C or D: Wolf Eyes

Saw them live once and they were fan-fucking-tastic. Saw them live about 8 months later and they were godawful. Recorded, some of the stuff I'm into (the noisier, incoherent screaming stuff) and some of it kinda bores me (the more ambient electronic stuff.)

Opinions?

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 18 October 2002 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

their best proper LP = dread.

i've heard all the full-lengths and a few of the cassettes. none can recapture that first glimpse/listen i had of them. i say take your chances live. I've seen them twice and fell in love... O_o

see also: VIOLENT RAMP.

gygax!, Friday, 18 October 2002 02:18 (twenty-three years ago)

NO. NO. NO.

I saw them open for Sonic Youth. They were absolutely the worst band I have ever heard. Their music is like the holocaust^2. It was almost like a parody of art-rock bands. The amazingly annoying lyrics, the blowing on that stupid horn, the idiot guy who jumped up and down like he was really into it, even though he didnt really play an instrument.

Wolf Eyes are a horrible, horrible band.

David Allen, Friday, 18 October 2002 02:29 (twenty-three years ago)

wow... 14 million people were brutally murdered while they played their set?

hmmm...

maybe the guy really was into it even though he couldn't play an instrument. isn't that sort of the theory that Sonic Youth sort of started with? I'm not saying you should like it, but at least they're eliciting a response, which is more than could be said for a lot of the pap being made right now.

tinobeat (tinobeat), Friday, 18 October 2002 03:09 (twenty-three years ago)

oh wait, the holocaust *squared*, so 49 million people..

gosh, those guys must really be monsters.

tinobeat (tinobeat), Friday, 18 October 2002 03:10 (twenty-three years ago)

i just borrowed "Slicer" last night and thought it was a bit of a dud

just ambient noise. i heard they were supposed to sound like suicide or electro punk shit

but i've heard Dread is the one to get

JasonD, Friday, 18 October 2002 03:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Im gonna stick with my original opinion - worst atrocity mankind has ever produced.

It actually exceeds Freddy Got Fingered.

David Allen, Friday, 18 October 2002 03:36 (twenty-three years ago)

OMG

Jason D. how was your sandwich for lunch today?

guess who you borrowed SLICER from? i'll hook you up tomorrow with the real deal.

too funny...

dmv, Friday, 18 October 2002 03:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"dread" is it; after that this band has no need to justify their existence to _anyone_.

the self-titled and "fuck pete larsen" releases are also pretty tasty, i can't wait to hear "slicer." as for the american tapes stuff...inessential, but some of it is interesting, like the "black rat floods" and "dead mills" collections of clanky ghost factory concrete. sort of like the black dice/wolf eyes things amtapes released, actually.

your null fame (yournullfame), Friday, 18 October 2002 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

agreed on the dread and fuck pete larsen stuff. i dig the split with crack too.

i could understand why folks might not like this. expecting an oreo cookie, but getting cocoa, sugar, flour, and lard. it's like rock on it's side, with a beat.

msp, Friday, 18 October 2002 05:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Wolf Eyes carve away the meat.If you cant throb like Throbbing Gristle, don't bother.(ie: I likem lots) Great live, but I think I'd be more into seeing Violent Ramp. Skate or die

brg30 (brg30), Friday, 18 October 2002 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

They are a mixed bag live. Opening for Sonic Youth recently and for Bobby Conn last year (?) they were great, powerful noisy stuff. The two other times I saw them they seemed a little directionless and were boring. And besides, the one time they had to play after the Animal Collective at a gallery in Detroit and they couldn't come anywhere near the genius of those guys that night. Seen them in various solo set-ups and it was mixed as well.

Jeff Sumner, Friday, 18 October 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

and the total geek in me can't help but mention that 7,000,000 ^2 is 49,000,000,000,000 .... 49 trillion?

probably more people than there ever existed.

oh i'm a geek,
m.

msp, Friday, 18 October 2002 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

With The Locust and Arab on Radar, they were really good live. I can see how some people would get bored, but that kind of stuff keeps my attention.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 18 October 2002 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I picked up the split 12" with Andrew WK today--found it cheap at a local shop and heard it was out of print, so I figured I'd snatch it up. Not bad stuff at all. Some of it sounds a little tame, and I haven't really sat down and analyzed the lyrics yet...

