i just want to know

donna (donna), Thursday, 17 October 2002 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Like, at this very moment?

hstencil, Thursday, 17 October 2002 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently not a lot according to her site:
15th May 2002
Currently on a break after two years on the road, Polly is now taking some time out before she starts writing for her next album. News will be fairly slow, but we will continue to post all news as and when it happens.

And she will be on the fifth continent in January for a festival.
Plus At this time, no other live dates are planned for next year.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 17 October 2002 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

She's in my kitchen eating an ice bun.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 17 October 2002 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

sub "my kitchen" for "manhattan"
sub "an ice bun" for "vincent gallo"

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 18 October 2002 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks :-)

donna (donna), Friday, 18 October 2002 02:14 (twenty-three years ago)

What's an ice bun? (seriously)

What's a Vincent Gallo? (not seriously)

Kim (Kim), Friday, 18 October 2002 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Kim I asked this question earlier (seriously) and got an answer, so I'll do the same for you: it's some kind of flat pastry with icing. English people eat it.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 18 October 2002 02:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, that's too bad. Thanks though.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 18 October 2002 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently Polly is unhappy with "Stories From The City..." and wants her next album to be a darker affair a la "Is This Desire?" - which suits me fine.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 18 October 2002 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

If she's unhappy with that album, which IMO is her best by a SCREAMING MILE, I can't see myself buying another record of hers.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 18 October 2002 03:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, young Jim, go smash your head on the punk rock that is _Dry_, ya silly. Not to say that _Stories..._ was bad; it was a bit stiff, though. I'm not expecting any more ur-Alanis mythic screes on the ways of love, but a little less restrained professionalism would be nice.

Then again, I think my 2nd favorite PJ Harvey record (behind _Dry_) is that joint she recorded w/ John Parish, so I might be certifiable.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 18 October 2002 03:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I do like Dry, but Stories... really impressed me - it was like the record I'd always wanted her to make..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 18 October 2002 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I always wanted Flood and Head to have a baby that recorded a slew of _Rid of Me_-type songs.

And it's too bad Dan won't be checking this thread anytime soon.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 18 October 2002 03:59 (twenty-three years ago)

5´3´´?

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 18 October 2002 04:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(just terrible. I'm really, really sorry.)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 18 October 2002 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

'Stories from the city...' is easily her worst. I hate it, and I love everything else she's done. There're no good tunes there. It's boring.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 18 October 2002 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

?!?! I don't understand, I really don't. I had no interest in hearing "Is This Desire" and "To Bring You My Love" more than once.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 18 October 2002 04:16 (twenty-three years ago)

"Stories" is great taken by itself. Compared to the raging blur of her first two, though, any album that follows will surely pale.

paul cox (paul cox), Friday, 18 October 2002 04:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Stories... is easily one of the worst albums I own.
I don't necessarily need her to return to the sound of Dry. But a little bit of the dark mystery of Is This Desire? would be much appreciated. I like it best when Polly frightens me a bit. Not when she's a Gucci-clad socialite.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 18 October 2002 04:41 (twenty-three years ago)

You're all mad. Sorry.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 18 October 2002 04:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Is This Desire? is not quite as good as I like to think it is (it's actually very consistent, but it could do with one or two more rockers) - however I think it points to something great that Polly might do which Stories... thoroughly avoided. I'm thinking of the thick darkness of "A Perfect Day, Elise"... I'd love a whole album of that.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 18 October 2002 11:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I like all her albums, actually. *takes another bite of ice bun*

Sean (Sean), Friday, 18 October 2002 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with Sean, but I have to side with Jim in that I really thought Stories was flat out amazing (so did Ally, bless her heart). So if she doesn't like it now, fair enough, but I think she's overreacting.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 October 2002 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Is This Desire? sounded like it would be a grower, but it never did for me. Stories was a wilter. Strong at first, then the more I heard, the less interest I took in its prosaic stories and too many alt-radio style songs.

Curt (cgould), Friday, 18 October 2002 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

has anyone got the stomach for it after the last one...I mean, really.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 October 2002 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

PJ bewitched me with 4-Track Demos and Dance Hall at Louse Point (the Parrish joint). They were nice soundtracks for alcoholism. Is this Desire? was compelling but not absorbing. Stories angered me for being so mediocre. I've already written her off.

Paraphrasing a PJ interview when Stories came out:
Interviewer: This record seems to indicate that you're in a happy frame of mind now. Is this so?
PJ: The word "happy" is not in my vocabulary.

Seems to be a 50/50 split between those who love the record and those who hate it.

Darren, Friday, 1 November 2002 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

and those who hate it can go suck dick on the moon

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 1 November 2002 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It doesn't feel like 3.5 years since the last record actually. Not that I'm complaining.

Leee the Lee (Leee), Friday, 12 March 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm 99% sure she was at a Jon Brion show in L.A. the other night.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 March 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

Well...we can confirm that there will be a new album from Polly this year...in fact September 24th is the actual date. We can also confirm that the album, produced by Polly, Flood & John Parish, will be titled White Chalk and features musical contributions from long time associate, Eric Drew Feldman, and also Jim White of the Dirty Three.
Polly is expected to preview some of the news songs, at her upcoming sold-out show, this coming Saturday in Manchester. We're expected more news over the coming weeks, so check back regularly.

whoa, good news!

billstevejim, Monday, 2 July 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

I hope she has that muppet guitarist from the last touring band of hers put down.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 2 July 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

It's funny that the thread gets all divided about Stories From The City etc. and then says nothing about the far duller album that came after it.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 2 July 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't heard a PJ Harvey album since To Bring You My Love. Should I bother catching up?

