yeah, so I picked up the compilation by the Numero Group and his 2nd and 3rd LPs (Hard Candy and Prone, from 76 and 79 respectively)

this is hitting a lot of spots I sort of forgot I had... I guess the best comparison is Robert Palmer but other obvious ones are Hall & Oates and later Steely Dan. and some of the funkier singer-songwriters from the period. all done with great toons and tons of assurance/competence. and this shit is engineered beautifully. (produced by steve cropper btw.)

i would give this a pretty fucking high recommend if it sounds like your kind of thing.

I had no idea Doheny co-wrote "A Love Of Your Own" (Average White Band) and "Whatcha Gonna Do For Me" (Chaka Khan). This is a good comp, but if you don't like that smooth L.A. sound of the 70's, then this won't do much for you.

I love smooth seventies and think Doheny sounds like garbage. Reminds me a bit of when Pacific Ocean Blue was championed a few years ago.

Garbage? Nah. I didn't think the Dennis Wilson lived up to its legend. But Doheny's comp was a good find.

Heard the album today. I can't get past his wisp of a voice. "To Prove My Love" is recommended to Boz fans though.

this stuff is not really like pacific ocean blue, which is a weird, instinctive record. it's also not like the eagles in that it has some groove. the voice is pretty weird tho. reserving further judgment for now.

my glib POB analogy was to another seventies studio rock album whose creator couldn't sing. Not entirely fair.

boy is his voice thin, but the overall production and music hits a sweet spot i was pretty damn sure i didn't even have.

yeah i'm not gonna rep it as some huge lost masterpiece but it's been on steady rotation

people, you should be recommending even more obscure (but good) stuff in this vein: '70s socal (or sounds-like-socal) blue-eyed soul that stays current, has singer-songwriter elements...

don't think this is obscure but Bobby Caldwell's Cat in the Hat album hits the same spot for me

actually i'm not going to apologize for liking this dude a lot, i think the 2nd LP and parts of the 1st and 3rd are genuinely great, whatever his limitations as a singer. "a love of your own" is a beautiful song.