But it makes me want to pick up more. Probably the "Dread" CD or the "Fuck Pete Larsen" LP since I've seen both of those around and mailorder is a hassle sometimes.

Can anyone tell me what exactly is on the "FPL" LP? I've heard that it's a compilation but what of? Cassette releases? Singles? Comp tracks?

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 18 October 2002 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Great great great live show, and I know zilch about their field of clatter...

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 18 October 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

the FPL LP is just two sides of droning noise - side B is the asscrusher, starting out with some nice shrieking and clattering.

three weeks pass...
Has anyone heard the two CDs that American Tapes currently has? Interminable Bleeding and Strangulation Tank. I'm a bit wary of ordering them, only because I know nothing about them. I could end up with two hours of crap.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

most of the wolf eyes stuff on amtapes is poorly recorded pots and pans banging and synth bleats. and yelling. i'm not insulting it, btw, i really like most of it. american tapes releases are frequently 'mixed' by john olson (ex-universal indians, currently in wolf eyes), which involves an old noisy tape delay, some razor blade editing and letting the tapes marinate in basement filth until they sound like melted flexi discs played at 16 rpm.

there are some really great releases on am tapes (yellow eyes, the universal indians LPs, dr. gretchen's musical weightlifting program) but they can be an endurance test if you're not 'feeling it.'

and if anyone has "thrist of the worm"...i'm up for a trade.

three weeks pass...
Has anyone heard Dead Hills yet? I've seen it at the store and pondered picking it up.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 8 December 2002 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Well Ian, Dead Hills sounds like some of my unreleased demos in the very extreme parts. There's a lot of quiet parts with a thumpy synth drum sound and lots of echoy noise and MITB-ish vocals. Every song has a thumping slow rhythm. The last song (of three), "Dead Tropics" is probably my favorite.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Sunday, 22 December 2002 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I enjoyed one of their songs, one of the times I've seen them. Otherwise I don't like them at all. (I seem to have inadvertantly seen them about a half-dozen times.)

Dave Fischer, Sunday, 22 December 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

"dead hills" pretty much sounds like "dread" part 2. long extended instrumental opener that, in my memory at least, features crickets chirping. two shorter songs with vocals a la "dread". running time, 23 minutes. worth every penny.

there was also an american tapes 3" CDR called "dead hills" that seems to bear little (if any) relation to the troubleman release.

all the Amtapes stuff is great - my recent favorites are all the Dead Machines cassettes (John with gal pal / Polyamory Records founder Tovah O'Rourke) and the Dead Comet Alive cdr. Best punk label ever? quite possibly...

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 6 March 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Wolf Eyes' "Dread" is the perfect soundtrack for a Michigan winter. Whether you're digging a path to your car, driving on ice in a blinding snowstorm, walking against a freezing wind, or wrestling with cabin fever, you'll find that Wolf Eyes fit seamlessly into the moment. Their music paints a picture of a greasy mound of black snow slowly melting on a salt-stained sidewalk.

When the spring begins, and you feel fully awake for the first time in months, and you're walking around in short sleeves reaquainting yourself with leaves and grass and sunlight, then you might want to listen to some different music. Right now, though, "Dread" sounds perfect.

EC, Thursday, 6 March 2003 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

picked up dead hills yesterday and it's reet, very throbbing gristle very bleek and industrial, nice RPG allusions a la every fucking US hardcore group out, nice skull art work reminds me of a skate board i used to have

what label is dread on?

schnell schnell, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a split release between Bulb, Hanson and American Tapes. Should still be available. It's a motherfucker.

hstencil, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I played Wolf Eyes (a tape of a track from 'Dread') for two friends who haven't heard much noise before. We had just smoked a lot of pot. One of them was unable to move and commented that he felt like monkeys were beating his skull in. It was pretty funny.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

the "dread" cd is 'on' bulb. the "dread" lp is 'on' american tapes+hanson, according to the back of it anyway. more interestingly and less pedantically, the LP is being reissued soon for vinylists.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

PEDANT ALERT: The CD I have has all three labels listed on the back.

hstencil, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i have THE LP, damn you! THE ORIGINAL VINYL! MY CRED = UNASSAILABLE.

incidentally, anyone who uses soulseek should look for the live 11.15.01 video and audio by wolf eyes, it's fucking great. as are the two CDRs ("half dogs" aka olson mix and untitled aka dilloway mix) i've seen around.

