poll inspired by the final entry in jason heller's (kinda haphazardly assembled) history of '90s punk http://www.avclub.com/article/1999-jimmy-eat-world-closed-decadeand-opened-next-205513; much as i disagree with a lot of the arbitrary narrative shortcuts he takes (necessary to tie discrete and simultaneous scenes together though) this album retrospectively does seem to presage a lot of what happens to emo and pop-punk in the following decade. it's also just a gorgeous and coherent statement from a band that didn't seem entirely capable of either. always thought of it as emo's siamese dream.
