I feel like we all need to set aside our actual preferences and make as many comedy votes for "What's Up?" as we can muster

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Monday, 2 June 2014 14:51 (ten years ago) link

agreed but i'm probably going to vote for "hold on" anyway

Chapterhouse with a charting single in '94!

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 June 2014 14:55 (ten years ago) link

to my knowledge I've never heard any of these besides "What's Up?" and "Cantaloop"

macklin' rosie (crüt), Monday, 2 June 2014 14:55 (ten years ago) link

kind of sad that "Hold On" isn't a cover of the spiritual

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Monday, 2 June 2014 14:56 (ten years ago) link

Easy for me. "The Negotiation Limerick File " is my favorite Beasties track from Hello, Nasty.

What the fuckity fuck is that?!?!?

EZ Snappin, Monday, 2 June 2014 15:03 (ten years ago) link

Rotterdam Termination Source, which I knew would be awesome based off of "Poing!" but I was not prepared for how incredibly awesome it actually is

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Monday, 2 June 2014 15:04 (ten years ago) link

I was thinking more awful than awesome, but to each their own.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 2 June 2014 15:06 (ten years ago) link

"Don't Stay Home" remains the most defensible 311 single -- the first time I heard it I thought it was They Might Be Giants' follow-up to "Snail Shell."

GABBER/HAPPY HARDCORE 4EVA

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Monday, 2 June 2014 15:10 (ten years ago) link

Tempted to throw in the 4 Non Blondes lol vote, but my love for "Cantaloop" is too strong to resist

Holy shit at "Merry Xmess", had no idea that a gabber song made it onto the chart

Frontier Psychiatrist, Monday, 2 June 2014 15:10 (ten years ago) link

why did that chart in July??

macklin' rosie (crüt), Monday, 2 June 2014 15:11 (ten years ago) link

WHY WOULDN'T IT

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Monday, 2 June 2014 15:12 (ten years ago) link

Ok just searched Billboard.biz and "Rotterdam Termination Source" doesn't turn up any results, pretty sure the song which charted on that issue date was actually Sun 60's "Mary Xmess":

booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Monday, 2 June 2014 15:21 (ten years ago) link

Really disappointed now, the idea of an insane Dutch gabber Christmas record hitting the modern rock chart in July is pretty fucking hilarious

Frontier Psychiatrist, Monday, 2 June 2014 15:26 (ten years ago) link

Had to go "Let Down." Might be my favorite Radiohead song. Absolutely love the "one day I am gonna grow wings..."

LimbsKing, Monday, 2 June 2014 15:34 (ten years ago) link

HAHA -- I hope that "Xmess" wins everything, even if it is wrong. The spreadsheet I was working off of must have had the wrong one.

LimbsKing, Monday, 2 June 2014 16:14 (ten years ago) link

i dont even really like monster magnet but i have to vote for space lord

Radiohead – Let Down

the image I have of Sarah McLachlan singing "keep your hand on de plow" isn't very flattering

Violet only got to #29? Team Courtney here.

campreverb, Monday, 2 June 2014 21:13 (ten years ago) link

The (Dammers-less) Specials hit #29 in '98?!? The ska revival had longer legs than we thought.

hole over monster magnet, chem bros, radiohead, beasties

balls, Monday, 2 June 2014 21:42 (ten years ago) link

One of the few good Radiohead singles.

And I didnt know Harvey Danger covered the Beat.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 June 2014 21:53 (ten years ago) link

I feel like I'm voting in poll for best fourth outfielder in the second half of the '80s. Anyway, "Violet" is brilliant.

clemenza, Monday, 2 June 2014 21:57 (ten years ago) link

lol i'm voting for rotterdam termination source even if it didn't chart

the only others i know are "what's up?" and "flip fantasia", prefer the former tbh

dyl, Monday, 2 June 2014 22:05 (ten years ago) link

I feel like the Hole singles were everywhere that winter/spring but most charted pretty low. Also one of the few albums to have 5 singles chart:

"Miss World" - #13
"Doll Parts" - #4
"Asking For It" - #36
"Violet" - #29
"Softer, Softest" - #32

LimbsKing, Monday, 2 June 2014 22:28 (ten years ago) link

feels like the album was everywhere, like 'violet' makes perfect sense as late single cuz it was leadoff track on an album everyone had heard by that point (cf alanis and 'all i really want'). was 'plump' really not a single? kinda weird that the celebrity skin singles did better. kinda amazed also that their 'gold dust woman' didn't do better, i remember it getting a ton of play on afn at the time at least.

balls, Monday, 2 June 2014 22:40 (ten years ago) link

"Doll Parts" and "Violet," not so much the other LTT singles.

"Down by the Water" on the other hand was the deserved winner. I def heard it spring '95 more than "50 Ft Queenie."

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 June 2014 22:43 (ten years ago) link

in the other poll that is

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 June 2014 22:46 (ten years ago) link

Feel like Hole was maybe bigger on MTV than radio, because that Doll Parts video was absolutely inescapable.

intheblanks, Monday, 2 June 2014 22:49 (ten years ago) link

yeah Hole was definitely a band that was propped up big time by MTV relative to radio support. radio didn't get behind them big time until "Celebrity Skin" (and then very little after that).

wasn't in the us at the time but could imagine 'doll parts' being the biggest mtv hit also for obv reasons

balls, Monday, 2 June 2014 22:59 (ten years ago) link

mtv airplay was also partially determined by "album sales" (as opposed to hot 100 positions) or so they claimed.

billstevejim, Monday, 2 June 2014 23:24 (ten years ago) link

the record just had a weird trajectory in general, being released at the, er, interesting time it was released, "Miss World" kinda coming and going without much notice, and then "Doll Parts" and "Violet" becoming the MTV staples. album sold well over a million without ever charting higher than #52.

Ah, the '90s...

Damnit Janet Weiss & The Riot Grrriel (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 01:21 (ten years ago) link

On MuchMusic here, I'm pretty sure "Miss World" was played a lot. That's what turned me into a fan, the Carrie connection (along with how great the song was).

clemenza, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 01:24 (ten years ago) link

I had "Miss World" as my #2 video on a year-end ballot that year: "Two years ago, I listed an outbreak of Graduate references that were turning up in different places. This year I noticed the same thing with Carrie: along with the precise recreation of 'Miss World''s video, there was an Adam Sandler album called They're All Gonna Laugh at You, and a Roseanne rerun--new to me because after stupidly ignoring the show for years, I finally started watching reruns and realized how great it is--where Darlene said she'd only attend her senior prom if she could hide up in the rafters with a bucket of pig's blood."

clemenza, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 01:36 (ten years ago) link

this is so "Sunshine Smile" and it's not even close.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 02:31 (ten years ago) link

I only know "Homeboy" by Adorable, which is ok.

LimbsKing, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 13:14 (ten years ago) link

Oh, it's definitely Adorable. Their entire catalog just makes me smile, no pun intended.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 13:19 (ten years ago) link

lol i'm voting for rotterdam termination source even if it didn't chart

OTM

everyone follow this lead

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 13:36 (ten years ago) link

On MuchMusic here, I'm pretty sure "Miss World" was played a lot.

Yeah, definitely. This and "Violet" were the MM hits iirc. I don't remember seeing "Doll Parts" much, actually.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 16:59 (ten years ago) link

"Miss World" totally hooked me right away and i bought the album when it came out, but i never cottoned to "Doll Parts" and was kinda bummed out when it became the big hit. it's fairly short but still feels a good minute longer than it should be.

It's those stop-and-start verses. You're just waiting to finish each line for Courtney.
