Ichiko Aoba: C/D?

does anyone else like her? She was a guest vocalist on the Sakamoto/Deupree album that came out last year, and she's also collaborated with Cornelius on a couple of tracks. her solo albums remind me of Doji Morita's softer moments (this, for instance) but with nothing but fingerpicked acoustic guitar for accompaniment — gentle, freeform folkie stuff with lots of interesting transitions and tempo changes. my favorite studio album of hers is last year's 0, but her live album 0% might be even better (the performance in the first youtube embed appears on [i]0%[i]).

I like her! in fact, I love her - I've discovered her very recently, so her music's still all of a piece, and I love it all.

it's very pretty and I like it a lot but I've always wanted her to get slower and sparser like on 灰色の日

doesn't seem like it's happening at this point

I love her so much, every song feels old and timeless

one year passes...

new one’s great, comfortably expands her sound but doesn’t sacrifice the core aspects of it in the process

also -

I've always wanted her to get slower and sparser like on 灰色の日

sorta got my wish with the 鮎川のしづく cdr she put out last year. lots of field recordings and excerpts from intimate live performances. gorgeous. personal fave aoba record.

The new one is amazing... she crafts better melodies than Bacharach imo

it really is. it’s... quietly ambitious? something like that!

“sagu palm’s song” def one of her best songs, can’t stop playing it.

This woman deserves the world, she is the real deal

just heard some of this today after seeing the RYM singles list and it is totally my thing. hyped now to hear all her stuff.

Yeah this is really something. I wish 'Sagu Palm's Song' was a duvet, I'd wrap myself in that and blissfully sleep and dream for years hibernation style.

There are only a couple of times a year that my brane quietens down enough to reach something approaching dhayana states, usually around Christmas and usually when I'm doing jigsaw puzzles (wizened Buddha face). This morning I listened to *Windswept Adan* and *O* for the first time and frequently found myself transfixed, muttering what is this - searching for descriptors and points of reference. It's filmic; alchemical. Mood altering. I probably won't listen again for another year.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Tuesday, 31 December 2024 18:49 (six months ago)

two months pass...

new one is lovely. as always.

i've kept being surprised over last year or two about how her London shows seem to sell out so quickly and venues keep getting bigger. seems like the records are reaching a lot of people fairly under the radar? guardian article recently and then today saw she is headlining Royal Albert Hall with £45-£70 tickets.

I am under the impression that "0" (in particular) became a Fishmans-style sleeper hit by dint of Zelda-involvement and RYM enthusiasm. Deservedly! for Fishmans, too.

this album's the first time her work's really clicked with me so i guess i've gotta go revisit her previous albums
