ADMIN: How did you find ILM?

Especially if you started posting in the last year? ESPECIALLY if you started posting after the move from Greenspun? I know this has been asked before but I wanted to get some idea of how people are arriving here and I thought a shiny new thread might help.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 18 October 2002 08:13 (twenty-three years ago)

i spotted a link to freaky trigger in a weblog and clicked on it cos it had the name of the 2nd Win album and found my way to ILX from there

leigh (leigh), Friday, 18 October 2002 08:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I found ILM a couple of times while googling, long before I ever posted. The first time I found it, I saw that thread about the Kid A cover art and I remember being a bit peeved. Found Freaky Trigger much much later, and then actually started posting on ILM.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 18 October 2002 08:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I clicked on the link on NYLPM. I probably arrived there via Josh blog.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 18 October 2002 08:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i read something by simon reynolds, ended up at his website, and ended up here.

Honda, Friday, 18 October 2002 08:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Used to frequent the Greenspun Æon Flux board. I recall sighting this place periodically, gauging various impressions from the discussions (mostly intimidating)... this went on for at least a year before I finally decided to bookmark the URL.

gazuga (gazuga), Friday, 18 October 2002 08:47 (twenty-three years ago)

a google search for 'sigur ros.'

dk, Friday, 18 October 2002 09:02 (twenty-three years ago)

through Freaky Trigger / NYLPM obviously. But first I found these sites thanks to Alistair on Tangents.

luke (luke), Friday, 18 October 2002 09:10 (twenty-three years ago)

rockcritics.com led to FT/nylpm, and eventually ilm

H (Heruy), Friday, 18 October 2002 09:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Through the Dutch magazine Oor. I visited Freaky Trigger and then clicked on ILM.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 18 October 2002 09:22 (twenty-three years ago)

It kept coming up on various Google searches I kept making.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 18 October 2002 09:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Reynolds' links page.

david h (david h), Friday, 18 October 2002 09:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I found Freaky Trigger several years ago, new to the web and looking for intelligent pop writing. I think I was looking for something on someone - Talk Talk - and the then search engine of choice found FT. I popped back from time to time.

One of those times was this year, newly excited by online discussions but not expecting to find you ran one, But you did, and I stayed.

In other words, I came in via your old URL.

jon (jon), Friday, 18 October 2002 09:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i came in through the links section on the careless talk costs lives website.
i lurked during the last weeks at the greenspuns, started posting on the new site.

joan vich (joan vich), Friday, 18 October 2002 09:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Read Tom's Top 100 Singles of the 90s, liked what I read so clicked on his site.

Nick H, Friday, 18 October 2002 09:51 (twenty-three years ago)

from a link to AICON on Rose Plaza.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 18 October 2002 10:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i found I Hate Music 1st but i can't remember how

dz (doorag), Friday, 18 October 2002 10:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Via the Killmusic board, I think.

Jez (Jez), Friday, 18 October 2002 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

via tom's top 100 singles too (i can't remember how i found that - slow day at work probably). lurked at greenspun and started posting when it moved over. probably because having the 'contribute' section at the bottom of the thread made the whole thing seem much easier (i'd never done the message board thing before).

it's nice to be here, by the way.

adam b (adam b), Friday, 18 October 2002 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

About May/June - Googled a term used in an old ('77) Jon Savage article which linked to an archived thread here about him.(Had been doing this search every few months for years, but using shit search engines, obv)

Then it was like 'OH-MY-GAWD what IS this place?'

And I've been struggling for sleep/work-productivity ever since.

(Had never known/read blogs or webzines before finding this site.)

Ray M (rdmanston), Friday, 18 October 2002 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

same as nathalie

willem (willem), Friday, 18 October 2002 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

mt, Friday, 18 October 2002 12:44 (twenty-three years ago)

google

boxcubed (boxcubed), Friday, 18 October 2002 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Jez - surely you were the one who first mentioned ILM to the Killmusic massive? Although it may possibly have been Alexander Blair.

