Alice Cooper - The Epics POLL (1971-1975)

Message Bookmarked

Simply put, the original Alice Cooper band (with the assistance of Bob Ezrin) were absolutely on fire creatively between 1971-1973, and their longer tracks have always been a highlight of their classic works for me, and this trait continues at the very least on Cooper's first album without the original band, Welcome To My Nightmare, in 1975.

I've made the cut off point for this 5 and a half minutes, which sadly (or fortunately, depending on your view of the album) omits anything from Muscle Of Love, the final album with the original Alice Cooper band and the only album during this period that I'd say was less than classic.

Dwight Fry or Halo. Both equally deserving.

My instinct says Dead Babies but I'll have to go back and listen to these before voting.

I deeply suspect that 'My Stars' is going to be very underrated in this poll, which is a shame because it's fucking excellent and my favourite thing on the School's Out album!

Having skimmed through these I might go with "Only Women Bleed" though "Dead Babies" "Unfinished Sweet" and "Dwight Fry" are all strong contenders.

Fry or Halo. Both absolutely slay. I think I'll go with fry

Fry's explosion at the end was a tape of a tab of alka seltzer getting dissolved then turned up to max volume. Useless trivia for u.

Would've liked to see "Below Your Means" and "Lay Down And Die, Goodbye" as options too, not that I woulda voted for 'em

xp haha awesome

Dwight Fry, a very easy choice for me. Classic example of rock theatre.

Oh, you should! It's absolutely, completely, totally 100% classic. So many great moments. One that springs to mind right now is the Vincent Price cameo linking 'Devil's Food' and 'The Black Widow'. It's such an incredible shame that Goes To Hell (bar the title track) was nowhere near as good.

I wonder what fans who got on board with Trash and 'Poison' thought of those earlier records. I like to think of that run of post-rehab records (Constrictor, Raise Your Fist And Yell, Trash and Hey Stoopid) as being his "hair metal" phase.

They are one of those bands (yes, bands) where the well known songs don't do the artists work any justice. See also : Blue Oyster Cult.

though "unfinished sweet" off billion dollar babies is better than i rememeber.....

That middle section (the 'James Bond' section) is fucking great, I think. There's even parts of it that are rhythmically interesting (the bass is playing in one time signature, while the guitars are playing in another). And of course the 'tooth pulling' section, I recommend headphones in order to fully appreciate that part.

Christ, I'd forgotten just how well-arranged 'Steven' is!

One of my favorite performances caught on film. It's heightened by the open minutes of prep– taking the snake off the set, setting up and adjusting the straightjacket, messing around with the keyboard riff. Getting all the artifice straight up, only to have it washed away by the playing is just right for this band. They rush the changes a little, adding heat, so totally at the top of their game. They've made it, and they're having so much fun.

It's such an incredible shame that Alice Cooper (the band) had to split up. The Dunaway/Smith rhythm section is quite possibly one of the most underrated rhythm sections in rock.

Sometimes, too, it is quite frustrating trying to explain to people that Alice Cooper was actually the name of the band from the beginning up until '74, and not the solo artist (which it was from '75 onwards).

otm. The band's playing and grooves really showed they could walk the walk, whereas in other, later, contexts maybe the theatrical aspects might seem to take take top priority. Don't know all this material, am now listening to M@tt's playlist, thanks. Trying to thing of other bands that might be reminiscent. For being underrated, will go with Elton John's classic band. For creating more interesting, off-kilter grooves than you might think will go with The Outsiders, the ones from Amsterdam.
