Breaking up is easy to do

A friend of mine has recently broken up with his girlfriend, well, I say recently but she moved out to clear her head a couple of months ago = the death knell. I want to put together a CD to try and cheer him up and what I'm after is some song suggestions.

I'm thinking of "curl up on the sofa and rock gently back and forth whilst dwelling on it" songs moving through to "it's not the end of the world, get over it" songs, so hopefully he'll finish the compilation in a better frame of mind than he started it. If you want to nominate a track number on this journey (say 1 to 15) then that would be helpful.

There's usually one album that I fix on post-break up, many years ago it was the "Victorialand", to this day "The Thinner The Air" makes me feel tearful. Last time I broke with someone, I used to listen to Thieves "Unworthy" over and over, (a 2 or 3 on the scale).

um.......my ex LIVED on dylans 'time out of mind' for weeks, but i would only suggest track 1 'love sick' as a first song, then move on to something more uplifting for sure.( it is one to dwell on whilst rocking on your sofa alone and crying.)or perhaps 'standing in the doorway', equally awful and sad.

Just give him a copy of Kid A by Radiohead and tell him to wollow in it for a few days.

Death Cab for Cutie's "Photobooth" is nice and melodic with just the right amount of mournful. It's basically about a guy looking back on a relationship and realizing he needs to move on. I'd put it somewhere in the middle just because it's a still a bit of the sad side.

"Love Sick" to "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" is quite a leap, I might have to make it a double. BTW, he's a bit of a blues buff, so any obscure suggestions from that genre would be appreciated.

A great "get over it" song is Honeybunch's My Contribution to the Greenhouse Effect

"My present to
The world we knew
Is to burn it to the ground and start anew"

The Church - "No Explanation" is a great mid-point.

The best curl up on the couch and die tune is Karl Hendricks Trio and The Last Thing You'll Ever Do For Me.

"Hold me down
Kiss me and cut my throat
Lie down here next to me
And let my blood flow"

who could call my name without regretting
who could see beyond this my darkness
and for once save their own prayers
who could mirror down just a little
of their sun

how could this go so very wrong
that I must depend on darkness
would anyone follow me further down
how could this go so very far
that I need someone to say
what is wrong
not with the world but me

who could call my name without regretting
who could promise to never destroy me
tonight my head is full of wishes
and everything I drink is full of her

the field mice song 'willow' is the most polite break-up song ever.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 17 October 2002 23:00 (twenty-three years ago)

polite? that song makes me weep uncontrollably.

Flipper's "Life" is always a tonic in these situations

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 18 October 2002 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

willow is polite though, and it can still be sad as well. it's almost precise in outlining the case. having your new girl sing it to the old one is kinda cold.

I wonder if Bob Wratten intends to come off as as much of a bastard as he does...

_Seamonsters_ is pretty heart-wrenching for the "lie on the sofa" part of the tape...

Flying Burrito Brothers, "Hot Burrito #1"
Jane Siberry, "Love Is Everything"
Kinks, "Days"

you mentioned he's a bit of a blues buff, so:

Mark Lanegan - I'll Take Care of You
Gun Club - Port of Souls

" i count the blessings that took u away from me
- i don't miss what you got i don't miss
what you do, so now i raise my glass and
drink a toast of bitterness to you"

an excess of the word 'you' there to be sure, but
still.

'bitter' - lush.

"Sun comes up Tuesday morning" Cowboy Junkies is all about breaking up, feeling sad but also appreciating singledom