I found it through Freakytrigger about 18 months ago, and FT was mentioned to me as part of a list of music related sites that a friend sent me.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 18 October 2002 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

google search for "disco inferno" --> tom & ned best of 90s lists ---> freaky trigger & nylpm --> ilx.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 18 October 2002 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

google.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 October 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

People mentioning ILM on the unoffical Pitchfork webboard, which I used to read. (note: this was still in the Greenspun days)

o. nate (onate), Friday, 18 October 2002 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Vic Funk used to post links to silly and/or heated ILM threads on the Greenspun board over at the FMBB (when he was still posting at both ILM and the FMBB).

paul cox (paul cox), Friday, 18 October 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

CTCL.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 18 October 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I found Freaky Trigger from Ned's "136 best albums of the 90s" list but I've no idea how I found that.
I've been reading stuff on Freaky Trigger for ages, but only just started looking at this ILM stuff today.
Dangerous - how the bloody hell am I going to get any work done now?

James Ball, Friday, 18 October 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

first googling "Igor Wakhevitch"
then googling "LCD Soundsystems" and arriving at Jess's blog, which led me here

JasonD, Friday, 18 October 2002 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

google search for something-or-other unearthed tom's singles list and led me to ft/nylpm and the greenspun site.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 18 October 2002 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

The Momus website.

Like Ray M, I'd never encountered blogs before. And just a few webzines.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 18 October 2002 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt C., Friday, 18 October 2002 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I think i found it about a year or so ago whil searching for info about some crap band or other. I have a good amount of free time here at work but not as much as some of you all.

g (graysonlane), Friday, 18 October 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

i think we can all say "thank you google"

g (graysonlane), Friday, 18 October 2002 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I found Freaky Trigger from Ned's "136 best albums of the 90s" list but I've no idea how I found that.

Subliminal suggestions on my part. Actually, I'd be curious, how DID you find that? Any guesses?

Dangerous - how the bloody hell am I going to get any work done now?

Heh heh heh. Welcome to us.

As for me, here since the start, so I'm no good for Tom's purposes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 October 2002 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Googling for "definition of pop music."

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 18 October 2002 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I might've found it from a search for someone included in the list, but I can't remember who. Or, I've got a bookmark for something called rocklist which is dead now - could've been from there. I'm a bit of an anorak for best album lists.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 18 October 2002 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

you didnt meet me on a bus!!! you met me on the street!

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 17 July 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I was googling "crowsdell". Had seen it before while googling something else.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Thursday, 17 July 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I found ILM around a year ago searching for album reviews.

earlnash, Thursday, 17 July 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

thru Simon Reynolds' blog, natch. 'Twas a link to a thread on people bitching about white boy hip hop authenticity or some such.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 17 July 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"Turn left at Greenland."

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 17 July 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I always liked how somebody actually named a nightclub "Arthur".

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 17 July 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't entirely remember. I know I first found it about a year ago, thought it looked interesting, but then forgot about it for a while. Possibly through Josh blog. How I found Josh is another mystery.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 17 July 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

suzy -- who's almost entirely on ile now, i think -- invited me.

bucky wunderlick (bucky), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

M-m-me-thinks... I was Googlin' for Mark S and Frnak Kogan, and then - finding references to ILM also - I recalled that one of my bestest friends (who hi'self keeps on lurkin', on and off) had already mentioned this space.
Must've been around last Xmas that I started paying attention more closely.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i first found it through the lovely tanya headon but forgot about it. then the last plane to jakarta review of "ignition" reminded me and sold me on it.

