Dog Latin asked this on another thread but all he came up with was Electric Wizard.(yes they had 90s output but have been great throughout the years)
Yes there has been some good or decent bands but we are looking for GREAT bands.
I would add Jesu.
Who else?

Esoteric have touched greatness in this period. Need to listen to Caina a bit more too
― verhzleyavbtreleambreb (imago), Friday, 16 May 2014 22:29 (eleven years ago)
yeah I think of Esoteric as 90s too but they have been great in the 00s too.biffy clyro need to jump off a cliff
― ۩, Friday, 16 May 2014 22:30 (eleven years ago)
I like Caina a lot but they aren't 'Great'. (not yet anyway good to see Andy back making Caina music again tho)
― ۩, Friday, 16 May 2014 22:31 (eleven years ago)
UK metal bands who have been great during these years, or great new metal bands from the UK in the last 15 years?
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 16 May 2014 22:33 (eleven years ago)
I was more looking for the latter but it seems everyones including the former. What we dont need is people posting Iron Maiden or Black Sabbath.
― ۩, Friday, 16 May 2014 22:36 (eleven years ago)
idk the music of biffy clyro all but their name and apparent popularity among the most reactionary of britrock dorks makes them intrinsically amusing

I think Caina was pretty damn great, as is Jesu. I'd throw 40 Watt Sun in there, and Rose Kemp. As far as the former, Cathedral did some of their best (and worst) work over that time frame.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 16 May 2014 22:44 (eleven years ago)
If you include Warning with 40 Watt Sun then definitely. I like Rose Kemp a lot but not sure if it qualifies as great. Maybe im setting the bar too high since genuinely great bands like Sabbath/zep/maiden/carcass etc dont come along too often.
Since it was dog latins idea then we should let him decide.
Maybe we should extend it to 1990 (like skots American metal thread) so we can include Cathedral, Fudge Tunnel et al
― ۩, Friday, 16 May 2014 23:02 (eleven years ago)
oh we're all agreed Electric Wizard >>> Sabbath by now, surely ;)
― verhzleyavbtreleambreb (imago), Friday, 16 May 2014 23:55 (eleven years ago)
Electric Wizard's Come My Fanatics... was great, Dopethrone was a self-indulgent bore, Let Us Prey was mildly diverting, and everything since has been a slog.

You still have Bolt Thrower and Carcass putting out great stuff in the last 15 years.
― jmm, Saturday, 17 May 2014 00:04 (eleven years ago)
the sad thing is imago means what he says and isnt joking
― ۩, Saturday, 17 May 2014 00:20 (eleven years ago)
let's post the best UK metal songs from the last 15 years
this might be number 1

just...unbelievable, really. stunning.
― verhzleyavbtreleambreb (imago), Saturday, 17 May 2014 00:32 (eleven years ago)
uh
it turned out that the answer was anaal nathrakh.
Have there been any great British metal bands since the golden age of...NWOBHM?
― scott seward, Saturday, 17 May 2014 01:07 (eleven years ago)
I thought I had done a thread before but wasn't sure. Oh well, this ones for the new millennium anyway. Must go read that thread though
― ۩, Saturday, 17 May 2014 02:08 (eleven years ago)
Pagan Altar & Hell belong more in that other thread yet they didnt release any albums til after 2000?
I guess it counts. Both are great anyway
― ۩, Saturday, 17 May 2014 02:11 (eleven years ago)
Esoteric have ben around too long to fall under "last 15 years", Anaal Nathrakh is the only one I'd really consider "great". But Arsaidh/Saor, Winterfylleth, A Forest Of Stars, Uncle Acid, Fen, The Meads Of Asphodel, Warning, Forefather - all enjoyable bands.

This, of course, is where I mention Thumpermonkey, albeit towards the prog end of metal
but, like,

dearth of skyscrapingly GREAT UK great metal bands arriving in the 2000s - as to compete w sabbath, maiden, motorhead, carcass, e-wiz, etc - seems hard to deny. like not only appreciated by the diehard faithful, but also popular & influential in a somewhat broader sense. i mean, i enjoy uncle acid, but they've got a long way to go in terms of establishing something substantial. jesu seems a reasonable call, provided you accept metal's evolution into angelic shoegaze. can't really comment on anal nathy, out of my comfort zone. hmm...
― katsu kittens (contenderizer), Saturday, 17 May 2014 10:20 (eleven years ago)
lol thumpermonkey are nowhere near great
hahahaha
― ۩, Saturday, 17 May 2014 14:51 (eleven years ago)
Nobody's gonna stump for Evile, huh?
― Humorist (horse) (誤訳侮辱), Saturday, 17 May 2014 15:21 (eleven years ago)
Pretty damn hard to compare to Sabbath, Maiden and Motorhead, but I dig Orange Goblin. They got a cool mix of different styles. They have probably also been around a bit longer than 15 years too.
― earlnash, Saturday, 17 May 2014 17:48 (eleven years ago)
Hasn't there been a dearth of GREAT UK metal since the late 80s?
― overwhelmed with sweat (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 17 May 2014 18:05 (eleven years ago)
i liked this album a lot but i don't know if they are still around:

― scott seward, Saturday, 17 May 2014 18:32 (eleven years ago)
OK I guess some of the Earache post-grind bands were great, obviously, but trying to think of UK thrash metal bands that rated at all...
Indesinence sounds cool.
― overwhelmed with sweat (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 17 May 2014 18:34 (eleven years ago)
i have always dig hey colossus too but they are more sludge or whatever.

"dug"
it should also be noted that necro deathmort - who are from the u.k. - are my favorite group of any genre of the last 10 years or so. i can't think of anyone that i like more. they make techno-doom. and their new album is pretty much all techno with no doom. but they say their next album is gonna be their heaviest yet.

Seems like we can name plenty of decent or good bands but not so much "great"
― ۩, Saturday, 17 May 2014 18:47 (eleven years ago)
well, great britain had 20 years of true undeniable rock greatness (1964-1984) and then things started to wind down on the island. wimple winch to ned's atomic dustbin says a lot about the rise and fall of empire. though you did get that last gasp of great grind/death/doom into the 90's.
― scott seward, Saturday, 17 May 2014 19:21 (eleven years ago)
ugh neds atomic dustbin, carter usm, kingmaker a real nadir... until the next nadir anyway of britpop... then landfill
