In 1993 Tommy Boy put out a 10-disc series of what its archivists (or whoever) considered the greatest freestyle songs up to that point. Let us poll them, one by one, starting with the first—which is strong, but maybe not the strongest? Time to find out!

"Silent Morning," sung in Noel's torpid, lugubrious English, is my pick. But, wow, it's close. Runners-up:

Cover Girls, "Show Me"
Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, "I Wonder If I Take You Home"
Sweet Sensation, "Hooked On You"
Nayobe, "Please Don't Go"

WHERE IS COMPANY B?

Didn't make it past "One Way Love"; TKA 4ever. Could have voted for any of the first four (I think I've got all the 12"s!); greatest series of comps ever.

is it wrong that i'm already crazy anticipating the winners poll in this series?

"one way love" just towers over this comp imo, which is not meant in the least as a slight - every song on this is awesome

'tender heart' is the sleeper on this volume, but i had to go 'show me'

I like this series a lot, but I prefer the more compact and diverse Perfect Beats set. Can there be too much Latin Freestyle? 10 discs pushes it a bit.

"I Wonder If I Take You Home" is possibly the greatest record of the 1980s, so that. But "Hooked on You" has that amazing breakdown with the vocal sampling that still rocks my world. And "No Reason to Cry" is one of my all-time favorite vocal performances in freestyle.

When it comes to freestyle, the more dramatic and serious the better, therefore "Silent Morning".

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I missed that "I Wonder If I Take You Home" was on the list. It's the best track on here, but it kind of goes beyond Freestyle.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 00:14 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, that and "The Mexican" are the oldest tracks here, both having been recorded in 1984. You can still hear the breakbeat/electro orientation of those tracks as much as you hear freestyle, which was not quite in full flower yet.

three weeks pass...

I absolutely adore 'Running', which is more proto-freestyle as far as I have read.