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 17 July 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

robin (robin), Thursday, 17 July 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Blame Ned.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw man!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually read the Da Capo thing before I ever came here, and thought it was interesting, but I didn't start reading or posting here until I read a thing on Simon Reynolds' blog about SFJ's indie-whiteness thread a couple of months ago. Incidentally, I found the Reynolds blog through rockcritics.com, which I think I may have found by blindly typing "rockcritics.com" into my server window, not knowing if anything would come up.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

it makes me fucking shudder that someone read that da capo thing...period

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 18 July 2003 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Google search for the word for those japanese girls that try to look like baywatch extras led to momus site led here which filled the gap left by giving up reading music magazines...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 18 July 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Not online! I ran into Pete Scholtes as he was researching his "Scream" piece for the Chicago Reader. He had a long print-out of ILM responses to work from. The next day, I signed up.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Friday, 18 July 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I was searching for "Oum Khaltoum" I believe.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 July 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

praying mantis (praying mantis), Friday, 18 July 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I clicked on a link from Momus' website.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 18 July 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Damo Suzuki himself turned me onto it.

ben welsh (benwelsh), Friday, 18 July 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate was rambling on about it on a mail list. I lurked around till Doom Patrol slagged off Sloan.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 18 July 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I was sniffing glue in Florida with Meadowlark Lemon, when he said - "hey, let's go for a swim" ..blah blah blah, long story short .. I couldn't stop sneezing... and that's how I found ILM.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 18 July 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

another for the momus site.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Friday, 18 July 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

egosurfing at work (boring, horrible, endless work) I found a thread about a record I put out. three posts (ranging from unconvinced to indifferent) before the thread instantly died. love you guys. the conversational nature of ILM (very different from any other mailing list or newsgroup) & range of subjects covered had me hooked at once, 'dumitrescu s/d' fucking yes.

jl (Jon L), Friday, 18 July 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

wow. my thread on dumitrescu got you in here. that's great to hear (unless someone else did a thread on him).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 July 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

no it was yours. hi julio.

jl (Jon L), Friday, 18 July 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

hi there. well that thread was only and by two/three ppl so a bit of a disaster but at least you got in through that, which is ace. this does remind me that i have bought some more of his stuff since then and that i need to do a revive after some more listening.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 July 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

go revive, I've bought 3 or 4 more since then myself. (if you can find the thread, the new google search is admittedly faster but unfortunately does not seem to work, on anything)

just to cement my humiliation, it was base egosurfing that got me in but the fringe threads that hooked me. 2-3 knowledgable people is all it takes...

jl (Jon L), Friday, 18 July 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a refugee from the alt.fan.momus newsgroup.

J (Jay), Friday, 18 July 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

''go revive, I've bought 3 or 4 more since then myself. (if you can find the thread, the new google search is admittedly faster but unfortunately does not seem to work, on anything)''

yeah i'll revive when i've listened. 2-3 is good but its kind of lonely out esp bcz everyone should be getting down to 'galaxy' ;)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 July 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got a few Dumitrescu things I need to relisten to. I think I owe contributions to about 5 threads now.... *sigh*

Maybe this weekend I can get some listening done.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 18 July 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

hey diamond i think 3 of those are mine surely ;)

I'm working all weekend so i doubt how much listening i'll be doing. but i still might do another thread that gets 5 ans.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 July 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, yeah Julio I owe you a few.

Yeah, well, I used to feel bad about starting threads that only got 5 answers, but then I just realized, you know, this place is about indie rock. I mean, I started a thread about Quincey Jones - Quincey fucking Jones!! - and it got like 3 replies. Meanwhile they are about 20 A.R.E. Weapons threads. Laughable.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 18 July 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

*wnts to go 'n search for that Q'Jones thread*
(*recalls the threads 'bout the altered "search" fankshn*)
(*decides to give 't a try anyhoo*)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 18 July 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

In the end i don't really care if a thread gets five ans bcz there are some nice contributors who listen to lots and have interesting things to say so hurrah!

but yeah its funny when you think shit like are weapons gets fuck knows how many threads (as search is fucked i can't tell you how many, maybe that's a good thing).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 July 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

*gives up search, frustrated*
*curses copiously inna coupla finno-ugric languages*
