GG Allin: Classic or Dud?

Good shit or bad shit? And please don't restrict yourself to the bloody music...

Venga, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dud. His band was sometimes catchy, though. Too bad they never were properly recorded.

, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm tempted to title him "classic" for his sheer petulance and unwavering dedication to putting his money where his mouth was (let alone several other dreadful things that one shouldn't put anywhere near one's mouth). I mean, let's face it...in terms of being completely over-the-top at all times (if that's your thing), the man can never be accused of going soft. He walked it like he talked it, despite the fact that what he talked was hardly an admirable line to walk.

That said, "Die When You Die" off the no-home-should-be-without album, FREAKS FAGGOTS DRUNKS & JUNKIES does indeed have a semblance of a hook that's actually hummable and, dare I suggest, pretty "rockin'."

Still, to reduce your life to such a cartoonish punchline as our GG did is largely pretty tragic.

alex in nyc, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The absolute biggest fucking dud. That anyone would pay attention to a fucking psycho rapist like him contributed to a great deal of my disgust with that try-and-top-that punk-rock-outrage mentality. It's really fucking weak.

Patrick, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just for the fact that he repeatedly failed to kill himself on stage, and then went on to die a cliched rock and roll overdose death, total dud.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Video evidence (as if anyone needed it) reveals that Mr. Allin had a remarkably small penis. Unless I saw some post-castration artifact, which I guess isn't out of the question. But his Sally Jesse Raphael appearance is classic. And some of the music is pretty entertaining.

Kris, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For those who really want to know more:

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I'm with Patrick on this one. Iggy had something in his show that I could relate to occasionally, ie. something inside me that wanted to cover myself in tin foil and peanut butter and pick fights with bikers. I've never really had the urge to throw feces at people or sexually assault women. Dud.

Dave M., Tuesday, 15 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

His music is so fucking terrible, but also so very beside the point. I have to admit I get a kick out of G.G., more so when he was still alive & would promise to kill himself on stage every year. I found Hated very, very entertaining; loved that concert footage, where a show would last like 90 seconds before he assaulted somebody and the cops broke up the place. What a bizarre ritual. Isn't it kind of fun to see certain punk ideals taken to their logical extreme in such an artless way? I enjoy it.

What's great is how serious he takes himself, thinking himself some dangerous, visionary artist and all, when he is in fact one of the biggest morons of all time. classic (note small C).

Mark, Tuesday, 15 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Frankly, if you really want some infantile joys without all the further baggage, then, as I never cease to let people know, the answers can be found in the Raunchy Young Lepers:

FUCK everyone, GG was better than anyone

buck shot, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i would say classic since, as noted above, he did walk the walk. in that sense there was a sort of purity to him that you rarely find among artists.

can anyone wise in the ways of psychology tell me why preppy-ish all-american type women would throw themselves at him? some really did; he sort of brags about it in interviews, and my friend witnessed said behavior prior to and during a gg show. like, this law school student was gazing at him raptly, earnestly talking about how she was madly in love with him..."gg, i want to have your babies", that kind of thing. what's that all about?

Dallas Yertle (Dallas Yertle), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic in theory. Dud in practice.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

If it was all an act, genious/classic. If it was real, freak/dud.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

if it was an act it would have been dud. think about it. the guy shit onstage. assuming you could credibly fake stuff like that, it would just be corny (oops, probably not the best word choice, there)

it was all too real, though, hence classic.

Dallas Yertle (Dallas Yertle), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Acting like an asshole -> classic. Being an asshole -> dud.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree that strictly speaking, being an asshole is dud. hell, acting like one generally is, too. but gg was beyond strict categories...i mean he seemed almost to emobdy some primal cosmic force that demands expression. he was transgression personified. he was a fucking animal, while people like iggy sometimes sorta played at being one. as far as i know about gg, he was absolutely unconcerned with any societal/cultural norms/values...except insofar as he was determined to break all the taboos.

Dallas Yertle (Dallas Yertle), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

best line I've ever seen in a wikipedia entry:

"Allin retreated to a cabin in New Hampshire where he wrote what he considered to be his first masterpiece, Eat My Fuck."

