What is the most uplifting piece of music you know that you would consider avant-garde? Preferably something that avoids major-key melodies or harmonies.

HA HA HA now would you like to take a guess.

but i also like the way cecil taylor's hands dance on that piano of his too.

Tough one. I'll toss in the La Monte Young "....High Tension Line Step Down Transformer." Don't know the exact title without the disc in front of me.

Alex Von Schippenbach's Hunting the Snake, 'cos it's spirited and wild. Plus lots of other free improv, for similar reasons.

Just a few off the top of my head--

"Hex Kitchen" by Ikue Mori
"And The Earth Shall Bear Again" by John Cage
"Volumina" by Gyorgy Ligeti
and many things by Eugene Chadbourne

Oddly enough -- given the number of times I've attacked him on ILM -- the best answer I can come up with is Cage's Sonatas and Interludes.

(Unless "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" counts.)

well lately I'd say history of island Ewynd Kang, a record that should be listed amongst the greatest minimalist titles of the last decade. the more I listen to it the more I receive the impression of a "necessary" album. so simple so joyful.

You're so right! That's my favourite side as well. But I have a suspicion that's because there are major key melodies and harmonies buried under there. With Sonatas and Interludes too (another good answer). I love the Second Dream but I don't know if "uplifting" is the right word. Maybe though. What Cecil Taylor do you find uplifting, Julio? A lot of interesting answers generally so far.

Weirdly I knew that last answer was dleone before I saw his name.

sundar subramanian, Saturday, 19 October 2002 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

"you're so right" = Andrew L. dleone sneaked in while I was posting the first time and so I had to read him before posting for real.

sundar subramanian, Saturday, 19 October 2002 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

silent tongues i do find uplifting. but also the end (last 3 minutes) of 'It's in the brewing luminuous' on hatology where he recites his poetry (his mentalist bark!).

his solo rec on FMP too. the sound of his footsteps...he's dancing i think. i like that.

Talk Talk's New Grass ...or is that disqualified in the original question? I only know major from minor intuitively.

"Rods and Cones" by Blue Man Group. Most definitely.

Curtis Stephens, Saturday, 19 October 2002 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, er... if we must avoid traditional harmonies, I'd say "PVC IV" by the same.

Terry Riley's In C. It uplifts me, anyway. The last track on the latest Rafael Toral album's pretty uplifting too, though I'd say it's mostly avant-garde by reputation.
