For sure One Armed Scissor, but my favorite song from this era (which was on a split 7" and not the album - though it was included on a reissue) is "Extracurricular":

^^ that's cool, i'd never heard it before.

i'm torn between a bunch of songs. i think the more cacophonous, on-song-against-all-odds songs work best. perhaps i'm going to vote for the opener. such an explosive announcement.

charlie h, Sunday, 6 April 2014 11:55 (eleven years ago)

Pattern Against User I think.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Sunday, 6 April 2014 12:17 (eleven years ago)

This is an album I'm always happy to be reminded of the existence of. Are their first two worth a listen?

big fan of the Vaya EP. less taken by the first two full lengths, but they definitely warrant a listen.

charlie h, Sunday, 6 April 2014 12:33 (eleven years ago)

i like invalid litter dept. or quarantine...I agree that vaya is their best recording though, by far. early stuff is pretty emo, I like it a lot. circuit scene from their first ep is a great song.

"Lopsided" is a fucking incredible song. in/casino/out is totally worth hearing; I actually like it more than Relationship of Command.

cwkiii, Sunday, 6 April 2014 20:37 (eleven years ago)

Voted for "One Armed Scissor", but it could easily have been any of the first three tracks.

cwkiii, Sunday, 6 April 2014 20:38 (eleven years ago)

definitely "Invalid Litter Dept."

Simon H., Sunday, 6 April 2014 20:53 (eleven years ago)

when I relisten now the impassioned vox vs. stream-of-consciousness gobbledygook lyrical approach kinda bugs me, which probably helps that one stand out for having identifiable subject matter

Simon H., Sunday, 6 April 2014 20:55 (eleven years ago)

Rolodex Propaganda is such a FUN song

a lot of this album is fun actually, even when it's punishingly serious

I first heard these guys via the "one armed scissor" on MTV and was like "wow, MTV are playing good rock music". It was so refreshing, felt like the 90s finally died and the new rock hits would be all juiced up fugazi/drive like jehu stuff

I mean, it felt like a new generation calling, not 30-something sunset strip jackholes

brimstead, Monday, 7 April 2014 01:47 (eleven years ago)

Love the nu-metal crunch on "Cosmonaut", whose intensity* singlehandedly keeps the back half of the album from dragging

* most overused descriptor w/r/t this band? with good reason, tho

One-Armed Scissor is gonna take this, obviously

Gonna decide between OAS, Mannequin Republic, Arcarsenal, at the very least...

I rep for In/Casino/Out - Transatlantic Foe is probably my favorite song ever by them

I haven't listened to this in a long time, it got played a lot in our house during my 2nd year at university and I did get burned out on it eventually. 'Cosmonaut' was always my favourite track though.

Funnily enough, my enduring memory of this album was me taking it up to the register at Mondo Kim's on St. Marks Place and having the appalled cashier get into an actual rage ringing it up, like something out of a bad skit, going "these fucking poseurs are named after a lyric from a Poison song. You know, that, right? Fake ass Beastie Boys punk. Fuck these dress-up cartoons." (long pause) "That'll be $12.99." He was so angry.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I was really into ATDI in high school and still enjoy them on occasion. This is a great album, but Pattern Against User was a fairly easy choice for me; an In/Casino/Out poll would be much tougher.

ablaeser, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 00:21 (eleven years ago)

tempted to get drunk and listen to this for the first time in maybe a decade

probably invalid litter

pity we couldn't get a few more votes in so that each song got some acknowledgement, but the results seem to reflect the flow of opinion from back in the day.

Rolodex Propaganda 0

:(

six years pass...

Invalid Litter Dept is an amazing song, it’s rage deserved and righteous.
