can you judge a man by his record collection?

someone (for the purposes of this exercise he will remain nameless) recently gave me his entire vinyl record collection

(and a beautiful shiny transcriptor saturn turntable!)

(sorry i just really love it)

the collection consists of

*about 70% classical (brahms, beethoven, elgar, bartok, bach, mozart, mendelssohn, liszt etc. etc. including quite a few 78s)

and the rest is folk and pop. if i provide a profile of the collection can you provide a profile of the man? i'm too young/ignorant to understand the cultural significance of his record choices and i'd be interested to see what kind of picture they add up to and if they correspond to what i know about him...

here's a selection from the pop/folk box:

*the david grisman quartet (cover reads "they started calling them Dawg music, the weird tunes that were no longer bluegrass, not only jazz, tunes with a difference... the Dawg's own music.")

*kate and anna mcgarrigle - both the s/t and 'the dancer with bruised knees' lps

*roy orbison and kd lang

*henry cow - album with a picture of a plastic sock on it

*george brassens 'la mauvaise reputation'

*"the new pennywhistle album" (1978)

*"songs the french sing" by the french choral group of the university of melbourne

*the very best of leo sayer (god i wish i could show you the cover art from this one because it's reaching a level of 'wacky' i never thought possible)

*"the great herbie mann"

*ramatam

*frank zappa - hot rats

*lots of bob dylan

*lots of arlo guthrie

*2 or 3 steeleye span

*pheobe snow

*bob seger

*jj cale

*joni mitchell

*fairport convention

*joan armatrading

ok i think that should be enough...

let's see how accurate a representation of this guy you can piece together...

(i don't think they have npr in australia, although i might be wrong.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 18 October 2002 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

If he were American I'd say this:

My guess is that he's either around 40 years old or he's friends with a lot of 40-somethings. He thinks pop music is total shit. If he's young, he started out listening to stuff like Tori Amos (and he plays piano, hence the love of classical), but someone at his college radio station introduced him to Dylan and stuff on Hannibal, and now he fancies himself an aesthete. DEFINITELY a liberal, but probably not a vegetarian.

Jody Beth Rosen, Friday, 18 October 2002 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't know what npr is... :/

jess that album cover is too stylish and sober to be the one i'm talking about and doesn't have anything 'upside down' in it

minna (minna), Friday, 18 October 2002 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

National Public Radio.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 18 October 2002 04:04 (twenty-three years ago)

jim, that's uncanny.

minna (minna), Friday, 18 October 2002 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I tried to imagine what a cross between Arlo Guthrie and Frank Zappa might look like.

What in hell is he doing giving that poor girl a physical?

And where are the Mork suspenders?!?!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 18 October 2002 04:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course you can. If it has any Zappa, it's thumbs down for me. No matter what other records are in his collection.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 18 October 2002 05:32 (twenty-three years ago)

.... but Beefheart sings on Hot Rats!

stevie (stevie), Friday, 18 October 2002 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

if he has "amigo" by arlo guthrie than you know he was probably just another good guy

steve k, Friday, 18 October 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Sounds like a great guy to me. Except for the Bob Seger. How weird that his one really pop album is the Best of Leo Sayer. Was he big in Australia or something?

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 18 October 2002 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Leo keeps it real...real frizzy:

Too bad he didn't give you an LP-12 instead of that goofball looking thing, hehe...

Sean (Sean), Friday, 18 October 2002 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

jody beth is pretty close.

My guess is that he's either around 40 years old or he's friends with a lot of 40-somethings.

he's about 56

He thinks pop music is total shit.

yep, absolutely. he's always making presumptuous statements like "when you're older you'll get back into classical music"

and he plays piano, hence the love of classical

he plays the violin. he makes unexpected visits in the middle of the night having just driven 10 hours from a distant city and straight away gets me to accompny him for a stravinsky duet or whatever

he fancies himself an aesthete.

hehe

DEFINITELY a liberal, but probably not a vegetarian

yep. at my 21st birthday party he made a speech urging everyone to vote for the right (left) party. he's a buddhist and a diabetic but not a vegetarian.

just thought i'd tie this thread up!

Note to Tom: Bring back "Am I Cool or Not?"
