i felt weird when i saw him live and he drifted into a reggae jam.

ddd, Thursday, 17 October 2002 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

reggae jam? where was this?

g. winogrand, Thursday, 17 October 2002 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't stand Ted Leo's voice, but I don't really have anything against his music.

charlie va, Thursday, 17 October 2002 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

hell yes. Tyranny Of Distance is easily my favorite album of the past year or so. finally get to see him live in a couple weeks. still need to start digging up Chisel stuff. which album is reccomendable to get first?

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 17 October 2002 23:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm quite a fan of Ted Leo's solo stuff and of the Chisel stuff--if you're looking for a Chisel starter I'd suggest "8 A.M. All Day." It's the only full Chisel album I've heard, but it's pretty snappy.

Also of note is a band that Ted and his brother Danny were in--The Sin Eaters. Never recorded as far as I know, but they practiced at Fort Thunder and played around here a bit--fun classic rock influenced stuff. Very tongue in cheek.

chisel - "set you free" is great pop all around. came out in 97 on gern blandsten. i would go further, but the johnny walker is starting to kick in.

they do a solid live show.

Josh (Josh), Friday, 18 October 2002 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

He does a mean solo cover of Lauryn Hill's "Ex Factor". _Set You Free_ is the album you want, Al. (Brock, you lush.) The one time I saw them live (in their latest configuration, complete w/ backup singers & everything), he played solo for a couple of songs, and then had the band jump in halfway through "Timorous Me" (just like on the record!!). He's snazzy like that. And he likes Thin Lizzy. And I'm tired. Zonk.

I second that "set you free" emotion. GREAT album.

this was in montreal last year during the last song he just started to give it a reggae revolution feel (you know the one). i think he even started saying raggae-ish stuff (with possible accent but i forget)

ddd, Friday, 18 October 2002 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

was s'posed to see him last Sunday with Oneida and Company but I was sick.

hstencil, Friday, 18 October 2002 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Sin-Eaters never released anything, but the Pharmacists have recorded some of their songs. That song "Treble in Trouble" that Ted kind of toasts over now is one of them. I think there were a bunch of Sin-Eaters songs on the last album, too.

By the way, the new songs sound really good live--more rock. I'm sure the next LP will be great.

Very nice people, but the music I can take it or leave it.

brg30 (brg30), Friday, 18 October 2002 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

If yr going to see him live, make sure he has a back-up band with him, as Ted Leo solo = boring as fuck. I think I've mentioned this before, but when I saw him, he played solo, just guitar and voice, for close to 2 1/2 hours. oh my god. Nothing that lasts 2 1/2 hours can be good.

Nick A., Friday, 18 October 2002 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

chisel was fucking amazing. set you free and 8am all day are pretty crucial records. as far as him playing solo and being boring i beg to differ. i saw him pre-back up band and it was just him his guitar and a reel-to-reel and it was brilliant. he even covered chisel songs requested by the audience. he can go overboard sometimes and not stop playing for a long time...but his voice is pretty addicting so i dont really mind.

g.winogrand, Friday, 18 October 2002 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I like "Under the hedge," but not so much Quasi

Steph (Steph), Friday, 18 October 2002 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone hear ever record any of his shows (or chisel shows)?
