I know you left out Jerry Lee because of the previous poll--he wouldn't have done any better here. Still seems weird without him: Chuck/Jerry Lee/Little Richard are sort of attached at the hips for me.

clemenza, Thursday, 15 May 2014 18:05 (ten years ago) link

does seem weird, but felt like too much of a repeat keeping the low-scoring options in from last time... probably too much of a repeat already but I am curious to see how much having Elvis in the mix would change people's votes. Maybe not much.

I'd like to pick up an early Elvis comp ("Sunrise"?) but, man, that material is just overly familiar and played out for me, no matter how great it is.

i know its a well worn path, but elvis.

mark e, Thursday, 15 May 2014 19:21 (ten years ago) link

1. Chuck
2. Bo/Buddy
3. Little Richard/Elvis

Favourite song by each:

Chuck -- "Come On" or "Almost Grown"
Bo -- "Who Do You Love"
Buddy -- "Tell Me How"
Litte Richard -- "The Girl Can't Help It"
Elvis -- "(Marie's the Name) His Latest Flame" or "Mystery Train"

has to be elvis. '50s elvis alone wouldn't win against the others, maybe, but when you factor in elvis is back and from elvis in memphis and the comeback special, no contest.

the 'played out' early elvis stuff you're prob thinking of is the RCA stuff ('hound dog,' etc.). the sun material is much less familiar to most ppl, apart from a couple of songs, and still sounds just as fresh and magical as ever. i think the latest comp is 'elvis at sun.'

this to the power of x, where x = a f*ckin' big number.

I remember being pretty disappointed when I realized how short Elvis' tenure was at Sun Records. The way it's spoken of I had gotten the impression it was this huge body of classic work and really it's like, what, a dozen songs cut over a year and a half?

Οὖτις, Thursday, 15 May 2014 19:31 (ten years ago) link

as per j.d. says though, its not just the sun era the makes the legend ..

mark e, Thursday, 15 May 2014 19:42 (ten years ago) link

my favorite Elvis artifact is That's the Way It Was so no argument there

I think it's more like maybe more like 20+ songs total he cut at Sun, but yeah, maybe 12 or so of them are well-known from the "Sun Sessions" album. Million Dollar Quarter session was cut at Sun too.

I know a lot of people are boosting the late period Elvis stuff now - for good reason - but I still find something really exciting listening to the Sun Sessions.

It has this jittery energy and off-the-wall feel, but a real confidence to it too. It also feels like they are overtly experimenting - trying to perfect a mix of pop, country, blues, schmaltz, and r&b - in a much different way than the others here (or other greats like Johnny Cash), who all had their own signature style and sound that they experimented within. This was discussed a bit on the other poll thread, but the Sun Sessions is more about synthesis of styles, the band behind him, and Sam Phillips' input - while the others are more auteur-like, maybe?

Elvis is more important than enjoyable to me -- I'll vote Chuck. (I gave one vote to Chuck and one to Bo after the server reset in the last poll.)

Love Sun Elvis -- the tension and mystery are unparalleled -- but can't get with a lot of RCA 50s (and especially 60s) Elvis. Love the comeback and 1969 records, but the 70s TCB Band era is just so unfuckwithable. I posted this on the other 50s rockers thread, but he had completely mastered his voice, this incredible instrument that he knew how to exploit the fuck out of every nuance.

Still might vote for Bo, though.

Rock and roll music, if you like it, if you feel it, you can't help but move to it.

wow the band is bouncing off the walls on that take of hunk of love, sounds like fistfuls of speed were going down that day

brio, Friday, 16 May 2014 16:57 (ten years ago) link

That's hot, indeed. Is there an Elvis comp that's ballad-free? I love his rockin' material much more.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 17 May 2014 22:34 (ten years ago) link

"Reconsider, Baby" ?

Depends what you mean by 'ballads' obv.

Mark G, Saturday, 17 May 2014 22:48 (ten years ago) link

The old "Rocker" comps from the 80s, but by today's standards they're skimpy (only 10-12 tracks on each). There is a recent-ish Elvis budget set, but it focuses on covers of Rock songs.

lonely jerry lee voter from the first poll here. going with richard because late elvis is excluded from consideration. otherwise it would have been closer.

late elvis is excluded from consideration

I scanned through the thread, and I don't think it says that anywhere.

clemenza, Sunday, 18 May 2014 22:00 (ten years ago) link

one reason the sun sessions are so good is that even the ballads feel different from later elvis, there's a purity and un-forced innocence to them that couldn't be farther from the approach elvis took to things like 'are you lonesome tonight' (which i also love). 'harbor lights' is probably in my top 10 elvis songs.