Sparkle Motion, Monday, 2 July 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

of course! I was not crazy about Stories from the City.. but she has never made a bad album

I really liked Uh Huh Her

The new material sounds interesting so far, especially this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=AuuEFNrmpvk "Silence". Here's a link to an early review of "White Chalk" http://www.uncut.co.uk/blog/index.php?blog=6&p=376&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1#more376 . The piano isn't the most familar instrument to Pj, & on one account I read a criticism of her playing being "chopsticks" like in nature, but the contrast with her higer register vocals transcends simplicity for me.

Operator plug, Saturday, 28 July 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

Hell yeah, that you tube clip was tanfastic! Something tells me she might have a hard time capturing that in the studio, though. I guess we'll see.

Bimble, Sunday, 29 July 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

Here's another song from the new one, The Devil. I have a good feeling about this, even though Uh-Huh Her was kind of a dud.

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 29 July 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

Stories From The City is my favorite record of hers. I don't get why so many people put it down.

I tried a few times to be friends with PJ Harvey on myspace and it says I need to enter her last name. I guess "Harvey" is somehow incorrect.

billstevejim, Sunday, 29 July 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

I saw her last summer and she was amazing, the new stuff all sounded great, and she did a lot of just banging a drum and singing. It was a bit Scout Niblett-ey.

I know, right?, Sunday, 29 July 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

Stories From The City is my favorite record of hers. I don't get why so many people put it down.

It's the worst one, with the worst songs. I think I loved almost every PJ Harvey song up to that point, including b-sides, but strongly disliked 75% of the songs on Stories. It was a shock. Probably I would have accepted it as a pretty decent record by anyone else... but I was shocked.

Eyeball Kicks, Sunday, 29 July 2007 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

And those new songs (one listen -- I'm not gonna spoil it for myself): Silence - boring; The Devil - that's the stuff.

Eyeball Kicks, Sunday, 29 July 2007 23:41 (eighteen years ago)

It's the worst one, with the worst songs.

If I ever go to a PJ Harvey party, remind me to stay away from this dude.

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 29 July 2007 23:59 (eighteen years ago)

i sort of agree with the criticism of 'stories...'. half of it's good, but not fantastic, while the rest of the tracks lack her staple energy and intensity and aren't particularly interesting at all. falls away unflatteringly at the end too...

Charlie Howard, Monday, 30 July 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

SFTCSFTS was the first PJ album I heard properly and at the time I absolutely adored it - it made me rush out the next day and buy Rid Of Me, To Bring You My Love and Is This Desire, bits of each of which I liked, but felt nowhere near as strongly about.

However, in light of my compression fetish, I listened to SFTCSFTS the other day, and while I still liked the melodies and the tunes, the sound quality of it was absolutely horrendous on a lot of songs, and I couldn't make it all the way through. It is very flat, very bright, very ill-defined, very inyourface, ESPECIALLY compared to Rid Of Me, and I can totally see why that might make people hate it, even if that's not their conscious reason. It is slick as fuck, production wise, and the songs suffer from it.

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 30 July 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

This Is Love, Big Exit, This Mess We're In, Good Fortune.. these are not among the worst PJ songs, just fyi. "This Is Love" might be my favorite track of hers. And I think the production totally compliments the songs.

billstevejim, Monday, 30 July 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

those songs are fine. and 'a place called home' tops them all in my view. it's just that the record generally seems really soulless. she's even sounding over-earnest or something - very uncharacteristic for her.

Charlie Howard, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

I'm more of an "Is This Desire?" and "Dry" guy.

"Stories..." is fucking awful. I love "Horses in my Dreams," though.

The new stuff sounds strangely promising.

Turangalila, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

Stories From the City is very different from other PJ Harvey albums. A comment like "it has the worst songs" is absurd from the point of view of people who actually like rock and roll songwriting in the traditional, Chuck Berry-Beatles-Stones kind of way: it clearly, unambiguously has the best lyrics, the truest structures, the BEST songs. Point, is, that isn't what people like about Dry or Rid of Me or especially To Bring You My Love, so if you love those albums it's not surprising you'd miss this. SFTC is less intense, less overtly sexual, less impassioned, more deliberate and calm and . . . dare I say it, in this context? Happy. Her bad fortune really does sound like it's been slipping away.

Here's Pj Harvey's new single: http://blog.thesyn.com.s17153.gridserver.com/?p=1553
It's a lot more subtle and short than I expected, on repeated listening I'm finding her vocal tone effective for the context of the song.

Operator plug, Saturday, 4 August 2007 07:52 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Just heard it for the first time last night and it literally gave me nightmares. This is one of her best songs. If White Chalk is all this good, it'll be the album of the year.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 24 August 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

the album is pretty great.

^@^, Friday, 24 August 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

I've only heard "Ether," and while I liked it, there wasn't enough there to make me super-excited about the album.

jaymc, Friday, 24 August 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

on the cover of The Wire this month...

henry s, Friday, 24 August 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

okay, this is pretty amazing. and that final track... wow²

StanM, Thursday, 6 September 2007 07:09 (eighteen years ago)

This album is seriously great -- I need to hear it a couple more times to offer any substantial thoughts.

Operator plug, Friday, 7 September 2007 05:34 (eighteen years ago)

Ditto.
