Objective report: 14 good, 7 boring/overrated. LIST WINS.

Unexpected finding: surrounding hoary pollrecords (eg Slanted, Screamadelica) with good records which are kind of second-division as far as the canon goes (& also which I like) has a knock-on effect of making me look kindly on the Slanteds. I also can't get too upset about anything dull being in the bottom 25 of a list, obviously.

Tom, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

only 2 singles. hopefully there'll be more singles as this goes on
in a silent way. well, there's one of joshs choices;)

gareth, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes justice!!! Somebody else voted for Radio Ethiopia, Black Secret Technology and Future Days (that was one of the rules wasn't it?). I'm quite happy with the first 25 records (of which I own 15 ;)

Omar, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe Fred could carry out a separate ballot just for singles??

Scott, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wasn't even going to include that, Gareth, I just did because I knew someone else did, and listing 40 records is hard. ;)

Josh, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, that was quick ! Thanks, Fred. The list looks promising. Did few people vote for singles, or is just that there wasn't much of a consensus there ?

Patrick, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn fine list so far, I'll be looking forward to the rest.

Michael, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

scott: the goal of the poll was to include ALL records: studio albums, compilations, singles, box sets, etc.

gareth: it was a josh choice, but someone else also had to pick it. i don't remember who currently.

patrick: a mix of both. some people only went with albums. others did half-n-half. no one did all singles.

personally, i'd say that 15 of the albums on the list are good, i.e. i own them or would own them. not a bad start. more to follow.

fred solinger, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what? no byrds on the list? no happy mondays - bummed or twenty four hour party people? no super furry animals???? no millennium? no association - along comes mary????? no boo radleys - giant steps??

paul, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

paul: keep in mind that those are only the first (or rather the last) twenty five.

fred solinger, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Got 2 in so far, it looks pretty good. I'm assuming that Bon Jovi and Poison are probably in the top 25.

james e l, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

judy collins?????? trompe de la monde?????

not even a terry callier album???????????????????????????????????????

but come on.., Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doom Patrol, you must chill out and be patient. Good things come to those who wait, and if they don't, well, then you can raise eighteen times the stink! Ha! As for me, I've got 12 of those. Can't remember without going home to check the email whether Radio Ethiopia made my final list, but it certainly was on the shortlist... Raw Power was certainly there, though. Fred, are you going to keep putting them on this thread, or split them into separate threads as the results are tabulted by the academy?

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Uh, -I- voted for singles only, did you not get my ballot ? *horrified*

Patrick, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

patrick: yes, you did vote only singles. revise: only one person voted all singles. unless anyone else cares to correct me. ;)

sean: separate threads.

fred solinger, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The "Blue Lines law" is upheld, I see. In other words, the rule that "Blue Lines" MUST come in the bottom third of ALL lists. Have you noticed how often this happens?

IMHO it's not very good apart from "Safe from Harm".

Dr. C, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

actually, dr. c, it's my favorite album of the 90s and contains my favorite single in "unfinished sympathy." ;)

but i didn't vote for it.

fred solinger, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've nothing against it, it's a pleasant listen, just not as good as it's cracked up to be. Protection's much better, I think.

I reckon Tricky will get in with "Maxinequaye" at around number 25, with Portishead's "Dummy" at between 50 and 60.

Dr. C, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I voted for all singles. None of my choices has made it yet. Of course, you can't tell that from this thread because Fred split the list up. What a stupid poll.

Greg, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i've only got two records listed and i would not have voted for either. good thing i didn't vote then.

keith, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Admission time. Two of the records I voted for are on this list -- both of the singles, in fact. I felt fairly certain a certain somebody would certainly vote for "Send In The Clowns", but the Sweet Female Attitude one was a bit of a longshot that paid off rather nicely, hurrah.

Michael Daddino, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gee, if only that made me have hope for my Jean-Luc Godard record.

Who the fuck are Sweet Female Attitude anyway, Mike? (He sez, while sitting at a computer connected to the interweb).

Josh, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Some popgirlduo. Nothing you'd ever warm up to, Mr. Grumpy Gus. :)

Michael Daddino, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ouch. You know how to hit me where it hurts, sir. NEVER? I am the master of warming up. I am a musical toaster oven. I have five convenient temperature settings as well as 'BROIL'.

Josh, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

its too bad Ritual de lo Habitual wasn't higher up. mmmph.

SleepTilItHurts, Tuesday, 15 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thought this portion of the list was being unfairly neglected...

Judy Collins - "Send in the Clowns" (single)

I've heard of this but I don't know it. Would someone like to tell me why it's great?

Nick, Tuesday, 15 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What I wrote about it. Synchronistically relevant to a couple of other recent threads, too.

Tom, Tuesday, 15 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sweet Female Attitude? Motion wrote about them here which would mean I'd think you'd at least have heard of 'em. 2-step. Gushy, mushy, lovely 2-step.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 15 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I may have read that, Sterling. But you know how it goes - until you reach a certain critical amount of awareness of a band (and scene/genre more importantly) it all just sounds the same. The writing, I mean. ;)

Since Mr. Daddino voted for it I figured they were some kind of Japanese confection or something.

Josh, Tuesday, 15 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Presumably the finest works of Chas and Dave will appear in the upper echelons of your poll?

Dave, Tuesday, 15 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight

Surely this benefitted from its re-release and the recent tour, but why this level of regard? (Admittedly, I've never heard the album. I'm more curious than anything else
