Africa/Brass. On some days it's my favorite Coltrane record.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 22 May 2014 02:59 (eleven years ago)

Great year for Jazz, but Bobby Bland is rightly ranked #1.

I love Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments," but My Favorite Things easily (for the title track, yes). My birth year--lots of great pop singles, but I guess nothing special in albums. Patsy Cline had an album with both "Crazy" and "I Fall to Pieces."

judy garland over gil evans

balls, Friday, 23 May 2014 01:16 (eleven years ago)

I like about 10 of these and need to hear the ones I haven't

I might have to break my rule of voting for Gil Evans in any poll where Gil Evans is an option, because

man these jazz choices are tough

Probably gonna go with George Russell -- that's such an amazing record, and he's pretty underrated.

free jazz over bobby

g simmel, Friday, 23 May 2014 16:38 (eleven years ago)

I read somewhere that Free Jazz was not Ornette's title -- Atlantic (possibly Nesuhi Ertegun) came up with it -- and he always hated it (the title, not the record).

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 23 May 2014 16:47 (eleven years ago)

Love the Bobby Bland. Don't know the others too well

John Coltrane was prolific wasn't he?

Olé Coltrane also came out in '61 - that would get my vote if it had made the list but as it is I'll go with My Favorite Things.

it actually came out in 1962 and will be on next years list.

Voted Gil but apparently 1961 is ground zero for jazz records liked by me.
