Tracked down a couple of live video performances and dude's voice is much more obviously classical-countertenory in them
Also if you take out the percussion tracks, most of his songs sound like 20th century art songs to me

What's countertenors?I guess I just used operatic in the sense that there is a level of training and skill going on that's not just indie rock

A countertenor is a man who sings primarily/exclusively in the female range, nowadays usually via falsetto. In common modern voice parlance, think of it as a guy singing alto or soprano.