Shushtari (res), Sunday, 12 October 2008 15:08 (sixteen years ago)

'You Hate Me and I Hate You' is a great, great song, it's seriously a punk rock masterpiece. GG's singing on it sounds fresh and un-rehearsed and there is an unbeatable spirit to it that is a perfect exemplar of exactly what punk rock is, or, if you're generous, what Rock And Roll was supposed to be. A great song which I first heard on 'Louder and Faster - Hardcore Punk Vol. 1'. GG said something on Sally Jessy or Geraldo like "I am the gun, my music is the bullet, and the audience is the victim' and also 'I am Rock and Roll'. For these reasons, GG is classic, despite his deplorable life.

Chelvis, Monday, 13 October 2008 07:54 (sixteen years ago)

You Hate Me and I Hate You

Chelvis, Monday, 13 October 2008 07:57 (sixteen years ago)

the talk show thing is the only part that confuses me about this guy....

haven't you all heard? (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Monday, 13 October 2008 16:45 (sixteen years ago)

although the line, "If you got kids, those kids are gonna be my kids!" is kinda cool

haven't you all heard? (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Monday, 13 October 2008 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

Dud. GG Allin and Lenny Kravitz belong in the same subset: people who think music equals posturing.

Vision, Monday, 13 October 2008 20:27 (sixteen years ago)

people who think music equals posturing.

as much as GG's violent and disgusting schtick may have been some kind of bizarre act, it would appear that he lived that act more than similar people who aren't acting.

You Hate Me and I Hate You is indeed absolutely classic.

Has me interested in tracking down some more of the early stuff, and looks like it's been recnetly comped with a bunch of the earlier stuff he did with the Jabbers, Wayne Kramer etc. on an album of the same name.

GG is a creep and a dud.

i'm shy (Abbott), Friday, 6 February 2009 19:16 (sixteen years ago)

At least he was real. He chose a path for himself and went with it. Most people would agree the path was wrong, but it was HIS path.

StanM, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

dude kinda inhabits both the classic and and dud realms simultaneously.

circa1916, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:45 (sixteen years ago)

but it was HIS (socio)path.

Ricky Apples (Pillbox), Friday, 6 February 2009 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

agree with abbott, but also with stan. i mean, he was a creep and a dud and a gross delusional fuckhead and all the wrong people admire him, but he's also pretty much the only one of his kind (in pop, anyway). he did something that would otherwise not have been done. plus the music does sometimes touch the power. i guess he's classic because nothing that anyone says about him can compete on any level with what he actually did.

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Friday, 6 February 2009 19:56 (sixteen years ago)

GG = classic, classic, classic. A necessary antidote to "musical geniuses" and "poptimism".

jkfu (libcrypt), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:15 (sixteen years ago)

You guys would ban him in a heartbeat. You know, if he posted here.

OldHamSweat, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:15 (sixteen years ago)

If you have not fled in fear from GG in a club, you truly have not lived.

jkfu (libcrypt), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

I respect that GG took the nihilistic aspect of punk to its logical extreme & showed Sid Vicious who's who, even it was only to serve as a warning to the kids about pursuing that end.

Ricky Apples (Pillbox), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:19 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, and I saw him get blown by a 15 year old boy once. Classic?

OldHamSweat, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:20 (sixteen years ago)

Only if little GG was covered in GG poo.

jkfu (libcrypt), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

I respect that GG took the nihilistic aspect of punk to its logical extreme & showed Sid Vicious who's who, even it was only to serve as a warning to the kids about pursuing that end.

There was no rhyme, reason, purpose or point to GG Allin. There were no lessons to be learned. There is no rational slot in our world into which he fit. He had no reason for existing.

jkfu (libcrypt), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

^ one way to say "classic"

OldHamSweat, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

OldHamSweat, are you NewBeefLover?

StanM, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

I am sooooo glad that GG died before he was turned into irony.

jkfu (libcrypt), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

Me? I would never act like that twat. I am offended.

OldHamSweat, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:30 (sixteen years ago)

Hmm. :-)

StanM, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

Though I must say, NewBeefLover seems like an alright fella. A little abrasive, but kindhearted all the same. Where is he now?

OldHamSweat, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:32 (sixteen years ago)

There was no rhyme, reason, purpose or point to GG Allin. There were no lessons to be learned. There is no rational slot in our world into which he fit. He had no reason for existing. - right, so he personified the concept of nihilism, and the possibility that he did so unconsciously or unintentially and not affectedly made him a sort of ideal, the attainment of which would be impossible for most who would try to seek it, b/c they would be doing so self-consciously. Not that there's any glory in what GG was, mind you. Quite the opposite IMO.

