up so people know the truth. Ive gotten equipment stolen, ive had members leave my equipment places when borrowing it, ive had to pay for many members side of the payments for recording travel even food, ive had to buy equipment just so they could play and they never paid me back, my rep has been ruined many times because of the lies these members spill, ive had shows ruined and fans lost due to these members, and recently ive had members sign contracts knowing what was expected of them and they still complained and acted like they didnt know and bailed on me. one member raised money online for the tour and didnt even use that money for the tour so illegally he stole your money whoever supported him and another member made decisions on tour that cost us extra money and almost ruined my trailer and van by not checking if the trailer was actually hitched when he checked it. my point is these members that come and go fuck themselfs and i let them know what is expected before they join. so next time you hear bullshit about me or the band or even just wonder why i go through members like crazy , now you know i keep getting unreliable immature ignorent people who know nothing but scales and how to mimick others music. i love what i do its my life and i learned what i needed to learn and am still learning and i dont take shit nor will i risk my career on anyone anymore. so now you know im just strict and people cant handle this level of industry. thank you to all the fans who have stuck by me because ive always been 7sf i just now made me being solo official. I've had a lot of equipment stolen or broken or pawned or left behind by others over the years, but the gear I've been gifted has been such a windfall, it more than makes up for it. I miss my Ibanez Flying Z, but it's no Space Echo. Makes karma seem real.

This might be really an item for another thread, but on the whole Reverb Nation/Bandcamp axis, there is definitely something not there on any of those music sites.

Bandcamp is good if you know the name of a band you are looking to find, but while it looks pretty, it's not that usable if you say want to just browse music from a specific area/genre. Reverb Nation breaks everything down like the old MP3.com and other early music sites where you got lists by genre by location. Bandcamp looks much better and for playing music is fine, but I wish it had some more geographical and genre based search functions.

I don't think anyone has really got it right and eventually someone will and make a shite ton of money while the musicians' get .0007 percent of a cent for every play.

earlnash, Wednesday, 26 March 2014 00:14 (eleven years ago)

Does Bandcamp even have search/browse options? I've never gone to it except off a band's link

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Wednesday, 26 March 2014 00:27 (eleven years ago)

It does indeed.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 March 2014 00:49 (eleven years ago)

Bandcamp isn't perfect or anything, but it's at least useful and simple for what it is, and i use it to find/buy/listen to music and know lots of other people who do too. i don't know anybody who uses Reverb Nation.