The show I saw of Oops! last summer kinda sucked (well, Wolf Eyes did.) I saw them a bit earlier at The Candle Factory in Providence (with Danse Asshole and Prurient) and they rocked the fuckin house, though.

Dread roolz. Slicer is less intense but also roolz.

revive! cos i've been listening to dread & the drumm/dilloway cassette a lot recently, and i've noticed some new (?) tapes on slsk recently (droll vol 12, dead at hemlock sf 3-27-03 etc). so what else is good?

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i stand by the wolf eyes "half dogs" and s/t cdrs - one mixed by dilloway, one by olson. and fucking MUGGER kicks your fucking ass.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dread" is fucking classic! even if only for "burn your house down". I haven't seen them live and it woun't happen any time soon, i'm depressed :(

Jrvision (visionjr), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

toby,
i was at that hemlock show, very different from the other 4 shows i've seen. the lights were on, dilloway and olson were laughing almost the whole show. very good, i'll look for it on slsk. the dolphins next to me were eeping in delight!

j0hn dwy3r was next to me talking loudly the entire show about (!!!) himself (!!!) imagine that gee whiz.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Wolf Eyes need to get they fool asses back down to Providence--we haven't seen 'em even remotely nearby since Oops! The Tour.

That said, Mugger rules, Dread rules, Slicer is pretty good, and they eat my fucking face live. Today, on my record shopping binge, I might pick up the split LP with Crack: We Are Rock if they still have it at Armageddon.

Ian Johnson, Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(is there a Faxed Head thread?)

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

well, it's the most revived thread ever for a reason

anyway, anybody feel the recentish wolf eyes lp on hospital, always wrong. i didn't, but am curious abt others' reactions. way too one-dimensionally shrill and grating for me, with none of the murky, gooey, tarpit throb that used to hold down the shriek & clatter. for some reason, i'm inclined to blame the shift on dominic fernow, as it sounds like a prurient-approved version of the band. honestly tho, i haven't liked much (any?) of the post dillo stuff.

the other is a black gay gentleman from Los Angeles (contenderizer), Thursday, 3 June 2010 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

I enjoy the emphasis on Nate's vocals - I like them higher in the mix. It's sort of a different band now, I agree (not a bad thing), but when I saw them a few months ago they were as murky, deranged and fucked up as ever.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Thursday, 3 June 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, they've remained very satisfying live, though it's been a while since i last saw em. and i love the emphasis on vocals and clearly structured songs, just wish the whole thing were recorded a little differently. total inversion of my reaction to my favorite WE records, which sound amazing and inviting, regardless of how unstructured and supposedly "harsh" the music is.

Saw them at Netil House last night...hahahahah they are SO SO SO CAMP live! I'd only ever seen Nate Young solo before and that was a really sombre, dark, slow set. This was him and John Olson wearing cut-off denim jackets and leather camps doing yr archetypal hype-macho stances for an hour. Louder than I thought was possible too. Their new guitarist dude is wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiild!

They were supported by Folkazoid (who would have been awesome if I was stoned and seventeen) and Porn (Thurston Moore and Bill Gould from Faith No More doing some kind of improv avant metal shit, was geat, Thurston spent the whole gig looking like he was about to blat every where. Ended with some crucial thrash shit) who were wicked.

Sad to not see a single ironic fist pump all night tho.

“My whole life” from their last album caught me recently, great stuff.

ten months pass...

Saw these guys for the first time in 20 years last night…what I remember from back then was more of an extreme blown out noise sound, but this time they had more of a non-Jazz Funk Throbbing Gristle vibe but with a louder background, kind of like Second Annual Report as played by 00s freaker basement show dudes. Looks like the tour’s wrapping up in a couple nights but I thought it was a good time.

They were definitely mellower last night then any time I'd seen them in the past (I didn't have to punch my way out of a riot 'natch) but the dubbier/weird vibe has been what the last few releases have been like, at least the ones I've heard

But I thought it was great, it is always great to see them

Funny thing about this gig which I didn't know until last night was that this was the gig that got them signed to Sub Pop, it was with Caroliner and it was in the foyer of some admin building and it was...not great