Ricky Apples (Pillbox), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:37 (sixteen years ago)

Let us forgive the deceased NewBeefLover and try to remember some decent things about him. Everyone has good points. His were just a tad more obscured. Back to G.G.

OldHamSweat, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

I thought I saw you get banned by a 15 year old mod, is why I'm asking. But I was mistaken, apparently. Apologies.

StanM, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

Sydney Poitier or G.G. Allin? Who would you rather have a beer with?

OldHamSweat, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)

I would rather GG not come to dinner.

Ricky Apples (Pillbox), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:40 (sixteen years ago)

he might shit on the roast.

Ricky Apples (Pillbox), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:40 (sixteen years ago)

Although I am not the ominous NewBeefLover I do have a certain fondness for his approach. It's fitting that this discussion is taking place in the G.G. Allin thread. Forgive him, even though he knows what he do.

OldHamSweat, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

Not dinner. A beer.

OldHamSweat, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:42 (sixteen years ago)

I'll take a 50yo single-malt w/ Sydney & a half-gallon of Early Times and some Hamm's with GG.

Ricky Apples (Pillbox), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:45 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, and I saw him get blown by a 15 year old boy once. Classic?

uh, no

i'm shy (Abbott), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:48 (sixteen years ago)

I saw ____________________ by a 15 year old boy = new ILX meme.

jkfu (libcrypt), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:50 (sixteen years ago)

I read some interview with him in Rollerderby which was defs steeped in irony – the ladies all treating him like he was Tiny Tim.

i'm shy (Abbott), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

If GG had lived long enough to come out with a line of poo pets, for instance, that'd be the kind of irony I mean.

jkfu (libcrypt), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

lol poo pets

kamerad, Saturday, 14 March 2009 13:59 (sixteen years ago)

People like him because he's the one example of nihilism taken all the way to its conclusion. And what he did could never be repeated now, because information travels so much faster. If YouTubes of him grabbing women from the audience and pulling them around by their hair were posted while he was actually on tour, that would be the end of him (which would be a good thing).

Mark, Saturday, 14 March 2009 17:08 (sixteen years ago)

My friend justifies his existence (former existence) by saying that it's useful to have someone define the line where art is taken too far. I disagree and say we never needed anyone to define that line...

I had a friend in high school who did. He was normally pretty intelligent.
through him i learned of plenty of others... maybe worship is a bit strong but people who looked up to him and thinking he was totally awesome and defending everything he did.

If YouTubes of him grabbing women from the audience and pulling them around by their hair were posted while he was actually on tour, that would be the end of him (which would be a good thing).

this is interesting point, but I don't know if it's true - his reputation preceded him everywhere he went; it's not like his antics were a secret. people would warn promoters "this show isn't going to go well" but he managed to get bookings anyway.

the guy in the macabre t-shirt stage left in the AC picture is cracking me up.

Just one thing I was thinking about as I was getting on the copter (J0hn D.), Sunday, 15 March 2009 13:42 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I hear you -- but I wonder if there is a difference between hearing about it and reading about it and actually seeing it on video and on demand. There is more litigation now in this post-Station fire era, also. Maybe someday there will be a test case.

Mark, Sunday, 15 March 2009 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

Why would he want to perform naked with such a small dick? Maybe all his anger is because he was born with such a small unit. The word mangina comes to mind.

Jim, Sunday, 15 March 2009 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

"Don't Talk to Me" and "NYC Tonite" are classics. Isn't there some sort of biblical injunction that if a fellow has but one classic he should be saved? There should be.

Michael Train, Sunday, 15 March 2009 21:40 (sixteen years ago)

1) it has pretty much been said that GG was of over-average intelligence. Perhaps not emotional intelligence, but intellectual prowess.

2) embarassment is not an option-- fuck embarassment, expose yourself as the naked disgusting animal you are.

again, this is not me saying these things, this is just me playing devil's advocate.

the table is the table, Sunday, 15 March 2009 21:43 (sixteen years ago)

If YouTubes of him grabbing women from the audience and pulling them around by their hair were posted while he was actually on tour, that would be the end of him (which would be a good thing).

i wouldn't be so sure of that -- GG's schtick was pretty well-known in hardcore/punk circles during the late 80s/early 90s. and while he never drew def leppard-type crowds, he wasn't lacking for fans back then (and served the weed out the squeamish [such as myself] well enough).

LOLBJ (Eisbaer), Monday, 16 March 2009 07:33 (sixteen years ago)
